BlueJayWay Verified Member Posted November 24, 2014 Posted November 24, 2014 And Sandoval looks poised to sign, 5 years/about $100M.. holy overpay, Batman! http://boston.cbslocal.com/2014/11/24/report-pablo-sandoval-agrees-to-terms-with-red-sox/ Something about these deals screams desperation.. Cherington must be under orders to put a decent team on the field or else, no rebuilding allowed! When they finish, likely trading for SP and maybe getting Lester back, the team will have an empty farm system and no payroll flexibility again.. the same thing the got Boston in trouble in 2011-12 and caused the Dodgers to bail them out. Not gonna happen this time.. Dodgers have payroll issues themselves. I was thinking this sounds a lot like AGon/Crawford/Beckett again. They were lucky to have the Dodgers to bail them out last time.
Atothe Old-Timey Member Posted November 24, 2014 Posted November 24, 2014 red sox are stuffed to the brim with talent, would love if you they would considered trading Betts or Bogaerts to the jays
Cobean Verified Member Posted November 24, 2014 Posted November 24, 2014 I am a Jays fans living in Boston and no one locally ever thought they would go for both. It does make some sense when you think of it though. If they re-sign Lester and Miller and trade Cespedes (plus) to Seattle for Iwakuma as rumoured then they really did not touch their farm system and end up with a pretty f***ing good team. Payroll wise its a clusterf***, but we all know Henry has money to burn, especially once he flips the Boston Globe property for redevelopment. Betts, Pedroia, Ortiz, Ramirez, Sandoval, Napoli, Bogaerts, Castillo, Vazquez. Followed by possibly Lester, Iwakuma, Buchholz, Kelly and De la Rosa is a pretty damn good team. Especially with Uehara, Miller (possibly), Mujica, Workman, Tazawa rounding out the Pen. Of course this could blow up in their face and they do not re-sign Lester, lets hope that happens and this turns to s***.

They were lucky to have the Dodgers to bail them out last time. That's the same way I felt. They've blown $185-190M already overnight($37-38M on the payroll for 2015) and they still haven't added any pitching. They're now up to $153M after these deals on 11 players.. these deals likely mean they're trading for a SP because Lester seems headed elsewhere.. signing Lester for the money that he's headed for, plus arb raises, will put them over the tax. And their OF, SP and bullpen aren't any clearer..
BigBounceyBlueBalls Old-Timey Member Posted November 24, 2014 Posted November 24, 2014 These signings are great news for the Jays if in fact AA is in win now f*** the future panic mode to save his job! And Rogers Is drunk and willing to spend the money! Hello, Shields,Headley and Cruz? Andrew miller come on down!
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted November 24, 2014 Posted November 24, 2014 ^ maybe they have a higher budget than you are aware of

They had such success in 2013 by acquiring mid-tier veterans on short contracts that you would think they would try to mirror that approach. Cherrington is one of the hardest GMs to figure out.

Seattle is expected to contend next year.. they're not making that deal. And Andrew Miller isn't returning to Boston.. these signings pretty much close the door, as they need SP more than relief. And Lester will likely end up with the Cubs.

Last year scared them like 2011 scared them. Afraid to rely on such young players. Middlebrooks flopped, JBJ flopped, De la Rosa couldn't throw anything with movement, Workman was terrible and Webster didn't know where the ball was going. Bogaerts can hit adequately for a shortstop but his defense was not good and you can't play holt everywhere at once.
Atothe Old-Timey Member Posted November 24, 2014 Posted November 24, 2014 If that Iwakuma for Cespedes rumor actually happens, my god are they ridiculously good

This wave will make adjustments and there's another one right behind it and another one after that. A little patience and some mid tier free agents would have probably been fine. That being said, they have deep pockets and the controllable talent will help offset some of the payroll bloat down the road. They're still in a good situation no matter what. No a lot of teams have their mix of prospect capital and plain old capital.

I hope you are right, but I have a hard time believing they throw all this money at hitting and have nothing on reserve to spend on the rotation. That rotation as of today is horrible. What everyone is saying is this does not prevent them from signing Lester or Miller, but we shall see.

Sammy225 Old-Timey Member Posted November 24, 2014 Posted November 24, 2014 Anyone surprised not to hear NYY names in anything right now. You would think they would be trying to get better as other AL East teams are improving.

Normally you hear that they are in on everyone and now its unsettling about how quiet they are.... Like they are planning something lol.

John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted November 27, 2014 Posted November 27, 2014 This just in, Kevin Barker on Tim and Sid, when speaking about the chances of Xander Bogaerts being traded says he's a good young, player, lots up upside at short stop, but he's a lot like Ryan Goins in then uncertainty of the bat. Yip, you heard it from Barker. Bogaerts is comparable to Ryan Goins. How is this guy employed?
