HERPDERP Old-Timey Member Posted April 4, 2014 Posted April 4, 2014 http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/blue-jays-players-were-willing-to-push-back-pay-to-land-santana-040314 Interesting Two things I take from this: 1.) Jays were willing to do such a thing to make their team better - no selfishness 2.) The fact that management had to go to this length shows payroll is very restricted
Spoonovic Verified Member Posted April 4, 2014 Posted April 4, 2014 So Rogers didnt give AA the green light to sign big free agents this year. What is the new Rogers' CEO's stand on the Jays?
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted April 4, 2014 Posted April 4, 2014 Wow What does it do to morale when you then fail to sign him? I mean, they seem happy enough right now, but there may have been some resentment. Edit: Meh, sounds like it was never all that serious
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted April 4, 2014 Posted April 4, 2014 the Jays' Dominican players had staged a fervent recruiting effort for Santana, who is from La Romana, Dominican Republic. At one point, the players texted a photo to Santana's cell phone, according to a source. The photo was of the players holding a sign that said, "Come to Toronto."
DuckDuckGose Verified Member Posted April 4, 2014 Posted April 4, 2014 Morons. This is business Well not really Ang. IMO what likely happened was AA was led to believe payroll would go up which is why he went all in last season. Then Rogers made the deal with the NHL and the money was gone.

I cant believe i never thought of that rogers blew most of the money on the NHL deal wow
GNick Verified Member Posted April 4, 2014 Posted April 4, 2014 Anthopoulos has handed out a lot of bad contracts ie. Morrow or Romero. Imagine Rogers has reigned him in. Last fall he said definite upgrade to pitching staff but it never materialized. Despite several good starters on the open market, even staying unsigned almost up to spring training.
mitchf Verified Member Posted April 4, 2014 Posted April 4, 2014 And many of you were naive enough to think that Alex was sitting on his hands. This team had zero flexibility and it was clear from the get go. I'm not defending Alex, but it is quite sad that he wasn't able to add even a couple of players.

I don't think they were bad contracts at all at the time. I think Morrow could still make good.
Jays Verified Member Posted April 4, 2014 Posted April 4, 2014 How did he not, at the very least, trade Happ, Janssen and Santos for payroll flexibility?
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted April 4, 2014 Posted April 4, 2014 I don't think they were bad contracts at all at the time. I think Morrow could still make good. Every single GM in baseball would have happily given Romero that contract, at that time. The Happ extension is the only one that bothers me
AdamGreenwood Old-Timey Member Posted April 4, 2014 Posted April 4, 2014 This is what happens when you agree to take on $40 million in salary for an oft injured shortstop and a mediocre pitcher.
flafson Verified Member Posted April 4, 2014 Posted April 4, 2014 Amazing that AA doesn't have any money. The team doesn't lose much money if at all, doesn't seem like they need to cover much. Specially if you consider that Rogers is worth 20 billion.
o2cui2i Community Moderator Posted April 4, 2014 Posted April 4, 2014 And many of you were naive enough to think that Alex was sitting on his hands. is that the same as thinking he had his thumb up his ass? then yes, this ^^^^^^^^
admin Site Manager Posted April 4, 2014 Posted April 4, 2014 So sad, I don't care for Santana, but a consistent pitcher like him would have went a long way this year. Interesting to see how Hech does this year. Starting the season off well.

o2cui2i Community Moderator Posted April 4, 2014 Posted April 4, 2014 the players get it.... to bad management is clueless and MIA. couldn't beeston just do us all favor and step in front of the Yankees bus today?
JFD Old-Timey Member Posted April 4, 2014 Posted April 4, 2014 The team is half built and rogers is suddenly poor. feels bad man.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted April 4, 2014 Posted April 4, 2014 Beeston "we run it as a business" Without saying it, despite being asked 5 times, they are at their current spending limit, clearly
FireAlexAnthopoulos Verified Member Posted April 4, 2014 Posted April 4, 2014 AA and Beeston love stories and reactions like this. It puts all the heat on Rogers and takes the focus away from the Two Stooges' incompetence, while giving them an excuse to point to. "See, we weren't incompetent, we just had no money!"

After everything that's come out today, you're still sticking with this script... At least consider the alternatives.

wilko Old-Timey Member Posted April 4, 2014 Posted April 4, 2014 The fact that this was even talked about (or considered) is foolish. Either you have the payroll to land additional players, or you don't. Stop bullshitting everyone.
o2cui2i Community Moderator Posted April 4, 2014 Posted April 4, 2014 Either you have the payroll to land additional players, or you don't. Stop bullshitting everyone. Beeston is all smoke and mirrors. he might be able to pull a rabbit out of his ass, but he cant find a winning team with 140 Million on the table. Imagine what kind of team the Rays or A's could put together for 140 million.
