That's assuming of course that Hech's defense is legit. The stats were not kind to him last year so it's not crazy to think that even at ss, Goins would be better. In any case, unless he's getting Hech and Huch confused, I really don't know where the op is coming from. Consensus semms to be that Hech was an expensive bust.

This was a large product of his positioning, which isn't really his fault, as much as the coaches. There were some articles about it.

Of course, with MLBAM here, defensive metrics are on the cusp of obsolescence.

No, they're on the cusp of actually becoming pretty damn accurate. It'll be interesting to see how (or if) things change for some guys like Hech where what we see doesn't match with the numbers.

Fair enough. I should have said they are on the cusp of a major overhaul as it becomes possible to test them against truer performance measures.

Gibby bunting with Melky in the Spring is retarded

yeah might as well just never practice it in a game situation so when he's called upon to do it in the regular season he isn't prepared..so retarded...

So that type of situation can't be simulated? WTF?

Well, the numbers produced by MLBAM will be used to create the data sets used in the new metrics, so it's not really about testing them.

What could be a REALLY interesting side note is to also see some of the improvement in offensive stats and predictions the new data can produce, such as a proper speed index which could possibly be used to more accurately predict aging. We could also see BABIP be eliminated (and it's about time).

Heh, you read my mind, lol. That or common sense, right?

I didn't think it even deserved a reply, seemed so straight forward

By that logic you can get your timing down in a simulated game as well..

Where the F*** was the cut off man and why didn't the throw go through to him? Spring training yes, but that's pretty f***ing fundamental.

Yeah but you can't create new datasets reto-actively hence the interest of testing the current formulas. Then again, there may be no way to adjust for flaws in the old datasets. The flaws will be there even if you tinker with the formula.

I see your point. Yeah, the old formulas may be tweakable for previous seasons, but the flaws will remain (just may not dominate as much).

Is gameday lying or has Jeremy Jeffress really thrown 12 or 13 pitches for strikes lol.

Gameday pitch counts aren't accurate for spring training (unless they've changed something recently). An out is 1 strike, a strikeout is 3 strikes, and a walk is 4 balls. I think the first pitch is also counted, along with plays (WP, SB, etc). Other than that, nothing counts.

This team f***ing blows. Can we just tank.

Based off spring training. You are wise far beyond measure

Gameday is never accurate in ST. Every strikeout is listed as a 3 pitch K, every ball in play is listed as 1 pitch AB and all walks are listed as 4 straight walks, regardless of how many pitches actually occurred in the PA
