Atothe Old-Timey Member Posted April 2, 2014 Posted April 2, 2014 I forgot what it was like to have a Cather just do his job and not complain. He did a good job catching.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted April 2, 2014 Posted April 2, 2014 Yes he did Calm and in control behind the plate Good hands Professional Has made some nice plays He'll screw up some but I like what I see so far. Not an all star but so far happy with him.

BallsDeep Verified Member Posted April 2, 2014 Posted April 2, 2014 Looks great behind the plate. Much better catcher than JPA.
NorthOf49 Old-Timey Member Posted April 2, 2014 Posted April 2, 2014 What really stood out to me yesterday was when Navarro apologized to the umpire and smiled instead of grumbled after tossing his bat on that not-quite-ball-four. This guy knows his role and is happy to fulfill it to the best of his abilities.
jaysfan2014 Old-Timey Member Posted April 2, 2014 Posted April 2, 2014 And he doesn't act like JP Arencibia did for the years we had JPA. BTW, JPA didn't play vs. Texas, as Chirinos got the start yesterday.
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted April 2, 2014 Posted April 2, 2014 Navarro and Goins have his own thread. Dickey and his +4.5 runs per 9 inning have their personal catcher!! #ThisTeamSuckLoViste
z3r0s Old-Timey Member Posted April 2, 2014 Posted April 2, 2014 I liked Navarro's game... I just don't for the life of me understand where Gibby is batting him.
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted April 2, 2014 Posted April 2, 2014 Best thing about him is HE DOESN'T STRIKE OUT. I can't remember the last time I saw him strike out. He always puts the ball in play.
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted April 2, 2014 Posted April 2, 2014 There's something delightfully old school about a guy who doesn't look like an athlete, much less a pretty boy like Arrencibia but simply looks like a catcher. A guy that no one, including himself, could imagine doing anything else on the field of play (on any field of play) than that job.

He said that looks like a catcher from my days. No ball gets behind them big boys lol.
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted April 2, 2014 Posted April 2, 2014 You just had to bring his looks into this! Part of the fun of the early season is making knee jerk judgements on a guy based on next to nothing. That Navarro, he just looks like a catcher! I love it. Maybe I will be calling for his job in a month but for now I'll just let myself be easily impressed. He looks like a catcher AND he's a catcher. It's a god damn revolution. A watershed moment.
bendera3 Verified Member Posted April 2, 2014 Posted April 2, 2014 For me it's nice to know that catcher is no longer an offensive black hole like it was last year. The homer or nothing approach is just dreadful.
no soup for yu Verified Member Posted April 2, 2014 Posted April 2, 2014 i like him so far, but i question his durability. hopefully now that kratz is here (hopefully to stay) gibbons will give him a few days off here and there to let his big fat nonathletic body time to recoup

The homer or nothing approach is just dreadful. Not only that, but JPA had terrible D. At least with Navarro you know you're getting decent D and some upside of getting on base.

Sammy225 Old-Timey Member Posted April 2, 2014 Posted April 2, 2014 Nothing wrong with playing Kratz more than 1 in 5 either I would not be surprised to see Kratz catching and Navarro DHing tonight
JohnnyLonghorn Verified Member Posted April 2, 2014 Posted April 2, 2014 Interesting fact: Dioner Navarro reached base only 15 less times than JP Arencebia did last year, with 231 less plate appearances. Navarro isn't a world beater by any stetch, but the upgrades he provides over what we previously had at the catcher position really can't be understated.

G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted April 2, 2014 Posted April 2, 2014 Know what else? He hit 13 HR last year too. Someone do the math if HR/PA please
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted April 2, 2014 Posted April 2, 2014 You give him days against lefties (like today) where he DH's and Kratz catches against the lefty. Man, time to change your avatar. I miss you
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted April 2, 2014 Posted April 2, 2014 (edited) 2013 plate appearances per home run: JP Arencibia 23.7 Dioner Navarro 20.5 Erik Kratz 24.2 Edited April 2, 2014 by G-Snarls
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted April 2, 2014 Posted April 2, 2014 (edited) So, these catchers might not even be a downgrade in power JP was ostensibly a good pitch framer, actually better than Navarro IIRC. But overall I'll take what we have now (Navarro and Kratz) over JP any day. Pls just option Thole when Janssen is activated Edited April 2, 2014 by G-Snarls
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted April 2, 2014 Posted April 2, 2014 If only he could run the bases passably lol. I was impressed when he beat out a double play in Montreal. He really hustled down the line.
Convo Verified Member Posted April 2, 2014 Posted April 2, 2014 In the two games so far, the Rays catchers each have 0.3 runs from framing, while Navarro is at -0.1 and Thole at 0.0. I can't imagine this stat means anything after 2 games... am I wrong?
Convo Verified Member Posted April 2, 2014 Posted April 2, 2014 Yeah doesn't mean much, but means more than anything else after 2 games. Each catcher has had more than 60 chances. Call me a conspiracy theorist but I usually feel like Jays don't get the calls that other teams do so I would be curious to compare us vs. the rest of the league.
Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted April 2, 2014 Posted April 2, 2014 You give him days against lefties (like today) where he DH's and Kratz catches against the lefty. By far the thing that jumped out at me most is that he really didn't look anywhere near a below average framer. I know he's supposedly negative in that department but he made some really nice frames last night. Very quiet and minimal glove movement.
