His bat is probably going to be s***, but, if Goins tightens his approach at the plate and fouls balls off running the pitch count high + has a good eye (starts to draw walks) he'll naturally improve as a hitter. His glove is really good right now and would be OK at 2B. With that being said I still welcome Drew to play SS until Reyes is 100% healthy, then we swing him around and have Goins as a pinch runner (I'm guessing he can run decently?) and an infield glove.

Those are some pretty big "IFs"

I appreciate you input fatcow. Thanks for actually reflecting on the topic and giving some good ideas about the state of the team. I like it.

They are projected to be an 82 win team.

For them to win everything has to go right. Reyes to the dl and Dickey slow start. Everything isn't going right.

Nobody here thinks they can survive a minor bump. Everything has to go right. Izturus and Goins for April?? Dickey slow start??

All of a sudden it's May 15th, 16-29... 11 games back. Over. But it was actually over when Reyes strained the hamstring and Dickey couldn't find the knuckball in late-late march.

Maybe so... But I think it's not over just yet. This team will surprise all of you.

No nothing behind it. I'm just not used to people actually staying on topic and engaging in legitimate discourse in my threads, for whatever reason.

Ahh - I remember last year -

"It's only the first game"

"It's only the first series"

"it's only the first 10 games"

"It's only the first 20 games"

"It's only the first 1/4 of the season - the championship Blue Jays were below .500 at the all-star break too"

The Panic button should have been pressed in December when no upgrades to the team were made.

And they're not playing chump teams to start the season - it is very possible they will start the season no better than 4-8 over the first 4 series.

Reyes going down gives AA and Beeston an excuse for losing. AA says he's considering extending Reyes, Bautista and Edwin. (oh no).

To be fair we are predicted to finish dead last - so at least with the 9-2 drubbing of our supposed ace - we can try and kill any hopes early of a surprise.

My prediction 7-13 in the first 20. (7 games out of first).

I saw earlier today it was the 4th inning of the first game of the season and there was already 40 pages of posts on the game including a whole lot of complaining. I'm not sure if this is a product of the entitlement generation or the fact many young people have almost no attention span anymore. The title of this thread is bang on, people need to calm down and stop complaining about the baseball team. Life goes on whether the team wins or not, and absolutely nothing from spring training or one game can be useful to forecast how a team will do in any season.

I wonder if Texas has a forum with dozens of posters complaining about how bad their pitching was today ? Or maybe, just maybe, it's just one game in a 162 game season.

Texas has a ton of injuries so their forum is probably complaining about that. And in a couple weeks they will be complaining about JP.

This is why people don't like you. Entitlement generation? Way to paint people with a generic negative brush. I know several perfectly capable hard-working people just a couple years younger than me in their late 20's who can't find a decent job and have no chance of home ownership anytime soon. You might say, "yeah so, they have to earn it, or work their way up" or something along those lines. Which is fair, I wouldn't disagree with that.

But to paint with the same generic negative brush, the entitlement generation has already come and gone. They're the Baby Boomers....you know...the people who require home ownership, multiple car ownership, cottage ownership, unlimited free health care and who racked up so much debt that they can't leave their high paying middle-management jobs (union blue collar work included - every time there's some moron yapping about a strike it's usually centered around 50+ year old high school educated people who expect "job security" for their $80K+ driving forklifts or taking TTC tickets or whatever) and let the younger generation take over. Oh and in this mess have managed to continue the f***ing up of our environment, learned by their parents.

Entitlement generation...jeez....

We needed our players to stay incredibly healthy. We are really not okay without Reyes. Not even a little bit. We basically need to just pray on completely amazing, unrealistic seasons from Hutchison and McGowan at this point.

Yes it is only the first game and I get that we MAY be overreacting to one game. But the difference between us and Texas is that Texas has a history of winning in the recent past. When a winner loses - "they'll easily bounce back" - when a loser loses it's somewhat expected. When a team advertised to win that traded most of its upper tier prospects and highly touted finishes dead last and then starts the following year with an utter trouncing by a team in the division - it causes the eyes to roll and say "here we go again."

I've been a fan since the 80s born in the 70s. My dad was there to see Ault's two homer game (the first game the Jays ever played and won 9-5 in the snow). I get the frustration. The team came into existence in 1977 and made the playoffs in just 8 years (1985). And won two World Series titles 7 years later. In a 15 year span This club overall was pretty excellent - playoff runs several times - missing out but very close a few times and 2 WS titles.

20 years since and there may have been 2 seasons in the entire time where we even REMOTELY competed for anything. I can't remember playing meaningful games in September - although maybe I am forgetting - Gibbons gave us a good season in there but not in it.

So I don't think you can blame attention spans - 20 years is a LOOOONG time to not even really compete. Now granted - we had some nice records - we had seasons where if we played in other divisions we would have made noise - but unfortunately being in the hunt in the AL East has not come about. Even Baltimore is doing more with less.

I was for a lot of the moves AA made because based on what he did before the moves he was our silent ninja but now he has turned into Chris Farley "Beverly Hills Ninja" instead.

And the thing is the 80s jays teams looked to be competitive - they brought up guys from the minors who actually did stuff.

If I could see some light at the end of the tunnel - but what have got? ~$135 million payroll

Dickey - 38 year old who can be great when the pitch is working - a gas can when it's not.

MB - 35 soft toss lefty -who is quite solid but $20million a season - he's untradeable or virtually so without eating a big part of the contract.

Morrow - if he gets to 100ip that'd be nice but you know at some point something's going to break - anyone now wonder why Seattle gave him up for peanuts. They knew - they put him in the pen because they knew.

Hutchison - ray of light - maybe the only one in the starting rotation

McGowan - see Morrow.

Stroman? There are no stud shrimpy pitchers in the history of the game - and when someone points to one - he's typically average and still taller. Sanchez put up some good numbers - is he a light? I did not get a chance to see him but the numbers looked nice - Redmond was solid.

But what do we have coming? Anyone? Do we have a single pitcher in the entire system who is projected to be a stud ace? One? Anyone? Please. Do we have a single bat at a premium position coming (SS, CF, C)? Do we have a single guy who looks like he will be a 30 homer, .850OPS (top 15% in the game kind of guy)?

The old Jays would scoop up castoffs like Devon White and Tom Henke and develop Dave Steibs and Jimmy Keys and make trades to land Joe Carter and Roberto Alomar. Uggh - we develop Goins and JPA and trade for Gose and Drabek.

Don't get me wrong. I'm not saying it's over. But people aren't reacting because it was a loss.

Alternative Universe. Yesterdays game goes as follows.

Rays 4, Jays 3. Dickey 8 innings, 4 runs, 3 earned, 2 walks, 9 ks, a bit of bad luck.

Reyes 3/4, triple, stolen base, hamstring holds up nicely.

In that case we all say "come back and get them tomorrow". I'm excited and so is everyone else.

Well i get that it's one game....Reyes getting hurt on the first AB was such a Buzz kill. We escape Spring Training with one of the more healthy teams in baseball and then BOOM Reyes on the 15 day DL after the first AB.

Its really not one game though. Its really game 163 of last year. Why? Because its essentially the same roster. We had holes, they were not filled.

What do I remember from last year...Reyes getting injured. Check. Dickey being mediocre to bad. Check. Dickey taking the blame, and the talking heads discussing his subpar KBall velocity and saying in his cy young year he was in the low 80's...blah blah. Thats one game. But it really is all 162 games of last year.

When the front office strategy for the offseason is to do nothing, and pray for good health...then game one, your starting star shortstop goes down, with Jonathan Diaz replacing him...what does that say about your offseason strategy??

We're not panicking because of one game. We're panicking because that one game is the exact same BS as all 162 games last year.

Yep

The team's hopes of contention rests very much on the health of Jose Reyes, Brett Lawrie and Brandon Morrow. To go from "wow we're healthy" to losing Reyes on the FIRST PLATE APPEARANCE of the season just royally sucks.
