jays4life19 Old-Timey Member Posted May 4, 2014 Posted May 4, 2014 If you were the GM would you pick up Brandon morrow's 2015 option for 10 million or buy him out for 1 million? A one year deal at 10 million ( 9 when considering the buyout) could represent nice surplus value. Although they will have gotten little/no production over the last 2 years when they need to make the decision. Risk/Reward....what would you do?
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted May 4, 2014 Posted May 4, 2014 Depends on how Sanchez does the rest of the year. If he looks ready, use the $9M to fill a hole for which there is no reasonable internal solution.
eastcoastjaysfan Old-Timey Member Posted May 4, 2014 Posted May 4, 2014 No. 10M for an aging diabetic with declining performance. Absolutely, 100% no. Imagine where this team would be right now if Romero and Morrow pitched to their 2011 levels. Hard to tell which collapse is worse. Probably Morrow's because his ceiling was always thought to be higher.
BigBounceyBlueBalls Old-Timey Member Posted May 4, 2014 Posted May 4, 2014 Can AA not also reopen contact talks on a lengthened more team friendly deal? Tell him straight up we are gonna release you based on your performance unless you take less. Sign him to a new 2-3 deal at 3-4 mill per season plus incentives say half a mill per win!
jaysfan2014 Old-Timey Member Posted May 4, 2014 Posted May 4, 2014 No way. Too many injuries, and we have options coming in the minors.

There's no chance he would take a 2-3 year deal at 3-4 million per season. He would simply choose to be a FA and sign a one year pillow contract ( ie. Josh Johnson) to try and rebuild his value.
jays4life19 Old-Timey Member Posted May 4, 2014 Author Posted May 4, 2014 I'm probably in the minority but i would pick up the option and maybe take an insurance policy on it.

Performance related bonuses are not permitted by MLB. And when FA mediocre RP are getting 6-10 million per year, offering Morrow who could easily be a mediocre RP 3-4 million would be extremely stupid on his part to accept.
BigBounceyBlueBalls Old-Timey Member Posted May 4, 2014 Posted May 4, 2014 What are not gold glove, all star appearances playoff or World bonuses not considered performance bonuses? There's a law against it, did not know that, thanks! Well that's stupid but I believe there should be reverse arbitration too! You sucked ass beyond normal give me my money back! Lol
BigBounceyBlueBalls Old-Timey Member Posted May 4, 2014 Posted May 4, 2014 Then I guess I would have to say let him walk and put that 10 mill to use somewhere else! Unless you think Rogers just claws it back into the coffers and reduces the payroll.
JaysAllMighty Old-Timey Member Posted May 4, 2014 Posted May 4, 2014 No IF the money is used on other players, but we all know it's all downhill from now on, Rogers will cut back on spending even more now that we are so awful.
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted May 4, 2014 Posted May 4, 2014 He is the best pitcher on the Blue Jays...so yes!
ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted May 4, 2014 Posted May 4, 2014 I say yes. Even if they decide to blow it up in the off season, it's worth trying to trade him for a prospect mid-2015.
SAAviour Verified Member Posted May 4, 2014 Posted May 4, 2014 I'm no longer a fan of the guy and to my eyes he's clearly lost something on his fastball and crispness to his slider. However for 1 year at 10 mil I guess I keep him. I'm quite confident it would end up being a sunk cost though, but it's only 1 year.

Lol Yes, those types of incentives are allowed, as are incentives based on innings pitched, games started... Etc, just not actual performance stats like strikeouts, ERA, and stuff like that.

kgm1 Verified Member Posted May 4, 2014 Posted May 4, 2014 Yup. Well since he probably needs season ending surgery then i would say NO . I would try to resign him at a cheaper rate but I suspect he now ends up a relief pitcher. Sad but his disease just doesn't allow him to pitch to his potential

Which we all know he might never see or make! Even better then when we move him to the pen or trade him. Lol
TDotttt2005 Verified Member Posted May 4, 2014 Posted May 4, 2014 Lets pick up the options on Morrow and Happ, and have 25mil of 2015 salary go to Romero, Morrow, and Happ. Winning plan?
fatcowxlive Old-Timey Member Posted May 4, 2014 Posted May 4, 2014 Yes because these days $9MM (It takes $1M to not pick up his option) is nothing, especially for a pitcher. Look at the open market too, Scott Kasmir who pitched healthy for the first time in at least 3 years gets $11MM per year for 2 years from Oakland. Josh Johnson - who like Morrow has pitched well before his injuries kicked in - got paid by San Diego $8MM for a year. Morrow would be worth it when the market prices take another hike in 2015

Add Lind too at 7mil that will tie our hands a Lil more were going all in with only 2 years left to win! Lol

You have to pay him a base salary and then add incentives based on # of starts or IP. For example... 5 million base salary with bonuses of 1 million for hitting 150 IP, 175 and 200... Or 1 million bonus for hitting 20, 25 and 30 starts. Bonuses on a per start basis wouldn't be allowed.
