Craig Calcterra said it best today...the best thing about the Cespedes throw was that it caused almost all of us to seek out a throw that might be better. It's OF assist porn day

90%of MLB outfielders can make a long toss like that, it's the accuracy of the throw that made it impressive. I've seen Barfield and Evans make throws from that distance, but on more of a line.

Ellis Valentine had the greatest arm I ever remember seeing. In practice he used to put on a show. Similar to Barfield but I don't remember ever seeing either throw one that distance in a game (it's said that no one ran on Valentine). I always say Valentine followed by Barfield and Vlade for best arm...but that's probably my Jays/Expos bias as Parker probably falls somewhere between 1 and 3.

Dwight Evans from the Red Sox also had a serious cannon. Personally, Barfield is the best arm I've ever witnessed.

Once he initially bobbled the ball, did it seem to anyone else as though Cespedes was baiting the runner to come home to try to make it a play at the plate?

The manner in which he keeps looking at the runner and the way he sort of gingerly makes his way to the ball, seemed like it was bait to get the out. But maybe I'm giving him way too much credit.

Here is the history of the longest throw in a horribly written but well researched blog. Nothing to do with throwing anyone out at home...but interesting that no one has attempted to break the record of 445 feet 10 inches since the 50's

I have always felt that an outfielder gunning a runner down at the plate was one of the sweetest plays in baseball . Wish i had saw it live but I have been lucky enough over the years of watching some of the best arms in baseball on my teams do this over the years . Valentine and Vlad on the Expos and Barfield and Bautista on the Jays.

Great as that throw is how about gunning out a runner at first base on consecutive days.

No you haven't.

Temporal distance has a way of making things more grandiose than they really were.

Lol.. Leave it up to you to always attempt to negate people's opinions or what they've actually witnessed. I actually was at a game where Barfield made a throw to third from the right field corner with a lower trajectory than Cespedes' throw on the fly to cut a runner down. Garth Iorg played possum like a throw wasn't coming to get the runner to not slide, nonetheless the throw was jaw dropping. I was sitting in the right field steel bench outfield seats, so I had a fantastic view, something I will never forget. So please spare me the ******** leather couch talk you always bring.

Cards @ Tampa.... 90% of the crowd = Cards fans.

Tampa arguably has the worst fanbase in professional sports.

I think BTS is at the game.

I remember Dave Stieb was ejected arguing balls and strikes, he was about halfway to home plate, he turned around and threw the ball which seemed like a hundred feet past the CF fence, I bet that was close to that record, lol.

Lol.. I was at a game where Willie Upshaw hit a go ahead HR in the bottom of the eighth against the Yanks Dave Righetti. When the home plate umpire threw him a new ball, he turned around and launched it over the right center field wall, and cleared it by a wide margin. I was sitting under the grandstand in left,so i had a perfect view. Everybody was laughing hard and ripping on him, as most people were hammered by that point in the game. So much excitement during those years.

If he was, he'd be cheering the Cards when Friedman wasn't looking. Hell of a catch by Kiermaier, he's a pleasure to watch out there.

Red Sox continue to roll out literally the worst outfield in all of Major League Baseball

Who could they get at the trade deadline?? Surely they'll be looking.

Hope Grichuk gets it going here, his numbers just as good as Oscar, and only 1 year older, but is struggling at the bigs.

Cherington was on the radio stating that Bradley is their CF and while Sizemore hasn't done what they expected they would likely stick with what they have unless they get close and can make a good deal.

I'm really hoping CHP or gruber or someone is going to take this opportunity to post about how you guys are nothing without your advanced metrics.
