JaysFan4Ever Verified Member Posted November 3, 2013 Posted November 3, 2013 My apologies if it's been posted already or elsewhere but it's per Rotoworld via ESPNNewYork.com: http://www.rotoworld.com/player/mlb/5630/greg-burke The obvious question is WHY? They have a fair number of relievers even if a trade is made. If they do flip a few of them why would they think about replacing them with someone like him? I can see if it's a minor league deal, which wouldn't be a bad idea, but not a major league deal.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted November 3, 2013 Posted November 3, 2013 AA loves relievers who throw Sinkers. Simple as that.

GD Old-Timey Member Posted November 3, 2013 Posted November 3, 2013 Who cares? Can't really hurt, and maybe this is a precursor to trading a bullpen arm
Frenchsoup Verified Member Posted November 3, 2013 Posted November 3, 2013 You have to give AA cradit for finding good relievers, it's the one thing he's good at. Delabar,Santos,Jeffress,Wagner,Juan, he was also in on Grilli when everyone was like wtf?
GD Old-Timey Member Posted November 3, 2013 Posted November 3, 2013 You have to give AA cradit for finding good relievers, it's the one thing he's good at. Thing is, he gives up Mike f***ing Aviles and Yan f***ing Gomes to do it.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted November 3, 2013 Posted November 3, 2013 Who cares? Can't really hurt, and maybe this is a precursor to trading a bullpen arm My thoughts too, initially But wow his stats are atrocious
GD Old-Timey Member Posted November 3, 2013 Posted November 3, 2013 My thoughts too, initially But wow his stats are atrocious 3.95 xFIP and put up a .364 BABIP, Steamer projects a 3.74 ERA Um is AA actually maybe almost making a smart move?
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted November 3, 2013 Posted November 3, 2013 3.95 xFIP and put up a .364 BABIP, Steamer projects a 3.74 ERA Um is AA actually maybe almost making a smart move? How is his FIP that decent when he walks almost 5 batters per 9??
GD Old-Timey Member Posted November 3, 2013 Posted November 3, 2013 How is his FIP that decent when he walks almost 5 batters per 9?? Because he strikes out a good deal of batters and doesn't give up many homers. If he walked fewer batters, he'd be very good. 3.84 SIERA also supports some positive regression incoming. If we traded Janssen for something real nice, let Santos close or Delabar or whoever, and signed Burke, I would not mind that.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted November 3, 2013 Posted November 3, 2013 Keep in mind the sample you're analyzing is only 31.2 innings. And a 3.84 ERA is very mediocre these days anyway. K-Rod will come really cheap again, I'd much rather go after him as a Janssen replacement. Yeah, he's mediocre, but he probably won't even cost a million and he's just a reliever. Define cheap on K-Rod, cause I figure some team will give him a few mil.
kgm1 Verified Member Posted November 3, 2013 Posted November 3, 2013 WE have 19 possible f***ing relievers on the 40 man or in the system . We need to trade some or lose them to waivers as too many are out of options . I want a catcher and starter . There should be zero money spent on the Bull pen .
GD Old-Timey Member Posted November 3, 2013 Posted November 3, 2013 $900k for one year? That's all you think he'd get? Cause damn that would be nice.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted November 3, 2013 Posted November 3, 2013 Yes, because of his bad clubhouse rep. Last year he didn't even sign until April 17! But he's still a decent reliever. 79 xFIP-, sign me up. Dayum.

Trade overperforming or expensive relievers for stuff we REALLY need.
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted November 3, 2013 Posted November 3, 2013 $900k for one year? I think K-Rod can get more than 900 K on the open market. He pitched well last season and I'm sure he gets something around $2-3 million on a one-year deal.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted November 3, 2013 Posted November 3, 2013 Also with Burke...last 3 years between the minors and major against RH hitters: 128.2 IP 34 BB 133 K's He's a righty specialist, he's kind of a bullpen version of Todd Redmond. Of course it would be just as easy to make Redmond a bullpen version of Todd Redmond

jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted November 3, 2013 Posted November 3, 2013 That's gonna be a bit hard to do when Redmond is our #3 next year If Redmond is the Jays No. 3 starter next season on Opening Day, just wave the white flag.

Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted November 4, 2013 Posted November 4, 2013 The Jays are 15th in reliever WAR since AA took over (also 27th in FIP, 18th in xFIP). There's nothing special about his bullpen track record. To that I referred. AA hasn't done a good job with the bullpen.
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted November 4, 2013 Posted November 4, 2013 Not sure I understand the negative reaction to this. If AA is looking at under the radar guys to add to the bullpen that can only be a good sign, a sign that some of the pitchers at the front end will be moved to address greater needs. And no he's not a replacement for Janssen but that's not the idea. The idea is that you move everyone up and this guy slots in at the back-end. And since this guy has been outrighted, it's my understanding that he will only cost money which means that AA might actually be acquiring relievers the normal way instead of throwing away his positional depth (just because it worked for Delabar doesn't mean it's the right approach as Esmil Rogers beautifully illustrated).

Silver lining - Save a few dollars The bad - Fill the 40-man roster with replacement level players.

Delabar was a gift of God. Thames wasn't a "positional depth", he's not a good ballplayer.
