So far he's clearly winning the race to not get DFA'd since McGowan, Redmond and Jeffres have all been pretty bad. Right now McGowan is probably the one I'd most like to see get the axe because I'm tired of holding a roster spot for a human interset story. It's just so unprofessional.

I hate Sierra for his lack of defensive value and wanted him DFA'd pretty bad before spring training but since no external option was brought in he might be the best option for right-handed DH. Pillar is more complete player bu he isn't exactly setting the world on fire. Sierra, from what I understand, had a great winter ball season. I'm skeptical of his new found successe especially since he's been bad for so long and I don't know that he's doing anything different but there's not much to lose by letting him play until he fails at this point. Pillar will still be available when he does.

McGowan has looked bad? I guess if you look at a 4 inning ERA. He sure isn't giving up hits and he is outperforming Morrow to date.

It's hard to see over the radio, they obviously made some outs when he was on the field because they were able to finish the game...

where's Grant when you need him. He watched games over the radio all the time.

You're right. Only Jeffres has been truly horrible of that group. McGowan's actually been pretty sharp.

More worrisome is who will back up CF? It is pretty hard to play your way onto or off a team as a position player in ST unless there is a true bubble battle but Gose and Pillar are each managing to play their way to Buffalo. It's not like Kenny Williams is making the club.

That would leave Sierra as the 4th outfielder, EE as an emergency outfielder and Bautista as the emergency CF. This can't happen.

Melky will be the backup CF, Sierra 4th OF.

You can't make this stuff up.

Thought of that but really, can he play there at this point?

Posted
Metrics have him well below-average in CF in his career, and he's now two years and back surgery removed from the last time he spent an inning there. He shouldn't be seeing time in CF this year.

He clearly won't fill an everyday role, having Melky in CF for a few innings here and there isn't going to hurt this team. The way you overreact to just about every single decision the Jays make is laughable.

He's going to get starts when Colby gets days off. He most obviously will hurt this team. I don't know how you could argue otherwise frankly.

AA and Gibby say they undervalued defense last year and say they learned from that mistake

Now they are taking one of the worst defenders we've ever seen for the 4th OF job and have a backup CF who almost certainly is inadequate.

How do a major league GM and manager under-value defense? Seems like we have a bunch of kids running our team.

Bar none the most aggravating poster on this board. He is so damn polite and cheery you're not expecting anything. Then he hammers you with his scouting reports and love of Cito Gaston. Grant loves a) his own scouting reports, B) Cito and Murph and Beeston. Grant hates, logic, thinking, math and science (like a lot science hating people he claims he is an esteemed scientist).

Must be tough for him around here lately... His original theory was that Cito and Murph were going to teach everybody to hit and be great and start a cycle like 92 and 93.

And yet the guy is completely unsentimental and mostly unbiased as a fantasy player (if not downright ruthless in his gamemanship). I think that's where he shows his true colours.

It could be worse ... it could be Jack Z running the team. They seem to think poor defenders are a market inefficiency in Seattle these days.

And the oft-maligned Jack Z may have put together a team that is better than the Jays, at about $50M less per year. Maybe dancing bears are the new market inefficiency.

I wish we could post inline videos here just for this opportunity to show Homer Simpson thinking about the ballet.

Sierra's ST slash line down to 219/306/344. I wonder if this, combined with his league-average performance as a 24-year old in AAA last year, makes management think twice about giving him a job?

I say no. The whole logic for giving him a job was basically "he's what's around" and that logic still holds and as much validity today as it did during the off-season.

And unfortunately, thanks to Gose and Pillar's inability to touch bat to ball, he's also "the best of what's around". Sucks.

I wonder what's up with Pillar? Nobody ever thought he was more than a platoon OF, backup type but he's coming up really small in his opportunities to be even that. Is it just a SSS anomaly or is something wrong?

I know you're asking everybody but I have no idea. Haven't seen any of his at bats I don't think.

He has no options. He hit in September. He has a cannon arm. And Gose and Pillar are having an awful time this Spring. I'd be tempted to keep Kenny on the team for a week or two to let Pillar and Gose get regular at bats in Buffalo and to send the message that players get rewarded for coming to camp ready to play. I couldn't care less about Wilson losing an option. He's not a future starter.

I like Wilson more than Gose as a bench option. Gose is theoretically the starting CF for 2015. Even if I'm not terribly optimistic that he can improve offensively, I still prefer him to get starts than rot on the bench and possibly regress even further. In a limited role, it seems like Wilson can provide some of the defense and speed that Gose would provide.

Would be the thrill of a lifetime for the kid and his glove and legs are MLB ready. Give him two weeks on the bench if he continues to play well and if Gose/Pillar are still struggling. Not the end of the world.

No, not the end of the world. I mean he's got to be on the 40 man roster for a reason right? If you can't use him and a speed and defense role, he shouldn't even be there.
