Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted January 10, 2014 Posted January 10, 2014 Yep. It is said that $14M per is the new asking price... if so something like $12M per is a realistic price. 4/48 is a very reasonable deal IMO. We need to get him locked up before one of the five teams that lose out on Tanaka gets desperate and blows their load on Jimenez. If that process drags out until February, Jimenez will get restless and may sign. If Tanaka signs in the next week, we're likely locked out of Jimenez. 3Ys/37M + option 14M
JaysAllMighty Old-Timey Member Posted January 10, 2014 Posted January 10, 2014 I prefer that we get Jimenez over the unproven MLB Tanaka. Get it done AA.
z3r0s Old-Timey Member Posted January 10, 2014 Posted January 10, 2014 3Ys/37M + option 14M I'm sure that's too low for him to accept. I'd do 42/3 with a 14M option (with a healthy buyout) in a heartbeat.
Brenner Verified Member Posted January 10, 2014 Posted January 10, 2014 3Ys/37M + option 14M That looks good to me, the option probably need a 3M buyout to push the guaranteed dollars to $40mil/3. But my guess is to get him to Toronto will need to pay the full $14 mil per. But I very much like a 3 yr deal with 4th year option, maybe even a 5th year option? I like options.

GeorgiaPeach Verified Member Posted January 10, 2014 Posted January 10, 2014 Apparently Dodgers will not be out-bid for Tanaka. Weren't the Cubs saying the same thing?
Ehjays Verified Member Posted January 10, 2014 Posted January 10, 2014 Weren't the Cubs saying the same thing? One of them is gonna be wrong!

Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted January 10, 2014 Posted January 10, 2014 Apparently Dodgers will not be out-bid for Tanaka. I wonder how much of Beckett's contract they'd be willing to "eat"? Maybe we could toss Romero back their way plus a reliever or something.
Convo Verified Member Posted January 10, 2014 Posted January 10, 2014 I would do that in a heartbeat. http://www.hurr-durr.com/
jaysfan2014 Old-Timey Member Posted January 10, 2014 Posted January 10, 2014 John Shea @JohnSheaHey I hear Masahiro Tanaka's three preferred spots going in are LA, NY and Boston, so five teams. #dodgers #angels #yankees #mets #redsox So basically it's between the Dodgers, Angels, Yankees and maybe Mets, as the Red Sox don't have room on the roster. However, where he goes depends on how much money he gets and from whom.
L54 Old-Timey Member Posted January 10, 2014 Posted January 10, 2014 Might as well just sign Jimenez now
DuckDuckGose Verified Member Posted January 10, 2014 Posted January 10, 2014 Jimenez is going to wait for Tanaka to sign. Whoever misses out on Tanaka will be in on Jimenez and there really is no incentive for him or his agent to push for a deal until Tanaka is off the market.
DuckDuckGose Verified Member Posted January 10, 2014 Posted January 10, 2014 I would do that in a heartbeat. I'd rather go after Cahill.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted January 10, 2014 Posted January 10, 2014 Might as well just sign Jimenez now Yep. No way we realistically get Tanaka. But Jimenez prob waiting.
TBJ12 Verified Member Posted January 10, 2014 Posted January 10, 2014 Apparently Dodgers will not be out-bid for Tanaka. So much for all teams having a fair shot at signing the player. I'd rather they just went back to the old system. If teams want to make statements like this, lets see them back it up. If the Dodgers, Cubs or Yankees are going to sign Tanaka at any cost, I'd rather see it be a blind bid of around $150M.
xposbrad Verified Member Posted January 11, 2014 Posted January 11, 2014 Weren't the Cubs saying the same thing? Except if he wants to play in NY/LA or boston like what is being said, then he'd probably go to LA. Plus, they will have one of the best rotations in baseball with him there, if not the best.
Cooler Heads Prevail Verified Member Posted January 11, 2014 Posted January 11, 2014 It's pretty sad that this thread has 25K views and 45 pages and we have zero chance of landing Tanaka. There was never zero chance. For those who think Toronto can't draw good players, the soccer team that has been hopelessly bad for its entire history just signed several world class players. Management just decided to do it. It's the same with the Jays. If management wanted to make a splash they could of. They may choose not to. And I defy anyone to explain how the soccer team can afford those contracts but supposedly the Jays have to be careful about their budget. Why are people concerned how much money Rogers makes ( a lot or a little more then a lot ? ). Corporate world is often about greed at the top, if the Jays let the team be noncompetitive they lose lots of viewership and probably lose some profits. Tanaka chances are over ? Rumours are not truth. Until he signs I don't presume anything, but you seem very confidant you must work with AA and get your information direct right ? You couldn't possibly be basing your statement on online gossip that would be absurd.
o2cui2i Community Moderator Posted January 11, 2014 Posted January 11, 2014 I've heard Tanaka loves Toronto, he's signing here folks!! AA needs to send in his secret weapon, Kawasaki to talk Tanaka into coming to the Jays on the cheap.
xposbrad Verified Member Posted January 11, 2014 Posted January 11, 2014 I've heard Tanaka loves Toronto, he's signing here folks!! I heard he loves the weather, taxes, and chances of winning with toronto so it's a done deal, I bet.
jays4life19 Old-Timey Member Posted January 11, 2014 Posted January 11, 2014 I think with the revelation that big markets like the Dodgers and Cubs claiming they "won't be outbid" and the fact that he prefers New York, Chicago, Boston and LA as cities to play in that the only way he lands in Toronto is if we give him such a ridiculous contract (which we won't do). At this point i think it's time to move on and start talking to Garza as long as the medicals check out.
Chappy Community Moderator Posted January 11, 2014 Posted January 11, 2014 I've heard Tanaka loves Toronto, he's signing here folks!! I doubt it. I think we end up with either Santana or Jimenez.

Yeah who wouldn't want to live in a city that has no electricity for two weeks and a crack head right wing whack job (I wanna be George W Bush) mayor? 4 months of -10 and 4 months of brutal humidity and a last place team. Or you can live in LA with the movie stars, beaches filled with 5'11 leggy big boobed blond models. Nothing against our Canadian girls but when they're wearing parkas half the year - well I'm not sure what Canada can offer him. I hope he goes to the Cubs or some NL team. Like I say - the only way we land him is with some serious PR convincing him how good Toronto is - but they should try and sell him on Canada over just Toronto - Vancouver, PEI - give him homes in different provinces - be a national here over just a city hero etc. And we probably have to offer him my earlier suggested 7 year contract with a 7 year vesting option (or three 5 year deals rolling over that vest to another 5 and vests again to another 5 basically giving him a 15 year deal if he hits IP minimums)- kinda similar to what we gave Dave Stieb but updated for modern times. I'd have no problem if he were a sure ace - if LA and Chicago with their scouts thinks he worth "not being outbid" then they think he's a true ACE. I'd offer the 15 year contract - if for no other reason that it will force the other clubs to spend a lot lot more money and years on him. AA should publicly offer a 15 year $375 million contract - forcing other clubs to pay more. Reducing luxury tax space of the Yankees or other teams has value. Baseball isn't a fair playing field like other sports - so play the REAL Game AA which is all about money. Bill Maher http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vb9JMno7g7Y

connorp Old-Timey Member Posted January 11, 2014 Posted January 11, 2014 (edited) How's the sushi in TO? That could be big factor. If thats a fail the only real choice is to sign him to a 20year deal (i dont think 15 goes far enough) and offer him a front office position after that (hope the sarcasm is obvious but you never know) Edited January 11, 2014 by connorp
