Anemic0ffense Verified Member Posted August 30, 2013 Posted August 30, 2013 Lawrie's turn around is probably the only thing we've had to get excited about all year... I hope this new stance is what he needed to become an all star
Anemic0ffense Verified Member Posted August 30, 2013 Posted August 30, 2013 Completely believe in the glove and appreciate how valuable he'll be but just don't believe he'll ever be a consistent bat. He still can't hit anything but fastballs, part of his recent success is changes to the approach and stance, but it's partially that he's getting more fastballs as well. Are there stats out there that say he's gotten more fastballs? Also, why would pitchers change their approach on him, if he never really hit the breaking stuff before?
ByronBlaze Verified Member Posted August 30, 2013 Posted August 30, 2013 I'll be shocked if he gets even a decent amount of consideration for it. Very good career though He already has 65 WAR and looks to have a few good years left at least. Could reach 3000 hits and 450 home runs. Amazing glove reputation and the counting numbers look good for him making it.
Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted August 30, 2013 Posted August 30, 2013 I think it was 3 misplays in one game. I remember watching it. It's pretty easy for anecdotal stuff like that to sway our opinions about baseball. To add an example I'm sure a lot of us can remember Mike Trout's awful defensive games (it might have extended throughout the series) last season in his first games in Rogers Centre where at one point he even had a ball bounce right over him; everyone has bad games. I really like how they praise Lawrie's defense, while I know many people think highly of his play at 3rd, I think it often gets understated how good Brett actually plays the position. It's great that once again he's looking to be the young stud we all saw and hoped for way back when he was tearing up the minors and then his short stint in 2011.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted August 30, 2013 Posted August 30, 2013 That's because it is, bar none the best fielder I've ever seen with the leather and the smarts, there's just way too many times I was left picking my jaw up off the floor. Omar was pretty incredible back in the day too
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted August 30, 2013 Posted August 30, 2013 Yep, Beltre's in for sure. He's already a borderline case and isn't slowing down at all (in fact, continues to get better). With three more solid-to-good years he'll have all the counting stats. Lawrie's having a really encouraging season, which is amazing considering how recently it seemed like 2013 would be a lost year. If he can keep following a normal aging curve he'll turn into an impact player. And the tools are there to believe that improvement is coming. Pablo Peguero and the Dodgers cheated the system to sign Adrian Beltre by adding one more year to his birth date. 17 - A, +A = .284/.366/.519, 26 HR, 99 Ribeyes 18 - +A = .317/.407/.561, 26 HR, 104 Ribeyes HOF for sure
SAAviour Verified Member Posted August 30, 2013 Posted August 30, 2013 I was a teenager watching Robbie Alomar, the guy was a f***ing defensive genius. Haven't seen a second basemen even close since. He had range and was silky smooth, even his relays home were perfect without any wasted movement or time. If we could throw him on this team in his prime there wouldn't need to be another addition, I could even live with JP behind the plate. As for lawrie, he so much easier to put up with when he is good! Please keep it up next year...

The Cats Ass Old-Timey Member Posted August 30, 2013 Posted August 30, 2013 His numbers would have been even better if he wasn't in Seattle for 5 years of his prime.
JohnnyLonghorn Verified Member Posted August 31, 2013 Posted August 31, 2013 Defensively Lawrie is elite no doubt, but overall I wouldn't say he is on the same level as Cabrera/ Longoria/ Beltre/ Wright/ Machado / Carpenter. At least not yet anyways.
GNick Verified Member Posted August 31, 2013 Posted August 31, 2013 Also, he's got a career 110 wRC+ through 247 games now, with 16.3% K rate. Per 162: 20/17, 4.2 WAR. Not bad for a 23 year old. If he can stay healthy will be Lawrie's challenge. McGowan once had better stuff than Halladay but injuries cut him down.

Yep. In recent interviews Lawrie has talked about the importance to him of becoming a "162 game" player. Don't know if I can see that but if he becomes less reckless and stays in great shape hopefully he at least can avoid seasons with 2-3 long DL stints.
GeorgiaPeach Verified Member Posted August 31, 2013 Posted August 31, 2013 I'll be shocked if he gets even a decent amount of consideration for it. Very good career though I was thinking the same thing, but upon further inspection he's a shoe-in.
GeorgiaPeach Verified Member Posted August 31, 2013 Posted August 31, 2013 If you watched a lot of Rays games you'd be whistling a different tune. Longo might not have the flash that Lawrie or Machado have, but he's so f***ing steady at the corner that it's practically emasculating. I won't crucify you if you want to put Lawrie on their level though. He's a defensive stud, no doubt. Longoria's kinda like Ripken. The positioning and steadiness of making plays is underappreciated. Plus playing in Tampa doesn't help for the recognition he should be getting.
GeorgiaPeach Verified Member Posted August 31, 2013 Posted August 31, 2013 Anyone remember late last season when Longoria made 3 errors or something in one series against the Jays? Maybe that series alone has swayed my opinion, either way your right, I don't watch enough Rays games to say for certain. It's like me saying I remember some starts where Halladay got his brains beat in while with us....definitely not the best SP in baseball at that time.

Not a fair comparison IMO. Elite starters have bad games, elite defenders don't make three errors in one game. Show me an example of another elite defender who's made three errors in the same game.

One of the greatest good to bad to good performances ever. http://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/SFN/SFN198609140.shtml Take a look at the 4th inning for the Braves and then Brenly's AB's.
