Carlos Beltran - compensation pick

Beltran will be a free agent this off season, and is looking to come to the AL as a DH to lengthen his career. No doubt he will be offered a QO, so here is the question. The Jays have a protected pick, so if they signed him, where does the compensation pick come from for the Cardinals?

 

He would certainly look good as the DH.

Is it a guarantee that he gets a qualifying offer? It wouldn't surprise me if he did, but it also wouldn't if the cards didn't want to risk him accepting. He would be getting a raise in pay and his a liability in the field with no DH spot available.

I would think he'd cost around the same as McCann. And I'd rather have an upgrade at catcher then DH. We have Lind and EE to share DH.

While I agree those are the priorities, sometimes you have to improve the team where you can.

While I agree those are the priorities, sometimes you have to improve the team where you can.

 

You could just sign loney and move Edwin to DH or do some sort of melky platoon LF/DH

Beltran has already been linked to Toronto. He has friends on the club. I wouldn't put too much into his not coming here his last free agency go around.

If you include comp picks, then Woj, Anderson, Musgrove, Comer, Gonzales all look like wastes.

 

Not every prospect turns out. But those I'd probably consider a waste more because they were trade for JackAss Happ, which was a waste..

Comer - 20 yr old in A ball, with a SO per innings, little early to call him a bust ain't it...

The guy we got with the Beede comp pick will reach the Majors before Beede. And either of them could end up the better player. What's a year in player development worth anyway? Not a whole lot.

 

Deck is an embarrising bust, considering where he was picked at. Jenkins, not so much, we had the 20th pick that year. 4 out of the next 6 players picked after him are even worse then him, and might not even make the show. That wasn't a very good draft year.

We "hit" with Syndergaard it looks like (he's just not here anymore but have to give credit to the drafting). Stroman, Sanchez and Nicolino were all good picks as well.
