G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted August 28, 2013 Posted August 28, 2013 Stand to make about 100 million dollars this year, thanks to a 21 million dollar payroll and revenue sharing Will make more money than the last 6 World Series winners combined Crazy http://www.forbes.com/sites/danalexander/2013/08/26/2013-houston-astros-baseballs-worst-team-is-most-profitable-in-history/
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted August 28, 2013 Author Posted August 28, 2013 TV deal Money too Have they got a decent deal? Also haven't seen attendance figures but that's probably the smallest part. Edit: Answering my own question. 80M in TV revenue.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted August 28, 2013 Author Posted August 28, 2013 Yahoo Sports: http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/mlb-big-league-stew/houston-astros-worst-record-baseball-making-most-money-175023013.html "And that $21 million is couch-cushion money compared to some of baseball's most bloated payrolls. Consider this: The Yankees have nine players who make more than the Astros entire roster makes. Alex Rodriguez, baseball's highest-paid player, is supposed to make $28 million this season. The highest paid Astro? That's Eric Bedard, who is making $1.15 million. A big chunk of the Astros' profits come from their TV deal, booming sources of income for pro sports teams these days. The Astros' deal pays them $80 million this season. Combine that with the very low payroll and an attendance that's not the absolute worst in baseball, and you've got a formula to count money."

It depends when that goes on the books I guess. It might not kick until Jan. 1 or something. I don't know. But you're right, it wasn't included in this analysis of the finances.
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted August 28, 2013 Posted August 28, 2013 The Astros shouldn't be getting any revenue-sharing money and should be subject to some sort of salary floor. This is ridiculous. We must blame Selig....Earn losing; the perfect business.

They likely have significant stadium debt they're paying down (although I didn't check), along with all the other front office salaries and stuff. Still, even with all that I wouldn't be surprised to see them clear 50 - 75M. There really does need to be a firmer salary floor.
Howard Roark Verified Member Posted August 28, 2013 Posted August 28, 2013 The Astros shouldn't be getting any revenue-sharing money and should be subject to some sort of salary floor. This is ridiculous. The salary floor should be 25 players making the league minimum. That s*** is f***ing up the NHL, all it does it aid ridiculous salary-inflation amongst lower and mid-tier talent.
Howard Roark Verified Member Posted August 28, 2013 Posted August 28, 2013 There has to be a middle ground here though. You can't give owners an incentive to lose. Teams should be required to spend a certain amount (all?) of their revenue sharing money on salaries. No and no. What is so bad about pursuing a maximalist strategy within your chosen framework? I enjoy watching the special cases such as this, the GM-ing game and the various strategies employed are almost as interesting for me as the game itself, from a strategy viewpoint. Why should a team be forced to employ high-paid veterans when they're trying to start from the ground up? Makes no sense to me.
Howard Roark Verified Member Posted August 28, 2013 Posted August 28, 2013 The Astros and Marlins are sapping interest from the game. Do you really believe that? So now fans of other teams are going to stop being baseball fans because those two teams are making large profits? Come on man....... Couldn't disagree more. Astros fans know what their FO is up to, and have swallowed/are swallowing their bitter medicine to get to better days, which look to be fast approaching because they have a savvy GM. Loria is Loria, he's just a terrible owner. I don't see why you care about a couple of teams making large profits, just seems like a strange thing to get hung up on. Who the f*** cares?
Howard Roark Verified Member Posted August 29, 2013 Posted August 29, 2013 I love what the Astros are doing. Only way to rebuild it to flat out commit it. Not only have they they cleaned house of salary. As soon as a player not in the future plans gets some trade value ala Justin Maxwell they ship him out for something. I really wish the Blue Jays what do that. But they seem content on wasting assets and letting contracts run out. Doesn't matter if the prospects are great. You never know when you might catch lightning in a bottle with a kid you like. They have already had a few great drafts already and more on the way. The fans get to watch the team grow. And when they're ready to spend they can add the pieces they need with all the potential core players they have brought in through draft and trade. Exactly what I thought the Blue Jays would do then the trades happened. Same here. I tend to be a bit of an all-or-nothing thinker (see what I did thar?) and so I'm really into how they're going about their rebuild. No f***ing around, no half-measures, full commitment.

Exactly what I thought the Blue Jays would do then the trades happened. The Blue Jays are always caught in between. They should've blown it up the 1st 2 years of AA's tenure, instead they went with the retool. They extended Bautista and Romero and went after guys like Rasmus, Escobar and Morrow who could've been flipped for more prospects if they had committed to a full rebuild. Last offseason's trades were another example of the fact that they're trying to sell ratings and hype at the expense of what's best for the franchise on the field.
