Saw this coming from a mile away. I always felt like I couldn't imagine him any uniform other than a Rangers one. Even when he was a Blue Jay, he just always looked like a Ranger to me. I don't know why, some players I just can't picture in any other jersey. Like Ellsbury, no matter how hard I try, I can't imagine him in Pinstripes. Seems awkward as f***.

I actually think Arencibia can provide positive value in Arlington. I'm not going to say he's going to go nuts, but I could see him possibly getting his s*** together and being a 1-2 win player there, with potential for a bit more. Hell, I wouldn't be surprised if he came across the right coach and posted a 4 win season some day.

Happy as f*** that he's gone though.

Lol not just me. I always thought Aaron Hill looked like a Twin.

Going to Texas isnt going to make JP become a much better hitter. Toronto's a notorious hitter's park as well. Its no Yankee Stadium or Coors, but a lot of scrubs have come here and launched 20 out of no where.

I don't get why some people make such a big deal about JP. It almost makes me think they don't even watch the games. The only thing he has going for him is his power. Put any player up there and tell them to hack 90% of their AB's and let's see how many more HR's they hit at the expense of all other stats.

He's pretty much the poster boy for everything that's wrong with pro athletes. Natural athletic body and ability that he likes to rub in everyone's face. Incredibly arrogant, stubborn and doesnt seem the need to improve or take 5 seconds to learn about non-ancient stats that could benefit him in the long run.

It's the Zaun theory and Zaun somewhat amusingly uses it both ways:

He has said both:

1. Anyone can hit 20 HR if they awing for the fences all the time, JPA needs to be more selective and disciplined to help his team more.

2. Ichiro Suziki sacrificed extra base hits and home runs with his slap technique to wimpishly inflate his BA and hit total. He should have hit for higher slugging to help his team more.

In all fairness, Zaun is an idiot. He does call a lot of things as it is, but his insight leaves much to be desired.

Also to be fair, JP and Ichiro have very different makeups. One is built to be a slugger, the other is built to be a contact hitter.

That is what us OLD guys used to say . Compare that to winning teams .

I don't see what OLD has to do with anything. I'm pushing 40 and I love analytics while lots of young fans talk in nothing but clichés like grit and hustle. Framing debates as young versus old just seems like a good way to have a chip on your shoulder.

To be fair though he is not wrong. when there is a runner on 2nd and 2 out you should not be swinging for the fences. You should be smart and try to just put the ball in play. Also I have heard that in batting practice Ichiro has very good power but he is paid to get on base and beat out grounders.

Rangers To Sign J.P. Arencibia

By Steve Adams [December 6 at 11:26am CST]

The Rangers have reached an agreement with free agent catcher J.P. Arencibia, according to Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News (Sulia link). Reports last night indicated that the Rangers were nearing a deal with the CAA Sports client.

Arencibia will presumably back up Geovany Soto in Texas. Arencibia hit just .194/.227/.365 in 2013 and is unlikely to ever hit for much of an average, but with his power, he can be effective if he bats above .215 or so, as he did in 2011 and 2012. He has 62 home runs in the past three seasons, and hitting in Arlington should help him maintain that level of power. Though he has his warts, Arencibia was one of the game's top pitch-framing catchers in 2013 -- an undervalued element of catchers' skill sets.

There is so much wrong with this. How does a gut with such crap performance get so much playing time...

In 1,392 major league plate appearances, Arencibia has compiled a .258 on-base-percentage. Over the last 60 years, it is tied for the 10th lowest among 1,941 non-pitchers to have at least 1,250 plate appearances in a career.

He also has durability, which Rangers general manager Jon Daniels stressed was important in a recent conversation about the backup catcher situation. He said he wanted somebody who could step in and handle the load of playing every day in the event that Geovany Soto gets hurt. Arencibia has averaged 108 starts behind the plate over the last three seasons. He ranks eighth in the majors in starts in that time period.

Damn, the Rangers just picked up an elite pitch framing catcher. Why can't our front office ever look at some advanced stats? But seriously, when do we go troll the Rangers board?

He isn't wrong that JP needs to be a better situational hitter. He is wrong to suggest Ichiro should be hitting more HR's. It's finding the right balance and JP was just never able to figure it out probably because he can't.

Arencibia's thoughts: I'm so good, that a great team like Texas wants me. Once I get a world series ring, I'll be on Buster Posey's level.

So True Guy is a huge ******* but he wants to be the Don Cherry of Baseball .

As for JPA , I hated to just give him away and his fate is a product of stupid Arbitration awards . With 3 options and a 1.5 mil salary which would have been more than fair for his s***** season then the jays could have sent him to AAA till he either recouped some value or died a permanent death . Look at what Navarro did in his fat and lazy seasons . JPA like #'s

Ranger hitting coaches will turn him into just a bad hitter... Better than the historically god awful one he was here.

He'll give this pitching staff fits though. All ex-Jays do. Book it.

Ken, that's not a really fair assessment. Navarro has worked hard to get to this point and JP did nothing but run his mouth right out of town.

Oh is he saying he should or could. I maybe read that wrong. I thought he was saying that Ichiro could hit 20 HRs if did not worry about contact all the time.

Perhaps, in either case, to hard to criticize a player like Ichiro when he was in his prime. Now he is old and pretty much on his way out.
