Jake Peavy signs with San Fran for 2/24

12 million a year for Peavy!?

Jesus these pitchers are getting way too much money this year.

Smith is supposed to play 1B. Can't speak for the rest. To move in about 6 or 7 wins...they have moved about 4 wins to the bench or will deal them for not much (this doesn't include the assets they . Outside of Upton the highest Steamer projection goes to a player they will have as a backup.

Bench/minors projections

Alonso 1.8

Venable 1.0

Spangenberg 0.6 (in 325 PA)

Maybin 0.6 (in 210 PA)

If any of those guys had much for trade value it would be very different but I don't think they do.

It's too bad Maybin makes 6-7 million. If they were dumping him I think he'd be a nice add for the Jays. Higher upside than Pillar IMO.

The guys has never had a season below 1.7 fWAR. Not saying he'll end up worth $12M for two but it's probably right around his value.

Rape job by the Yankees. The Padres are getting it in all holes. Terrible trade. Prado is a bum.

This post is funny for at least three different reasons.

Myers and Kemp are long-term Padres(regardless of Kemp's injuries), Upton is a one-year stopgap until another young outfielder (Liriano?) emerges, and they had a lot of farm pieces to deal. They still have a gaping hole at 1B, and Quentin's bad contract. Plus, they still have to fight the Dodgers and Giants.

The Jays are already deep offensively, and really only need a 2B and bullpen help. Padres needed to make these deals because the team had a strong farm, but no free agents will sign in San Diego due to offensive suppression. So they used the pieces to get Kemp, Myers and Upton. And yet their farm is still strong. Remember, the Padres offense was terrible last season.

I hate this kind of false-dichotomy. This is exactly the kind of garbage reasoning that jusitified the big Jays/Marlins trade. It's not an either/or choice between doing nothing and doing something completely fool-hardy. You can make changes sensibly. Going all in when you're not already in a position of strength almost never works. It's self destructive. The only buzz that's worth a damn is the buzz you create by winning.

You're outlook is mine on said situation, but MLB Central, etc, has now put the Padres as the "BEST" off-season thus far, they've stirred up a ton of talk, and simply looks like PR moves to me, for the old school casuals, they'll win in ticket sales, no doubt, on the field, not so much, IMO.

I've seen hobbyist mechanics fixing broken s*** in their garages take in fewer pieces of damaged goods than the Padres. But I suppose with the working body parts of all the pieces they've landed this week they could cobble together a pretty good pitcher-outfielder with various patches of different skin colours. That's probably worth some WAR, or something.

Hah...well played.

I think this Yankees trade is great for them. Eovaldi and Jones for Prado and Phelps.

Pisses me off more regarding the trade deadline. Couldve had Prado for nothing. Flipped him with a Marco Estrada or something similar to Phelps, for Eovaldi. He'd look nice at the back of the Jays rotation, pushing back Sanchez to the pen.

Eeeeeeww...Eovaldi is overrated, IMO.

I know that the A's will probably come out on top one way or another, but I don't take back my original comment. As much as the A's have won and gotten to the playoffs, I don't think I'd actually trade being a Jays fan for being an A's fan.

The process might lead to success, but the process they use absolutely screams the idea that "this is a business, not a sport". Sports are supposed to be for people's enjoyment. Sure winning is enjoying, but so is having baseball heroes, childhood memories and sentimental s*** like jerseys and bobble heads.

People growing up as A's fans don't often have that. Even if all these players they've acquired pan out and turn into superstars, what does that even mean for the A's. They traded Norris with 4 years of control left. They traded Donaldson with 4 years of control. Cespedes was adored by A's fans, and he only wore the green for two full seasons.

Even if these guys turn into stars, if you're an A's fan, you have to believe they'll just be re-traded sooner rather than later. I'd hate to follow a team that works like that.

Yet, he's been successful turning over rosters, time over time, I don't think A's fans are worrying, growing up in that scenario bodes well for fans, young and old. They're accustomed to competing, and making the PS, accordingly for a few years at a time, I grew up with that in Gillick.
