What the f***ing point to reaching out to all these players that you aren't going to sign? Like yeah Markakis could make sense on a 1/5 contract but everyone knows he won't sign for that so no point in even wasting your time.

PR purposes. When the offseason ends and AA has done nothing, he can point to those rumors, shrug his shoulders, and say "hey, we tried."

More likely now. This is precedent setting. A 36-year old bat-only player has never received money like this (IIRC). Bau will be looking at 4/80 and Edwin like 5/100 if they have good 2016 seasons.

Ortiz is the closest I can think of, and as good as V-Mart's season was, he had a career year at the age of 36, while the former is a better hitter.

It probably actually has an effect the other way. Gets people's hopes up for nothing. At this point even the casual fans have the "sign him before we get excited" approach

Yeah, and like Terninator said he's been unable to land a deal like this. This deal is just insane.

Yea Ortiz is a superior hitter and he's on like his third straight contract that hasn't exceeded 2 guaranteed years.

V-Mart deal is $17M per year, so $68M for the 4.

Terrible deal. Despite his plate discipline, he's getting way overpaid for a career year in 2014. I mean, $17M/year for a DH, yet David Ortiz is getting paid less for better numbers.. Detroit is really desperate for a World Series before Illitch passes away.

Nelson Cruz's agent is probably fapping so hard right now

Especially considering Cruz can play defense and V-Mart can't (his 1B work is AWFUL.) O's better start looking for a different option.. Cruz is going to be way out of their price range.

And Ortiz is on his way to 500+HR barring injury and a HOF induction, yet V-Mart has only hit 30+ HRs once, mostly because of having Miguel Cabrera as protection and getting to pound the AL Central all the time (7 HRs vs. Indians, 5 vs. Twins, 3 vs. White Sox). Otherwise, his numbers are basically pedestrian.

One more thing.. David Ortiz is really important to the Red Sox.. most of their success in the past decade has been when Ortiz has been healthy.. he's been a big part of the 3 World Series titles in Boston. When he's struggled(such as 2010 and 2014) or been hurt, the Sox don't win.

Jason Kipnis is the best. Not only does he reference WAR but he references the "shaky defense" behind Kluber (himself!).

VMart 4/68M?

Que diablos esta pasando?

Good , now we can move on past all the ******** V Mart rumors.

Best hope is to go get a Cuban 2nd baseman and somehow get a decent catcher. Improve the defense and hope , hell Pray for health.

Great news on hearing Kluber winning the Cy Young. He deserved it! I'm a huge King Felix fan though I'm glad the voters got this one right.

Felix could have won it and there wouldn't be much argument. Both deserved it.

Lol that is an amazing athlete tweet.

Andrew Miller wont settle for anything less than 4 years. LMAO

Some sucker of a team is going to give him too much money to be a closer.. and it won't be Boston.

Miller was the best lefty reliever in the AL this year. Guy's going to get PAID.

I like how you guys are so desperate for a player to embrace sabermetrics, that you totally gloss over the fact that he referenced wins.

Actually Adam, the humorous part was that he called out his own team's s***** defense.

The fact that he mentioned Pitcher Wins and Clutchiness was far beside the point.

Cervelli finally escapes New York! Still waiting on the return. Good trade for the Pirates.. Cervelli would be an everyday catcher on most teams anyway except the Yankees, who prefer to pay McCann a ton.. Justin Wilson goes to NY in the deal, BTW.

A blurb on Moncada who had his showcase today .

Two general managers and two other officials familiar with Moncada and Cuban baseball this week all agreed on the expected price once he hits the market: between $30 million and $40 million. While that’s close to what the similarly aged Puig ($42 million) and the Cubs' Jorge Soler ($30 million) received, the circumstances for Moncada are entirely different than when Puig and Soler signed in 2012.

Under baseball’s current collective-bargaining agreement, international free agents under 23 years old with fewer than five years’ experience in a professional league fall under the purview of MLB’s international bonus pool. Meaning for every dollar a team goes beyond its allotted budget to sign international amateurs – the highest this season is Houston with $4.94 million – it must pay a 100 percent tax. On top of that, if a team goes 15 percent beyond its pool, it cannot spend more than $300,000 on an international amateur for the next two signing periods.

The upshot: If a team does indeed give Moncada a $30 million deal, it will cost somewhere in the neighborhood of $60 million. Should the bidding jump to $40 million, Moncada would cost $80 million – more than Abreu, Rusney Castillo, Puig, Cespedes, Soler, Alexander Guerrero, Erisbel Arruebarrena or any of the other Cuban defectors to this point.

Ben Badler after his Tigers prospect chat said he was phoning Guatemala for info so he might have something tomorrow at BA. All 30 teams expected to be at the showcase.

How the hell can you put a price on a player after just one showcase?

According to sources, Jays have a verbal agreement with Guerrero Jr, which takes us out of competition for Moncada.
