I'd have no issue with Gose being our starting CF (in a platoon as he shouldn't face lefties) but not moving Rasmus to LF to do it. If Rasmus had huge trade value (at this point I don't think he's got as much trade value as real value so it's most likely a moot point) then you deal him, and go with the strong D, light hitting CF.

Not to mention the only way that Melky isn't the LF next year is if he's not healthy enough to do so.

I hope the Jays don't trade Rasmus (he's a very valuable piece as we all have seen this year). And it's not like his trade value is through the roof amongst the other teams in the league. Blue Jays are better off holding onto him, since over a full season he could be worth 5 WAR. He's basically a similar player to Adam Jones if you come to think of it.

Saying he's declining hard is a hyperbole. His bat is essentially the same as last year (139 wRC+ to 133) while his OF defense has improved. 3 DRS to 4 and 2.0 UZR/150 to 7.7. That's not a defensive decline.

I still think Bautista is a great player, though he isn't the same player he was in 2010 and 2011. He's starting to decline offensively as I think moving forward he's more of a .250/.360/.500 hitter with a 35 HR ceiling. And that's if he stays healthy and plays 140-150 games. He's still a great player, though he is no longer one of the top players in the game as he was in 2010 and 2011. He's going to be 34 next season.

I'm quite sure that's the point JFAS was trying to make, that line you put up is the benchmark of how much of that decline is "significant."

I'd rather see Gose in 2014 as the 4th outfielder, replacing Davis essentially. Davis will likely want a 2 year deal worth $4-$5 million/per season and I'm sure they'll be a team out there who needs a CF will sign him for about that and promise him 400-500 AB.

Kinda like what happened with Zaun, Fasano & Villanueva......"yeah, yeah....you'll be playing the position or where you want."

How many "great" players are in baseball right now?

I'd prefer a player I expect to do something opposed to someone who you pretty much throw your hands up every game and wonder what's coming.

That pretty much applies to both of them. Neither is consistent offensively but they get a huge boost in value from playing CF.

Adam Jones has a better hit tool, though he's not a complete player offensively any stretch of the means. Sure he's hitting .295 though his .OBP at .325 is awful. His BB% is worse than JPA. In terms of overall production, there isn't much of a difference between Rasmus and Jones as we have seen this season. Jones offensive #'s might look sexier due to the batting average, and the RBI opportunities he has had. Other than that, Rasmus is a very similar player.

There are a lot of great players that could offer similar production to Jose right now. His contract is very team friendly which is a plus at least, since I'm sure a bat like Jose with his pedigree might demand Jayson Werth money (not contract length) if he were a free agent. I doubt the Blue Jays trade him, though I hope we don't see Bautista kept around in a Jays uniform after 2015.

Similar if Colby's playing at his absolute best and Jones is just playing?

Their production has been very similar this season. Jones is nothing special - sure he's hitting .295 though his .OBP is only .325 and he has a BB % of 3.3 which is worse than JPA. Rasmus could hit around 25 HR's per season and likely post a similar .OPS over a full season (he was on pace doing that this year). Jones' numbers look sexier because of the BA and the RBI totals he has, though overall they are similar players and there's not a drastic difference between the two in my opinion. Around baseball and in the media, Rasmus is vastly undervalued in comparison to the love Adam Jones gets.

On my phone, what are Jones and Rasmus' wOBA's?

This year practically the same, 358 for Jones and 354 for Rasmus. Career Jones is 340 and Rasmus is 325. The big difference between the two is that Rasmus has two sub 300 wOBA seasons out of the past three. That's probably what Gibbers was getting at when he talked about their consistency. Both are very streaky hitters in-season but season to season, Jones's numbers have averaged out more consistently. That's probably a big reason why Rasmus doesn't have much trade value. Any eagerness to trade him after his one good Toronto season will be seen with a suspicious eye by any potential trading partner. Teams will prefer to see how he finishes his Toronto career and open the purse strings if he still looks good when he hits free agency.

Well if we're throwing crap out there.. Jacoby in CF, Rasmus to LF woukd be pretty sexy;)

Maybe Jays can break the bank a bit. Imagaine JE and Reyes 1-2.

If they aren't trying to extend Rasmus this year I hope they are at least talking to teams. If the team has another non-competitive season next season and Colby won't negotiate...you have to know what you might be looking at for him.

I fully expect a Rasmus extension this off season and it's the right thing to do.

Seeing as we have nothing coming from the farm. And Rasmus' trade value is less than desirable, its the logical thing to do.

I really think we should start Gose in CF and move Rasmus to left. Or maybe do a 3-way platoon with those two and Pillar between the 2 positions. I think that if Gose is given regular playing time he will be a valuable MLB player with his D and speed. He doesn't need to hit much at all to have a very positive contribution. I also think he will respond much better playing in the MLB than being sent to AAA again. I think his confidence plays a big role in his performance, as we've seen a bit this year. He's still young and working with CM is a good thing.

This fills the hole in LF and then we can spend our money/assets on C, DH, SP or maybe 2B (See Goins thread lol). I don't think we have that much money to spend and I really don't want to ravish the farm again and I think this is the easiest position to fill in-house.

Needs to cut down on strikeouts...4-1 k/BB ratio

Nope. One 3/4 good season is not enough, AA should only consider signing him to an extension if he continues to prove himself into next season.

He's going to get a fat raise in arbitration this off season and I don't think AA has ever let that happen.

I'm suggesting extending him for 3-4 years at an annual average value less than he projects to get on 1 year arb deal. And I think Colby would take it. Guys like him (year to year contract, every season feels make or break) probably value the job security.

I agree. If Rasmus is on the team I'd keep him in CF.

I do think there is a small chance Melky is the starting DH next year though.

Well I didn't say I like it but if Lind is no longer with the team and they want to play Gose in LF they could slide Melky to DH.

I think Melky and Bautista should take turns at DH next year if Gose is with us.

Agree. But mostly Melky.

In order to afford upgrades at catcher and SP we need some savings AND more cash from Rogers.

Buying Lind out this October saves 7M for next year. Letting Rajai walk saves another maybe 3-4M.

Melky has bad range and the supposed plus arm was never seen this year. He may be best suited to spending 80-90% of his time at DH. That's not good value for a guy at 8M but we're stuck paying that. And a year with less field time might help his back and legs a lot. That might help his hitting too actually.

Posted
Buying out Lind only saves 5M, they should pick up his option and then trade him for whatever they can.

Only saves 5M net, yes. But 2M on the books for this year and saves 7M off total payroll for next year. GM accounting trick.
