Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted March 24, 2014 Posted March 24, 2014 Morrow is struggling with command clearly, but his stuff actually looks pretty good. You have to wonder if the added bulk in the offseason might take him a little while to adjust to.
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted March 24, 2014 Posted March 24, 2014 At least our outfielders aren't airmailing the backstop or trying to pick someone off in the dugout. Those last two throws were beautiful.
o2cui2i Community Moderator Posted March 24, 2014 Posted March 24, 2014 If Morrow doesn't pitch decently for us this season, we're definitely f***ed. he's not pitching better than a sketchy number 5 so far. Dickey Buehrle Hutch ? ? any of those 3 gets hurt and the jays may as well start a rebuild.
ColdPint Verified Member Posted March 24, 2014 Posted March 24, 2014 We should try to steal the best director of player development from another team with an absurd overpay. The Jays inability to develop anything resembling homegrown talent since Lind speaks volumes to changes that need to be made in philosophy - whether it be drafting the wrong types of players or the development of those players once they enter the system it's pretty obvious there's a pretty large disconnect. You would think we would have at least "lucked out" on a prospect or two over the years. When AA started his tenure by restaffing the scouting and player development departments that JPR tore down I thought it was the start of the change we needed. Shouldn't we be seeing the dividends by now?
o2cui2i Community Moderator Posted March 24, 2014 Posted March 24, 2014 Things look so much better with Hutch in the mix. If he can go 130 innings of sub-4 ERA ball this year it would be huge. right now, I'd slot Hutch in far ahead of morrow. Redmond is ahead of Morrow as well.... Jesus that's depressing.
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted March 24, 2014 Posted March 24, 2014 Has it really been that bad? Synder, Sanchez, and Stroman seem to be successes. f***, Syndergaard could be a very good starter in the majors as soon as June, and he was brought along from highschool to AA by the org. I think the problem, if there is one, is in relying on high school arms (huge attrition rates) and athletic bats that can't hit in the draft. I don't care about the highschool arms, but I like the Cards approach of selecting good hitters and worrying about where to play them later much more than selecting great athletes who can't hit and hoping to teach that to them. Get good bats early and draft great athletes later.
Jaysin2014 Verified Member Posted March 24, 2014 Posted March 24, 2014 Hand-eye coordination is a thing. So is pitch recognition. Not every skill in baseball relies on how strong you are or how fast you can run and swing a bat. Making contact with a baseball is a skill. Obviously but one doesn't make it to AAA without some hand eye coordination and pitch recognition.

Exactly I got no issue about the pitchers they select because they have some good ones come through the system just don't trade them off so early. Its the way they select fielders. Snider was the last decent one come through our organization and that seems so long ago now. Time for a different approach there.

Good point on Synder......I've just tried my hardest to block out the fact that he could have been part of a very promising young Jays rotation. That said, I'm still not sold on either Sanchez or Stroman, until they prove themselves up here they're still unrealized potential. On the position player side of things the Jays have produced next to nothing resembling star talent since when? Who would you consider to be the last homegrown star?
Sammy225 Old-Timey Member Posted March 24, 2014 Posted March 24, 2014 Only good thing you can take from this start is that he is getting a lot of ground balls. He just has to STOP WALKING PEOPLE. Seems to be a theme from this ST from our starters except Hutch

Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted March 24, 2014 Posted March 24, 2014 Interesting that Morrow said he has only seen the new protective headgear in pictures online. You'd think that samples would have been provided to teams so that all players could try them on and get a close look at them. I'd say that's a huge failure by MLB and the manufacturer.
o2cui2i Community Moderator Posted March 24, 2014 Posted March 24, 2014 I think it would be better to cut ties with Izturis and have Diaz on the team.

G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted March 24, 2014 Posted March 24, 2014 Wilner says Janssen topped out at 86 mph Hopefully he was holding back a bit??
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted March 24, 2014 Posted March 24, 2014 Wilner says Janssen topped out at 86 mph Hopefully he was holding back a bit?? I'd expect it'll be low for a few weeks, but fortunately he doesn't rely on velocity to be effective. I really think we'd be best off to DL him for 2 weeks though and give him a chance to get up to speed properly.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted March 24, 2014 Posted March 24, 2014 It's not the pitchers drafted that's the problem, it is the hitters. The jays haven't developed a hitting prospect in many years, and drafting athletes who can't hit certainly won't help that problem.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted March 24, 2014 Posted March 24, 2014 Happ starting tomorrow followed by Rogers Happ will be sweating for more than one reason
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted March 24, 2014 Posted March 24, 2014 Holy f***..........you just posted this being serious? Love the Kenny Lofton floor comp as much as the Ichiro ceiling
