John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted December 27, 2013 Posted December 27, 2013 Provides accompanying article explaining his thought processes
jays_fever Old-Timey Member Posted December 27, 2013 Posted December 27, 2013 "First time I have not voted for him, and only because my ballot got too crowded. Seven more home runs would have elevated McGriff to 500, making him more of an obvious call. Voters need to look closer: McGriff’s career OPS-plus was higher than that of Hall of Fame first baseman Eddie Murray." That sums up how stupid the criteria is. He votes for McGriff all of the previous years, but suddenly says f*** him because other elite players are on the ballot as well (not that McGriff was elite). I also dont understand how him playing 1 more injury riddled year and hitting 7 more home runs would have put his career over the top

Atothe Old-Timey Member Posted December 27, 2013 Posted December 27, 2013 Provides accompanying article explaining his thought processes I think he is shortsighted but I like that he doesn't hide his ballot like other voters who know they will be ridiculed for making a mockery of the process.
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted December 27, 2013 Author Posted December 27, 2013 "In recent years, I have not voted for any first-timers, using my ballot as a form of protest, a way to distinguish players from the Steroid Era (however undefined it might be) from the greats of the past." Hate s*** like this... Just vote for who you think should be in, it's really a joke that writers like him feel the need to add their own ego to the voting
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted December 27, 2013 Author Posted December 27, 2013 I think he is shortsighted but I like that he doesn't hide his ballot like other voters who know they will be ridiculed for making a mockery of the process. I like it too, but when you put something like this out there and then end with "I won’t pretend my ballot is perfect. No ballot is perfect. All voters can do is take their best shot every year. And then try again." .... You're basically saying " I have a vote for the HOF and I can be as retarded as I want to be every year since nobody can really tell me I'm wrong."

You're basically saying " I have a vote for the HOF and I can be as retarded as I want to be every year since nobody can really tell me I'm wrong." it doesn't matter because we will have to wait another 10 years or so for rational baseball writers to start flooding in before a logical shift takes place
TwistedLogic Old-Timey Member Posted December 27, 2013 Posted December 27, 2013 How exactly are the voters picked? Can someone like Dave Cameron ever get a vote for the Hall of Fame? Edit: Or does he already have a vote? If so, I'm still curious how they give votes.
Atothe Old-Timey Member Posted December 27, 2013 Posted December 27, 2013 How exactly are the voters picked? Can someone like Dave Cameron ever get a vote for the Hall of Fame? Be part of the BBWAA for 10 years and then you get a ballot
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted December 27, 2013 Author Posted December 27, 2013 How exactly are the voters picked? Can someone like Dave Cameron ever get a vote for the Hall of Fame? Edit: Or does he already have a vote? If so, I'm still curious how they give votes. And the way it started out was writers in each baseball city were given votes because way back in the day, writers only really followed their own teams around, national exposure was just nowhere near the level it is today. And you never lose you vote, so the 80 year old dinosaurs that haven't covered baseball in 20 years still get to vote. It's too bad Stephen Brunt gave up his vote years ago knowing the controversy that the steroid era would cause, he'd be a guy I'd really like to hear from about all this
TwistedLogic Old-Timey Member Posted December 27, 2013 Posted December 27, 2013 But how does one become a member of the BBWAA? I'm assuming guys on Fan590/Sportsnet get consideration, do guys on FanGraphs get just as much? Does the outlet for which the writer writes have a significant impact? I mean I don't imagine bloggers would ever get a vote. Could someone like Tim Dierkes of MLBTR end up with a vote some day?

GD Old-Timey Member Posted December 27, 2013 Posted December 27, 2013 So writing for blogs can get you into the BBWAA? f***, then I should be in the BBWAA. If we can call what I do writing.

In 2007 the BBWAA expanded it's membership to allow "full-time baseball writers who work for websites that are credentialed by MLB for post-season coverage." No bloggers allowed. TheHurl Site Manager Posted December 27, 2013 Posted December 27, 2013 This message board f***ed me from getting my 10 years on the MLB official message board. I'd love for just one player to admit that 90% of the players took something...and then we can get past this. Hard to believe that all of this can be blamed on the Iraq war.

TheHurl Site Manager Posted December 27, 2013 Posted December 27, 2013 I'm actually a huge Raines supporter but I enjoyed saying this anyway.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted December 27, 2013 Posted December 27, 2013 You mean other than Canseco? yes someone who doesn't say it while asking for millions of dollars.

Randy The Robot Verified Member Posted December 27, 2013 Posted December 27, 2013 I was quite positive you were the guy in your avatar. I'm disappointed now.

Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted December 27, 2013 Posted December 27, 2013 People can say what they want about his voting process or whatever, but I look at his picks and they are all 10 legit and defend-able choices. He's hit his limit so I'm not sure how people can complain about any of his snubs, no matter what his reasons were. It's not like he's putting Ray Durham and Mike Timlin on his ballot just to prove some kind of stupid point.

When have you ever seen Rosenthal as confrontational to anyone let alone his peers?
connorp Old-Timey Member Posted December 27, 2013 Posted December 27, 2013 Steroid issue aside.. Voters should be disbarred for purposely not voing for someone first ballot because "they arent Derek Jeter"...or any past legend. Its stupid and shows the writers have a clear bias. On steroids..idk..i guess you can only hang the people that got linked. But we dont know if Griffey, Jeter, and other guys like that were using.. Actually or even that the best power hitter now (Davis) is even clean.. The whole thing is shadowy deal
connorp Old-Timey Member Posted December 27, 2013 Posted December 27, 2013 Thought you were a lot older. You look 15. Any chance you see, you always call out people on their looks. Ive seen it like 4x now. I mean, are you a model or something??..or just a keyboard Casanova living in lollypop land on the internet? You should post your pic. Your REAL pic.
