So long Janssen, thanks for everything!

With Janssen being gone (and assuming McGowan), who is the longest-standing Blue Jay?

Romero?

If we're talking about time on the big league club, that would be Bautista. He was here in 2008.

Cecil & E5 have been here since 2008.

You call THAT snow?? :)

Pando probably thinks it's ice cream. Hence the glee.

Now that is said if true. I guess Bautista would be the longest standing active Blue Jay? AA has done a stellar job of 'cleaning house'.

Bautista is a couple weeks away from getting his 10-and-5 rights, so yeah, I'd say it's probably Bautista.

Edwin was acquired in '09 and then lost to the Athletics on waivers in 2010. We got him back after the Athletics released him.

Gordon Beckham back to White Sox 1 year, $2M. Dayan Viciedo DFAd. Should the Jays take a shot at him?

He's pretty bad. Can't blame the CWS for the DFA. I wouldn't want to give him a spot on the 25 man roster.

If we could teach him to play 1B he might be an upgrade over Smoak..

Jays have Pillar and Dirks as the 4th OF. Viciedo isn't a significant upgrade on either. Would pass.

Smoak at least has seasons where he's been a above average MLB hitter, Viciedo hasn't had a single season at or over 100 wRC+. Smoak also has the better plate discipline with a better walk and strike out rates. They both have power so that is a wash. Defensively Smoak is probably average at 1B and Viciedo would probably be around the same if not worse at 1B. How is he a upgrade over Smoak?

#Dbacks have named Joe Carter as a Special Assistant to General Manager Dave Stewart. What a great hitter he was. Loved watching him play.

DBacks just keep adding brilliant baseball minds to the front office.

Maybe they are going to try to cultivate clutch hitting ability.

I was thinking this. I'd prefer him to Smoak but we have no idea how well he would translate to first, do we? He is younger and has a lot more power upside than Smoak. They should take a shot at him if they are confident he is passable at 1st.

He's already below replacement on the OF. No reason to think he'd be any better at first. He has power upside but overall he's at best a league average hitter. Smoak beats him in plate discipline and also has some power potential himself.

Lind was absolutely terrible in the OF and passable at first when he wasn't in bitch mode about his back, so maybe they have some scouting analysis suggesting Viciedo could translate well to 1B? Viciedo's bat has a much higher ceiling IMO but I agree a lower floor since he is a total hacker most nights.

I think Smoak's ceiling is much much higher.

Based on former prospect status? I disagree, he's never really shown huge power potential. Viciedo has, there's more to it than that but I tend to prefer taking a chance on Viciedo. Hopefully Smoak proves me wrong and turns into a nice cheap find.

What? That's his career.

Oh sorry, ok. So that's pretty good. But I mean, that's not really big power. I don't even know why this is a discussion Viciedo's power > Smoak's but obviously Smoak is better in some other aspects like plate discipline and probably defence at 1B.

Ok agree to disagree. 20 HR/600 in Safeco is way less than Viciedo's power potential, the guy is 3 years younger than Smoak. He has much more raw power, and no that doesn't mean he's better than Smoak. Look at Juan Francisco, nobody's going to question his insane power, I'd say Viciedo is a similar (not exact) type of player but is a bit younger and could break through.
