GD Old-Timey Member Posted January 13, 2014 Posted January 13, 2014 GD was the one thanking, so... there ya go. 3 It was a joke, wasn't it? Please tell me the guy was joking.
NorthOf49 Old-Timey Member Posted January 13, 2014 Posted January 13, 2014 3 It was a joke, wasn't it? Please tell me the guy was joking. Of course it was a joke, he was making light of the situation. The guy couldn't actually think that any two opposing possibilities in the universe have equal chances of happening (his suggested definition of '50/50'). That's preposterous. In fact, it's impossible for anything to truly have 50/50 odds.

In fact, it's impossible for anything to truly have 50/50 odds. There was a TEACHER at my school last year that taught that as fact. I s*** you not. They were the athlete kids and they desperately needed good teaching and now they think "either it happens or it doesn't" and I love it.
DuckDuckGose Verified Member Posted January 13, 2014 Posted January 13, 2014 You have to simplify concepts to teach people. If you need help with fractions that's probably a good start.

In fact, it's impossible for anything to truly have 50/50 odds. The only reason 50/50 would be impossible is that it is impossible to completely accurately measure the odds for anything. Which may be true. I actually don't know. I imagine it ends up being a quantum/particle physics issue. Would there not be some physical processes for which we know the probability of one state or the other occurring?

If you were going to actually dumb it down to a simple fraction you'd use 1/30 or 1/8 (or whatever the number teams are rumoured to be interested is). 50/50 doesn't make any sense.

Can you give an example of such a physical process?

Not if there are 15 Masohiro Tanakas. Who knows, maybe Rakuten has a cloning machine. It is known that they were looking for a loophole that allows them to get more than $20M for him. This could be a possibility.

DuckDuckGose Verified Member Posted January 13, 2014 Posted January 13, 2014 I don't think anything can be calculated with perfect precision. Can you give an example of such a physical process? You can't accurately measure a physical process without disrupting the system. You have to analyze how you;ve changed the system and adjust accordingly. The second you do that you are adding error bars and degrees of uncertainty.

There is that aspect but he addressed that and also said " In fact, it's impossible for anything to truly have 50/50 odds." Which I actually agree with.
saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted January 13, 2014 Posted January 13, 2014 Holy f***, the guy was being facetious???? yeah...this is getting dumb...I wish Tanaka would just sign wherever he is going to sign, so we could move on to Garza, jimenez and Santana...
connorp Old-Timey Member Posted January 14, 2014 Posted January 14, 2014 If i remember right.. Even the coin flip is not 50/50.. I think theres some weight diff or something that gives heads a slight edge

I think theres some weight diff or something that gives heads a slight edge Yep. And even if the weight was exactly even, the air you flipped it in would have irregularities, the table you flipped it onto wouldn't be perfectly smooth, the flip would be imperfect, etc.
connorp Old-Timey Member Posted January 14, 2014 Posted January 14, 2014 Lol..poor guy was clearly just saying 50-50 in jest though

That also is a reflection of how dead any jays news is but when you have no money what the f*** can you do .All AA can do is wait and hope some Bull pens get decimated by injury in spring training .

I'm not so sure about not being able to spend a little more. Seems like Rogers is hell bent on dominating the sports landscape with all their teams. http://www.sportsnet.ca/soccer/mls/teams/toronto-fc/toronto-fc-jermain-defoe-michael-bradley-toronto-raptors-lebron-james-toronto-maple-leafs/

I don't think it's about money right now, the Jays and every other team in mlb need the Tanaka domino to fall, at which point the rest of them will sign probably within a week. I'm sure AA has many fall back trades set up to lose once other teams finish up with the free agent market.
