GD Old-Timey Member Posted August 29, 2013 Posted August 29, 2013 For 30 seconds I thought you were a f***ing idiot because I initially thought of Bobby Abreu. How was it not plainly obvious I was talking about the best Abreu in the world? Tony Abreu of course.

Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted August 29, 2013 Posted August 29, 2013 (edited) Really quick, here are some moves to fix the lineup and defense: -Sign Infante (plus defender and not bad with the bat at all) -Sign Baker (platoons with Gose in LF and provides depth at 1B and 3B too) -Sign Clint Barmes (metrics say he is every bit as good as Brendan Ryan and he's better with the bat) -Trade Loup for Martin Maldonado (subpar bat but plus defender and excellent pitch framer, he's also not older than dirt like Molina) -Pick up Lind's option, throw in 2 million (he costs that much to buyout anyway), and trade him for the best prospect we can get -Dump one of Maicer or DeRosa (can't afford to waste two bench spots, Izturis would require eating salary) LINEUP 1. SS Reyes (S) 2. RF Bautista 3. CF Rasmus (L) 4. 1B Encarnacion 5. 3B Lawrie 6. DH Melky (S) 7. 2B Infante 8. C Maldonado 9. LF Gose/Baker (L/R) *move Baker up against lefties BENCH C-Thole (L) UT-Baker SS-Barmes UT-Pick your poison, DeRosa or Izturis (S) The defense takes a big step forward here as Infante, Maldonado, and Gose are given everyday roles over the rotating junk at 2B, JPA, and Melky. Barmes is a huge upgrade off the bench over the likes of Maicer, Kawasaki, Boni, etc. It's not all defensive additions, however, as Infante can hit and Baker can hit LHP. I'll get to the rotation/bullpen later but the rotation will be better even if no moves are made (although I fully expect some to be made). Edited August 29, 2013 by Terminator
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted August 29, 2013 Posted August 29, 2013 Here's my current offseason plan: Sign McCann, Halladay, Garza, and re-sign Davis. Trade or otherwise get rid of JPA, Morrow, Lind, Happ, Rogers, Lincoln, Izzy. Trade for Dozier or Wong if possible, otherwise perhaps Ackley or Infante. C: McCann (14M) 1B: Edwin (9M) 2B: Dozier / Wong (500k), or Ackley (1.7M) 3B: Lawrie (500k) SS: Reyes (16M) LF: Rasmus (7M) CF: Gose (500k) RF: Bautista (14M) DH: Melky (8M) Bench: Thole, Kawasaki, Davis, DeRosa (combined 5.75M) SP: Halladay (10M) (if he comes back healthy, and early signs are encouraging) SP: Dickey (12M) SP: Buehrle (18M) SP: Garza (12M) SP: Fill from within (Romero, Drabek, Hutch, Jenkins, Stroman, Nolin, etc) RP: Janssen (4M) RP: Delabar (500k) RP: Cecil (2M) RP: McGowan (1.5M) RP: Santos (3.75M) RP: Loup (500k) RP: Wagner (500k) Other: Romero: 7.5M Total of about 138M (139M if Ackley) Minor league starting depth in Stroman, Drabek, Hutch, Jenkins, Romero, Nolin, Redmond, etc Minor league position depth in Pillar, Goins, Jiminez, Sierra, etc The signing of Halladay would boost ticket sales again big time, and McCann and Garza are bigger names that would get people excited as well (not to mention how absolutely perfect a fit McCann is).
KSaw Verified Member Posted August 29, 2013 Author Posted August 29, 2013 I think that you'll find that Garza gets at least $15 million/ year.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted August 29, 2013 Posted August 29, 2013 KSaw: I'll go first using a few thoughts I added to other threads. Please add your own ideas but without adding a gazillion dollars in spending. - Pick up Lind's option - Trade Lind and $500k to Pittsburgh for Nick Kingham Sounds good - Trade Drabek and Arencibia to Arizona for Chris Owings No chance we can do better? Prob not... Just glad JPA is gone - Sign Carlos Beltran (2-year/ $24MM + $12MM option/ $2.5MM buyout) No. He won't come play here, might as well forget it. Plus I'm good with Melky and Rajai for one more year while the kids develop. - Sign Carlos Ruiz (3-year/ $22MM) Yes, definitely. Probably the best catcher we can actually get. The true elites (Yadi, Posey, Mauer) aren't leaving their teams any time soon - Qualify and sign Josh Johnson Qualify yes. Not sure if I hope he accepts or not. - Pick up DeRosa's option OK - Sign Jonathan Sanchez to minor league deal - Sign Freddy Sanchez to minor league deal Good depth but we may already have enough in the rehabbing guys. No, wait, you can never have enough. Go ahead. - Sign Gavin Floyd (1-year: $6.5 MM + 2 vested options at $11.5 MM based on 180 IP/ year) Here's where I think we should aim higher. We probably don't have a single legit, top line #1 starter on this team next year. Aim higher. Beg Rogers for the $ to pry an overpriced stud from a team that wants out of a contract with 1-2 years left. Less costly in prospects and you're not trapped in a long term deal. Need to figure out who I go after though... Edit: David Price. There. I said it. Go ahead and rip it.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted August 29, 2013 Posted August 29, 2013 JFaS, your projections on Jimenez and Stroman seem a bit optimistic.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted August 29, 2013 Posted August 29, 2013 - Trade Drabek and Arencibia to Arizona for Chris Owings They would never ever take that
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted August 29, 2013 Posted August 29, 2013 - Qualify and sign Josh Johnson Qualify yes. Not sure if I hope he accepts or not. I don't know why I see this pushed as an option so often on this board. I almost guarantee that $14M could be better used elsewhere.
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted August 29, 2013 Posted August 29, 2013 JFaS, I think Thole is 1.25M next year, and Kawasaki is 750k. Kirksaw, yeah I don't know if Garza at 12M is a possibility or not, but it's 2 years in a row now where he's had some injury issues and I think that could weigh down his salary a little. If not him, could go with JJ there.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted August 29, 2013 Posted August 29, 2013 ^Man is that ever a sweet plan. Thanks. I find it to be somewhat realistic and cost effective as well. The one guy I am not sure about is Infante as I don't know that we could pry him away from the Tigers. A similar talent, and from the same team actually, would be to sign Peralta and play him at 2B. His metrics at SS have been good the past few seasons so I think he could handle it. Also, he would give us some roster flexibility in that we wouldn't necessarily need Barmes at that point as Peralta could serve as the starting 2B and backup SS, something Infante can't really do.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted August 29, 2013 Posted August 29, 2013 I don't know why I see this pushed as an option so often on this board. I almost guarantee that $14M could be better used elsewhere. I know what you mean, it's a tricky situation. You just hate to see him walk for nothing after trading away so much to get him. And the ceiling is so high... A 1 year deal at 14M doesn't pose any risk beyond 2014. And having a THIRD first round draft pick (if he then signs elsewhere) would be awfully nice.
Captain Adama Old-Timey Member Posted August 29, 2013 Posted August 29, 2013 They would never ever take that No they wouldn't, Drabek wouldn't come close to their rotation and Arencibia would remain a backup at best. Still though, even though Owings is at a premium position, the guy needs to learn to take a f***ing walk.
z3r0s Old-Timey Member Posted August 29, 2013 Posted August 29, 2013 Oh god, why did we not trade Casey for prospects when we had the chance.... That money could have gone elsewhere!
KSaw Verified Member Posted August 29, 2013 Author Posted August 29, 2013 They would never ever take that I think they would. The kid is very blocked and options don't grow on trees. Drabek is still a good young talent and is bouncing back better than anyone would expect off a 2nd TJ surgery. There has been trade talk around him and a starter is apparently what they're hoping for. Seems like a good fit. People don't often trade SPs for unproven young position players. Arencibia was just a throw in. He's cheap and balls (that he doesn't miss) would jump off his bat in the Arizona air.
ace3113 Verified Member Posted August 29, 2013 Posted August 29, 2013 Buy out Lind. Let Johnson walk. Trade Santos and Morrow. Use savings to secretly hire sleeper cell terrorist group. Have them blow up Rogers Center. Collect insurance money. The end.
ace3113 Verified Member Posted August 29, 2013 Posted August 29, 2013 Okay, on a serious note. Sign Matt Garza for similar to what Anibal Sanchez got (16mm per). He doesn't cost a draft pick, is only 29, and is at least a very good 3 starter if not a 2 on a good team. Trade Morrow + Happ + Prospect for James Shields. Sign Shields to a long term contract. Qualify Johnson. Shields Garza Buehrle Dickey Johnson
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted August 29, 2013 Posted August 29, 2013 Terminator, it's because he would be a steal at 14M or lower, he had a 3.59 xFIP and 3.73 SIERA. SIERA and xFIP are the two best stats at predicting future performance for a pitcher. Yes, I know all about his peripherals. But you're ignoring his injury history. He's had about 8 years in the bigs now and 4 of them have been derailed by injury and he's turning 30 next season. How many innings would you pencil him in for next season? Another 80 like this year? That certainly wouldn't be worth 14 million.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted August 29, 2013 Posted August 29, 2013 Trade Morrow + Happ + Prospect for James Shields. Sign Shields to a long term contract. Idk about signing Garza. But even if Morrow is my favorite Jay, this would be kinda epic.
ace3113 Verified Member Posted August 29, 2013 Posted August 29, 2013 Idk about signing Garza. But even if Morrow is my favorite Jay, this would be kinda epic. I think it would make some sense for KC. Shields is a free agent after 2014. Happ and Morrow are signed to reasonable money through 2015 (13mm total). The prospect would probably have to be someone like Stroman or Norris though. Sheilds is a legit 2 starter in the East. Morrow and Happ are 3-4 starters who would give KC rotation depth for 2 years, plus a prospect with high upside like Stro or Norris. It would be imperative to lock up Shields if we gave up that much though.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted August 29, 2013 Posted August 29, 2013 Yeah, I'd do that. Definitely. Idk, I'll talk to my Royals fan friend and see if that's plausible.
ace3113 Verified Member Posted August 29, 2013 Posted August 29, 2013 Yeah, I'd do that. Definitely. Idk, I'll talk to my Royals fan friend and see if that's plausible. Yeah, see what he thinks would be a fair deal. I'd be curious to find out.
ace3113 Verified Member Posted August 29, 2013 Posted August 29, 2013 IMO Happ decreases the overall value of the package and Morrow doesn't carry much value anymore. I think they'll keep Shields, but if we did want him we'd be looking at close to the Dickey package. Something like Stroman and Gose. No way they move him for Morrow and Happ a year after moving the best prospect in baseball for him. I would think Morrow + Happ + Stroman have more value than a Stroman + Gose package, especially since the Royals already have Cain in centerfield. My reasoning for including Morrow and Happ, was because the Royals will have virtually no pitching depth with Santana already set to bolt as a FA. If they also traded Shields this off season for anything that didn't include at least 1 major league ready arm, their rotation would consist solely of Jeremy Guthrie and Danny Duffy (who is coming off TJ and has never thrown more than 106 innings in the MLB), without much help coming by way of the farm for at least 2 more years. This way they would get two starters to help fill out their rotation, plus a high level prospect in Stroman or Norris. They could and certainly will get better offers I'm sure from other teams. But I'm measuring my offer against the value of the draft pick they would get for holding onto Shields, rather than what another team might offer.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted August 29, 2013 Posted August 29, 2013 I, for one, still want to keep Morrow. That f***er owes us a no-hitter and a 20 win season. (Kidding, he doesn't owe us squat, but the last two seasons I felt he was poised for that massive breakout killer season and I don't want it to happen somewhere else) What a frustrating player to be a big fan of. He's like the Lamborghini that thrills you when it's working but spends 80% of the time in the shop getting worked on. (No, I don't own one of those)
