leaffie Verified Member Posted October 8, 2013 Posted October 8, 2013 Beltran will be a free agent this off season, and is looking to come to the AL as a DH to lengthen his career. No doubt he will be offered a QO, so here is the question. The Jays have a protected pick, so if they signed him, where does the compensation pick come from for the Cardinals? He would certainly look good as the DH.
z3r0s Old-Timey Member Posted October 8, 2013 Posted October 8, 2013 Is it a guarantee that he gets a qualifying offer? It wouldn't surprise me if he did, but it also wouldn't if the cards didn't want to risk him accepting. He would be getting a raise in pay and his a liability in the field with no DH spot available.

Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted October 8, 2013 Posted October 8, 2013 The Jays would lose their second round pick and the Cardinals would get a pick in the compensation round after the first and prior to the second.
GNick Verified Member Posted October 8, 2013 Posted October 8, 2013 I don't think DH and losing a draft pick is a priority right now. Money should be spent on either a catcher or starting pitcher
The Cats Ass Old-Timey Member Posted October 8, 2013 Posted October 8, 2013 I would think he'd cost around the same as McCann. And I'd rather have an upgrade at catcher then DH. We have Lind and EE to share DH.
leaffie Verified Member Posted October 8, 2013 Author Posted October 8, 2013 thank you. Didn't quite know how that would work.

ESPN insider seems to think so.

Beltran has already been linked to Toronto. He has friends on the club. I wouldn't put too much into his not coming here his last free agency go around.

Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted October 9, 2013 Posted October 9, 2013 The way this team wastes 1st rounders, who gives a s*** about giving up a comp pick?
The Cats Ass Old-Timey Member Posted October 9, 2013 Posted October 9, 2013 What do you consider a waste of a first rounder? Deck McGuire is the only recient one I can think of.
The Cats Ass Old-Timey Member Posted October 9, 2013 Posted October 9, 2013 If you include comp picks, then Woj, Anderson, Musgrove, Comer, Gonzales all look like wastes. Not every prospect turns out. But those I'd probably consider a waste more because they were trade for JackAss Happ, which was a waste..
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted October 9, 2013 Posted October 9, 2013 What do you consider a waste of a first rounder? Deck McGuire is the only recient one I can think of. what? Jake Anderson bust Comer (one million or 2) bust Wocj = Jon Rauch
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted October 9, 2013 Posted October 9, 2013 Are you serious? Beede and Bickford ringing any bells? A deferred pick is a year of development down the drain. Jenkins and Deck were just embarassing busts, needless to say. We passed on Wong, Guerrieri and Stephenson on the Beede pick alone. You don't even want to look up the littany of good prospects we snubbed for org guy Deck.
The Cats Ass Old-Timey Member Posted October 9, 2013 Posted October 9, 2013 what? Jake Anderson bust Comer (one million or 2) bust Wocj = Jon Rauch Jake Anderson - How many other players in that draft year were a bust? Comer - 20 yr old in A ball, with a SO per innings, little early to call him a bust ain't it... Wocj - He's not as big and scary as Jon Rauch, so no.

You don't even want to look up the littany of good prospects we snubbed for org guy Deck. The guy we got with the Beede comp pick will reach the Majors before Beede. And either of them could end up the better player. What's a year in player development worth anyway? Not a whole lot. Deck is an embarrising bust, considering where he was picked at. Jenkins, not so much, we had the 20th pick that year. 4 out of the next 6 players picked after him are even worse then him, and might not even make the show. That wasn't a very good draft year.
The Cats Ass Old-Timey Member Posted October 9, 2013 Posted October 9, 2013 Trout, Nicky Castellanos, Chris Sale, Yelich, Biddle? You may as well add Gerrit Cole, Jordan Zimmermann, Stanton, Freeman to that list too.
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted October 9, 2013 Posted October 9, 2013 We passed on Wong, Guerrieri and Stephenson on the Beede pick alone. If Stroman doesn't get a 50 game suspension, is he really that far behind those guys in his development?
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted October 9, 2013 Posted October 9, 2013 Trout, Nicky Castellanos, Chris Sale, Yelich, Biddle? Taijuan, Olt, etc etc etc
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted October 9, 2013 Posted October 9, 2013 Taijuan, Olt, etc etc etc Nice pic.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted October 9, 2013 Posted October 9, 2013 We "hit" with Syndergaard it looks like (he's just not here anymore but have to give credit to the drafting). Stroman, Sanchez and Nicolino were all good picks as well. Ryan Goins. /thread
