Dylan Old-Timey Member Posted March 24, 2014 Posted March 24, 2014 Just comes down to catchers and 4th spot then? With Kawasaki and getz going down, does that mean they really don't expect reyes to be out for opening day?
Dylan Old-Timey Member Posted March 24, 2014 Posted March 24, 2014 Bench: Kratz/Thole, Sierra, Izturis
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted March 24, 2014 Author Posted March 24, 2014 Gose should be on this team. Why? He can't hit and need everyday AB; He could be "something useful" someday.

Sent down today: Getz, Nickeas, Gose, Tolleson. Who will play short stop then if not Kawasaki?? 1. Reyes hamstring tightness. 2. Reyes MRI. 3. Reyes dl for opening day (just precationary). 4. AA "it's not healing as fast as we thought it would and we'd like it to. But it's not a big deal. he will be back soon and Kawasaki did a great job last year filling in."
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted March 24, 2014 Posted March 24, 2014 Gose should be on this team. Disagree. He'd be little more than a pinch runner only. Buffalo isn't that far away, he has options. He can be called up promptly if Rasmus or Cabrera get hurt.
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted March 24, 2014 Posted March 24, 2014 I don't think he needs everyday anything. He runs well, defends all three OF spots well, and can probably slap the ball around well enough to provide positive overall value, especially if used mostly against RHP. He brings a much-needed skill set to the team. I don't really buy into him developing more by playing every day in AAA. If Wilson had that role and Gose was in AAA would that make everyone happy?
CHRIS Verified Member Posted March 24, 2014 Posted March 24, 2014 I don't really buy into him developing more by playing every day in AAA. To be honest, I think if they want to get anything out of Gose, he should be in the majors. I feel like he's going to go down and sulk and spin his wheels and waste another season. At least in the majors he provides legitimate contributions defensively and via pinch running. Hopefully, the light goes on with the bat. That's not to defend him being a sourpuss, but just seemingly the reality of the situation. If the team is trying to take "the best team" north, I'd probably have Gose on it.

There's also the strange battle between Sierra and the so far absent Tuiasasopo (I'm rooting for Michael Taylor from the A's in that battle but it's not going to happen.).
CHRIS Verified Member Posted March 24, 2014 Posted March 24, 2014 He can be called up promptly if Rasmus or Cabrera get hurt. True, but it would be nice to have him around daily as a defensive replacement as well. It's great that Cabrera looks better this spring, but I'd still feel better having Gose on this bench.

Not having him play everyday isn't ideal but neither is him going through the motions in AAA. It's hard to see any scenario where he plays himself into the starting job for 2015 (which is pretty bleak considering the likeliness that Rasmus will walk).
CHRIS Verified Member Posted March 24, 2014 Posted March 24, 2014 It's such a lose/lose with Gose. The only way I see it happening for Gose is to have a low pressure job sharing-ish role with Cabrera where he comes in late defensively and gets some ABs through that, and from spelling Rasmus on the odd days. I feel like he's better served by realizing some small personal wins via defensive contributions, scoring some winning runs via PR and the like, and gaining some confidence until something clicks with the bat. Plus it wouldn't be the biggest shock in the world if Bautista had a couple of nagging ailments that might give Gose some additional ABs.

I suspect that's the plan though, that Rasmus will walk and Gose will take over CF. If that's what is going to happen, then it makes sense to have Gose get full playing time in AAA.
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted March 24, 2014 Posted March 24, 2014 I hope that that's more of a long shot pie in the sky hope than an actual plan. There may be some value in Gose as a 4th OF, but I'd be pretty surprised if he's starter-caliber in a year. Maybe, but outside of Rasmus there's pretty much nothing on the FA list at center next year, and if we look to trade it's going to cost us pitching. I just hope we don't try to carry Gose AND Goins as starters in the same year.
flafson Verified Member Posted March 24, 2014 Posted March 24, 2014 My guess is, they will start the season with 3 on the bench, in the second d game of the season they will dfa Jeffress and recall Kawasaki.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted March 24, 2014 Posted March 24, 2014 Message to Gose is.... go down to AAA and play your way onto the team If his head is in the right place, should be up in no time at all
fatcowxlive Old-Timey Member Posted March 24, 2014 Posted March 24, 2014 Goins short, Izturis 2B to start the season. what. So it will be a Thole/Kratz + Sierra bench only?
kgm1 Verified Member Posted March 24, 2014 Posted March 24, 2014 what. So it will be a Thole/Kratz + Sierra bench only? Unless you put Reyes on the DL that is what you have ,but since they can backdate the DL stint even if he plays minor league games I suspect Kawasaki will be up .

Obviously being a bench player is not the ideal development path for any young player, but I don't have much confidence in his mental makeup to go down to AAA and do the work necessary to take the next step. Since we are currently in our "window", I think its important to have a bench that can contribute, and I think Gose possesses multiple skills that allow him to do so; skills that no one else on the 40 possess.

Gose needs to be in AAA to work on his defense and his offense. He made a ridiculous amount of mental errors defensively last year and his arm was not accurate at all. He should be a good defensive player, but he was anything but that last year in his time in the majors.

fireballW Verified Member Posted March 25, 2014 Posted March 25, 2014 Drew is as injury prone as all the other guys on our roster. He does nothing special with the bat and I really don't think he's worth 14 million more than even Goins.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted March 25, 2014 Posted March 25, 2014 Should bring back Mark DeRosa and use Lawrie in a Zobrist role No way in hell should Goins and Izturis be manning the middle of the infield
