Dylan Old-Timey Member Posted December 9, 2013 Posted December 9, 2013 No shame in this. LOL haha that is great.
JaysFan4Ever Verified Member Posted December 9, 2013 Posted December 9, 2013 Watching the video he seemed to choke up a bit a few times and seems upset he's leaving but also loves the fact he's going to be with his family a lot more. Mentioned he has some back issues that have caused him to alter his mechanics which lead to shoulder issues and he just doesn't think he'd be able to pitch too long with it. Very nice of him to sign one day contract to go out as a Jay. How often does that actually happen? http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article/tor/two-time-cy-young-award-winner-roy-halladay-retires?ymd=20131209&content_id=64495310&vkey=news_tor

Dr Negative Verified Member Posted December 9, 2013 Posted December 9, 2013 Halladay is a lock for the HoF.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted December 9, 2013 Posted December 9, 2013 Halladay is a lock for the HoF. And as a Blue Jay instead of a Phillie. Yeah!
Sammy225 Old-Timey Member Posted December 9, 2013 Posted December 9, 2013 I had a little laugh at the Philadelphia reporter who asked why he retired as a Jay and if there was any consideration to Retire a Phillie. He seemed a little butt hurt I think.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted December 9, 2013 Posted December 9, 2013 Anyone got a link to the presser?
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted December 9, 2013 Posted December 9, 2013 Great answer to a (intentionally?) stupid question
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted December 9, 2013 Posted December 9, 2013 Good time to go out. He wasn't going to be but a shadow of his former self and with his back issues, it's for the best. I wasn't quite old enough to remember watching Stieb in his heyday, so Doc is the best Jay pitcher I've ever seen (I don't really count Clemens since he was only here short term). I'd put him in the Hall. Counting stats for todays arms will never measure up to the older generation of guys but I don't hold that against him. One of the best pitchers in baseball for a decade. 2 CY's and 8 all star appearances, a nice peak of dominance in the middle.

jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted December 9, 2013 Posted December 9, 2013 Roy Halladay is a class act and I feel privileged that I was able to watch him all those times in a Blue Jays uniform this past decade. He was in my opinion the best pitcher in baseball this past decade - no argument. 2005 was the best I think I've saw Doc. Its unfortunate that he got injured that season, though he was unstoppable when on the mound. Definitely would have won a Cy Young award that season.
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted December 9, 2013 Posted December 9, 2013 Also interesting to note, this 1 day contract that Doc signs, he will have provided more value than JPA did all of last year.

They should have waited until the season tickets went on sale. Between the time people heard we signed Doc until the time they got to the part about him retiring they probably could have put an addition thousand butts in the seats.

Doc as a player kept to himself and focused on his game, which was absolutely understandable....but the thought of him going to spring training or working with the likes of drabek, hutch, stroman, sanchez, romero...now as a retired player imparting some knowledge...you don't want him to undermine the pitching coaches on the jays....but surely he could supplement some of his knowledge and experience to what the staff is already doing with the players....it seems like a rather exciting proposition having doc back with the jays...

Agreed. If nothing else, helping others out by talking about his work ethic, mental toughness and dedication to competing... very important for all athletes but pitcher's in particular.

Heck, he could lead the pups on his workouts. A retired Doc would probably still make them cry mercy.

At the very least he could pass on his copy of "The Mental Game of Baseball" to Drabek
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted December 9, 2013 Posted December 9, 2013 Sort of the official MLB.com write up by Chisolm. Good read: http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article/tor/two-time-cy-young-award-winner-roy-halladay-retires?ymd=20131209&content_id=64495310&vkey=news_tor
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted December 9, 2013 Posted December 9, 2013 Halladay came up with the idea to retire as a Jay and called the team about it a few weeks ago #AllClass

Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted December 10, 2013 Posted December 10, 2013 Advanced stat guys will hate this stat, but over a course of a career no one can deny that this is elite and something definitely worthy of HOF consideration, especially considering the mediocre teams he was on: W-L 203-105 .659 Winning percentage The only guy better than him that was recent enough for anyone alive to see was Pedro Martinez (ok maybe someone will admit to having seen Whitey Ford pitch) and 17th all-time.

Whether it's "elite" or not it's pretty much meaningless.

Man Pedro probably was the greatest to ever pitch and old ass Lasorda thought he was too small. Hopefully Stroman is a damn good pitcher too.
WestCoastJays Verified Member Posted December 10, 2013 Posted December 10, 2013 Sad to see Roy Halladay retire. I grew up watching him pitch for the Blue Jays for almost a decade.
