JugglingPitches Verified Member Posted October 8, 2013 Posted October 8, 2013 The Jays are owned by Rogers. Sportsnet = Rogers. Blue Jays = main content on Sportsnet and exclusive to the network. Rogers also owns Rogers Center. Rogers Center is primarily used to house the Blue Jays. Rogers has invested significant money on upgrades to the stadium and are in the process of getting real grass for the Blue Jays by 2018 and are kicking the Argos out by that year, so the Blue Jays can get said real grass. The Jays are in zero danger of relocating.
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted October 8, 2013 Posted October 8, 2013 Bunting isn't learned over the course of one year. It's a craft learned prior to being a pro' and needs to be constantly worked on and refined into pro' ball. And trying to teach a bunch of vets who were never taught to bunt, isn't gonna go over well. True, but I'd still expect to see some improvement (at least in technique) considering how bad they were at it. Also, CM had been working with some of the guys in the minors for a few years, so I think some of it is fair to pin on him. That's about the only bad thing I can say about him though, and I was surprised and disappointed when I saw the headlines yesterday. I still think there's more to this.
admin Site Manager Posted October 8, 2013 Posted October 8, 2013 f*** this team. What a joke. I have zero expectations for this team next year.
baconpancakes Verified Member Posted October 8, 2013 Posted October 8, 2013 I don't agree with the slagging of Gibbons part of your post. I like Gibbons. But I agree that Butter also would of been a good choice. (this was in reply to someone who said Gibbons sucks and the loss of Butters was huge... I agree with the Butters part...) If this was in reply to me, I guess my rage over everything leads me to my dislike of gibs. I never used to be this way, he seemed to be a down-to-earth players coach. But as you watch other teams and other coaches, Gibbons watches the game unfold in front of him while someone like Maddon helps direct the game and control things. If a player isnt playing well, not much a coach can do, but gibbons just seems to have fallen asleep since he came back. I think he thought he was walking right into a playoff race, hell we all did, and then got the wind knocked out of him with what happened.
baconpancakes Verified Member Posted October 8, 2013 Posted October 8, 2013 Good points But are we supposed to believe this was NOT posted by Olerud363?? not sure why you think I am Olerud363, I am not. I just don't post often, but when s*** like this comes raining down (the absurdity firing) i just throw my arms up and wonder what is coming next? maybe a nice contract extension for JP Istrikeoutalot.

baconpancakes Verified Member Posted October 8, 2013 Posted October 8, 2013 What team(s) do you plan on following? You ever watch an Angels game? Scioscia's always been at the rail as well. Long ago was considered one of the leagues best managers. Now, either gone stale or just not liked even close to what he was. I agree about Scioscia, but wow, gibbons looks like he needs a kick every few pitches to keep his eyes open. He doesnt look like he cares one bit about any of this anymore. Even Butter is clapping and jumping when he is standing in the dugout. I HATE boston but Gib wouldnt last two seconds there. Look the damn part. Remember yunel that lazy ass(who didn't run out his double play last night either), and Rios. They looked lazy, and still do, and we all bitched about it. I would rather have someone who tried, or FFS look like that even give one s*** about their team. When Fer was here, he didn't jump up and down, but he looked like he was at least paying attention. Sorry for this thread derail. The direction of this team boggles the mind.
The_DH Verified Member Posted October 8, 2013 Posted October 8, 2013 Gibbons was in double a and didn't expect a serious role. He's not a manager. The managers job is to set the tone. Scioscia did that. He learned from Tommy Lasorda who was known to bit engaged. You know maybe that's what I like about Goins. He dives for balls, he really goes for it. That's character.
JugglingPitches Verified Member Posted October 8, 2013 Posted October 8, 2013 Listen, when you can't land a job in MLB...can't land a job in AAA...land a job in AA and call it your "dream situation"...you probably aren't a major league calibre manager. Out of all the options AA could have hired, Gibbons wasn't even on the chart...he was beneath the chart in "this is so stupid we won't even bring it up" territory. He seems like a nice guy, might even be a decent bench coach, but he is not a manager and it seems like AA is gonna die with him in the dugout. I think AA is stuck now...if he fires him he's admitting to a huge mistake and he'd be toast too. So, I'd say Gibbons is safe until AA is gone.
kgm1 Verified Member Posted October 8, 2013 Posted October 8, 2013 Their are a lot of reasons what went wrong and i had a post about it . I personally can't fault the coaching staff other than Rivera . I knew there would be changes but i expected murph and Rivera to go. I think Gibbons did what he could with that rotation . Pretty hard to win games when starters only get thru 3 to 5 innnings. The last person I thought would go was Mottola . Only thing it could be is he never got along with the rest of the coaching staff and AA blamed him for the Bonifacio ugliness. Lets face it Boni was Aa,s guy and he hit in KC
Howard Roark Verified Member Posted October 8, 2013 Posted October 8, 2013 3rd largest population market, correct? It's a shame the fans and owners don't act like it. Mmm hmm, only New York and Los Angeles metro census areas have higher population, we overtook the Chicagoland region a few years back. It cracks me up when people moot the idea of this team relocating. I mean, in a league where the likes of Cleveland, Cincinnatti and Milwaukee kept their teams through hard times? Sheeeit........
The_DH Verified Member Posted October 8, 2013 Posted October 8, 2013 Yeah but the amount of fans per capita is probably lowest in Toronto.
BlueJayWay Verified Member Posted October 8, 2013 Posted October 8, 2013 Yeah but the amount of fans per capita is probably lowest in Toronto. Yeah but that's offset by the huge population of Toronto, and southern Ontario generally. There are more than enough fans to make this a large market team, since it's the only team in the country.
BlueJayWay Verified Member Posted October 8, 2013 Posted October 8, 2013 Brooklyn. More media love/exposure, more money, better location, better fans. I assume the Mets and Yankees would veto that.
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted October 8, 2013 Posted October 8, 2013 .......and we're idiots Interesting. I guess I'll reserve full judgement until we see who they bring in, but I'm still leaning towards not liking the move. My suspicion is one of the new coaches might be Alomar.
frizzer1 Verified Member Posted October 8, 2013 Posted October 8, 2013 Can someone tell me what Mottola did wrong and Walker did right?
bronson44 Verified Member Posted October 8, 2013 Posted October 8, 2013 Murphy gets to retire knowing he cost a young coach his job. Who doesn't have that dream?
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted October 8, 2013 Posted October 8, 2013 He did nothing wrong. Murphy and Mottola were a team yo. Murphy retired so Mottola got fired...makes sense? Mottola and Murphy were like the ying yang. Two different philosophies.

Look the damn part. Some people are wired different. And just because these guys are in the public eye, doesn't mean they should cave into the public's idea of what they want them to be. I remember Delgado getting hammered publicly about not being a raw-raw team leader. Well that wasn't his personality and he sure as f*** wasn't gonna change for the fans or his teammates. "Remember yunel that lazy ass(who didn't run out his double play last night either), and Rios. They looked lazy, and still do, and we all bitched about it." Yep, we all bitched about it. But there comes a point where talent + lazy, intersects with talent and tries hard all the time. And until the guy that tries hard all the time surpasses the guy who is lazy, I'll take lazy all day long.

GeorgiaPeach Verified Member Posted October 8, 2013 Posted October 8, 2013 Pretty hard to win games when starters only get thru 3 to 5 innnings. I couldn't understand why the starters weren't left in games longer to eat innings even if they were getting their brains beat in. Alex shorted the bench for most of the year instead of forcing vet pitchers to pitch through problems. I f***ing hated the babying he did with the pitching staff, all the while watching Melky hobble around in the OF and causing Gose to become disenchanted in the minors watching s*** RP's and SP's getting the call, all the while the guy ahead of him was injured. The last person I thought would go was Mottola . Only thing it could be is he never got along with the rest of the coaching staff and AA blamed him for the Bonifacio ugliness. The_DH Verified Member Posted October 8, 2013 Posted October 8, 2013 John Tortorella may be one of the most engaged coaches in hockey, but by no means does that make him one of the best. That dude is just nuts.

There are more than enough fans to make this a large market team, since it's the only team in the country. Maybe those so-called fans should learn something about the sport or team. Just because there's a massive amount of people to go to games doesn't mean they count as fans. And if we're a large market IYO why hasn't the money been spent like we're a large market team? Over the long haul and looking at all 30 teams, the Jays are jockeying around 10th-12th for overall market size IMO. And fan interest and knowledge counts in my books.
GeorgiaPeach Verified Member Posted October 8, 2013 Posted October 8, 2013 I assume the Mets and Yankees would veto that. So when the Selig's, Bettman's, Stern's or Gooddel's say they're advised to do what's best for the league, its really a lie? I know the Yankee & Mets owner would want it veto'd but I can't see how any other market like Portland, Montreal or Charlotte make sense. I've heard some baseball people from NC, give numerous valid reasons why Charlotte won't fly. Montreal is a worse situation than the Jays. The thing with the New York situation is, its a really divided city. Most Mets fans live in Queens, most Yankee fans the Bronx & Manhatten. I'm pretty sure Brooklyn would have its own niche of fans.

Toronto has to be the city with the smallest baseball IQ. I remember people suggesting Joe Carter should play 3b in the world series days. The suggestion was how hard can it be.

It doesn't matter if they don't attain your own arbitrary definition of fan. And if we're a large market IYO why hasn't the money been spent like we're a large market team? That's finally starting now, but that's why people have been upset with Rogers.
GeorgiaPeach Verified Member Posted October 9, 2013 Posted October 9, 2013 Their dollars count just as much as anyone. It doesn't matter if they don't attain your own arbitrary definition of fan. Where were their dollars in the mid-late 90's? A real baseball fan doesn't stop being a fan. That's finally starting now, but that's why people have been upset with Rogers. The Jays big money comes and goes. Big market money sticks around for a bit, its not cyclical in small windows of contention.
