JJippidy Verified Member Posted March 8, 2014 Posted March 8, 2014 Ive had a few drinks, im not a santana fan, but even i know 200 innings from the 5 spot on a one year deal makes a lot of f***ing sense, but hey i guess aa likes the internal options of 500 walks per 9 from drabek and morrows ability to project as an ace for 5 starts before his upper torso dislocates from his legs.

Drabek's low on the totem pole, he can't throw strikes. I expect nothing more than 125IP from Morrow. If they don't get a solid 190IP+ solution it will be a revolving door of starters this year which is usually not a recipe for success.
JJippidy Verified Member Posted March 8, 2014 Posted March 8, 2014 I hear you but to be honest were looking at hutch drabek stroman as guys who could snag a spot that have potential beyond a few good starts that buck their curve, aka warm bodies who might hit replacement production. The depth exists, ill admitt that, but i think its half a mirage, depth needs to go beyond mere numbers, especially when the list is populated by untested rookies, guys with control problems and tj recoveries. This took me 20 minutes ti spell correct into coherence, f*** you all and have a good night, peace.

Most web browsers have built in spell check but they can only decipher so much. Drunk as f***.
JJippidy Verified Member Posted March 8, 2014 Posted March 8, 2014 Brah, android can only do so much, a few whiskeys sure, beyond that youre on your own. But serious question, jays dont sign santana, whats the narrative, how would they spin it and would it lend credence to aa beying the shot caller or rogers dictating payroll? Im torn, dont really like him, but love the idea of an eady one year deal. Whats the risk?

vic city Verified Member Posted March 8, 2014 Posted March 8, 2014 AA will actually save face if he signs Santana. I agree with the decision to not qualify JJ and by the looks of it we might even be able to get Santana a bit cheaper than $14.1M. Who cares about the 2nd rd pick, by the time that player even has a shot at the big club Bautista and EE will be long gone. Plus we could possibly turn the pick into a 1st if we qualify Santana and he doesn't accept. It makes so much sense for us, even AA has to know that. Judging by our pitching this spring, I don't see us much ahead of where we were last year. This is our only shot this year. Dickey said it best, bust and it's all blown up. Also, it's a win-win for Rogers. If they invest in Santana and we do good - they make money. But if we do poorly, we'll go into full rebuild mode and slash our payroll in half. Otherwise just start the rebuild now and get it over with!
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted March 8, 2014 Posted March 8, 2014 Davidi: Jays have perfect opportunity to land Santana http://www.sportsnet.ca/baseball/mlb/jays-have-perfect-opportunity-to-land-santana/
jays4life19 Old-Timey Member Posted March 8, 2014 Posted March 8, 2014 Dooo it. Santana + Hutch 4 and 5 please.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted March 8, 2014 Posted March 8, 2014 Davidi: Really, there is no excuse at this point for general manager Alex Anthopoulos not to aggressively pursue the free-agent right-hander and stabilize a rotation that badly needs another supporting pillar, especially with J.A. Happ’s back woes and dodgy command leaving a substantial crack in a shaky foundation. Up until the events of the past few days – when shifts within Santana’s representation seem to have left the 31-year-old with Jay Alou as his agent – a reasonable case could be made against anteing up the roughly $50 million over four years he was believed to be seeking. As Anthopoulos, speaking in general terms, put it on Feb. 20, “It’s a comparison, how much better are they than what you have? We have to make that evaluation. Term and dollars are important. You like every player, but at certain years and dollars they don’t make sense for us.” But on a one-year deal, the conversation shifts dramatically on a number of fronts. First and foremost, adding Santana would allow the Blue Jays to run out a rotation of him, R.A. Dickey, Mark Buehrle, Brandon Morrow and Drew Hutchison without depending on Happ to play a substantial role. One of Happ, Esmil Rogers or Todd Redmond could then serve as the long man/sixth starter out of the bullpen, while buying more development time for Marcus Stroman and more recovery time for Kyle Drabek. ... Ultimately, though, there’s no arguing that the Blue Jays would be a better team with Santana on it, and it makes business sense to spend an extra $8-$12 million to support the roughly $135 million in payroll commitments already in place. Go boom or bust in 2014, since if things go awry the current Blue Jays core will probably need to be turned over, anyway.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted March 8, 2014 Posted March 8, 2014 Dooo it. Santana + Hutch 4 and 5 please. Yep. And if/when Morrow or someone else goes on DL you have Happ or Stroman to step in.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted March 8, 2014 Posted March 8, 2014 Davidi speckin' the truth Listen to him AA
jays4life19 Old-Timey Member Posted March 8, 2014 Posted March 8, 2014 I'm getting excited. This is not going to end well.
TwistedLogic Old-Timey Member Posted March 8, 2014 Posted March 8, 2014 So whatever happened to that string fellow? http://calibermag.org/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/pedosmile.png
ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted March 8, 2014 Posted March 8, 2014 I disagree with Davidi on Hutchison being the #5, I think you start him in the minors as the #1 depth option unless Happ can be traded or is on the DL. And even then, Rogers may do the job for a bit. Best thing to do would be to sign Santana and swallow your pride by dealing Happ for salary relief.
TwistedLogic Old-Timey Member Posted March 8, 2014 Posted March 8, 2014 I don't care if we don't get Santana and go with Happ or Stroman in the 5th spot. In a year where the chances of making the playoffs are s*** to none, I don't mind keeping the 2nd rounder. Last year that one pick got us all three of Hollon, Brentz and Tellez.

I don't mind standing pat, but the franchise has said it's trying to contend now and have made moves accordingly so that's the context by which the team is being judged. No doubt Hollon has some nice upside, that could turn out to be a really good pick. Gotta also love the upside Brentz has.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted March 8, 2014 Posted March 8, 2014 This was not an off season to stand pat. That was pretty much the only thing to NOT do. Either throw more money at it to try for a contender or blow it up. There should have been no in between this off season. The circumstances did not favour that. Not saying he had to make 5 trades and 2 FA signings. But just try to legitimately add some wins. There were plenty of opportunities to do so. There still are!
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted March 8, 2014 Posted March 8, 2014 Truth bombs layed out by Davidi everywhere, time to step up Rogers err AA. Yep. Everyone is exposing the team's sudden ill-advised cheapness. How can he look fans in the eye and say he is trying to make the team better?? How can he start the off season saying he needs to address the rotation and suddenly say internal options are better? Davidi and Boras and Rosenthal have all called ******** and I love it.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted March 8, 2014 Posted March 8, 2014 I understand all of this, but if Rogers is hand-cuffing him, what's he supposed to do? f***ed if I know.

I've gotten numb to that by this point, this team has been "in-between" for 20 years, hard to see anything changing at this point. The only thing we can hope for, now that the offseason is over and nothing was done, is that the players themselves collectively step up. The front office always gets the s***, and almost all of the time, it is deserved, but the onus is heavily on the players as well. Nobody expected the Athletics team a few years ago to do what they did, that was all on the players. If Johnson hadn't pitched like a turd, we wouldn't be complaining about the stupidity of not qualifying him. If Melky didn't have a tumor, if Happ didn't get hit in the face, if Reyes didn't take that s***** slide, if Morrow didn't wind up with some stupid nerve issue, we wouldn't be complaining about not making the playoffs, we'd be talking about what we need to do to repeat making the post-season. And yet, the team would have been the same as it is now. The players on this team still have what it takes to make a contender, I really don't see a guy like Santana being the one to tip it one way or another. If we get him, good I guess, if we don't, I don't really care at all. Out of every free agent that was on the market this year, he was the least appealing to me.

Yeah, all good points F'n Josh Johnson goddammit. What a disaster. No one would have predicted that. Anyhow I just think a few things HAD to be done this off season unless you are throwing in the towel: 1. Get rid of JPA (done) 2. Trade an optionless reliever or two (done but one more should go) 3. Sign a FA starter 4. Sign a FA 2B or trade for one I would have been good with the above. Heck, at this point I'm OK if they sign Santana on a 1 year deal now and pry a 2B from Seattle or Philadelphia when those teams are out of contention by June. I just no longer trusts that those things will happen.

A reliever will have to be traded either before OD or soon thereafter.
ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted March 8, 2014 Posted March 8, 2014 Ah, right. When you think about it, it's not a bad return for a guy like Lincoln although it was with Amaro Jr. I think Cecil could get a similar or better return. I still think we see some trade action late in ST.
