GD Old-Timey Member Posted September 5, 2013 Posted September 5, 2013 I think we should make a poll about Goins and then we can close the book on him Holy f***ing s***, Arkadium is gone or dead or idek. I didn't even notice.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted September 5, 2013 Posted September 5, 2013 He got ripped in one of his poll threads and got pissed off and declared he was leaving Oh yeah, I remember that alright, I just can't believe he actually left.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted September 5, 2013 Posted September 5, 2013 He's not missed. I didn't even notice him. Sure as f*** don't miss the polls.
Gen.Disarray Old-Timey Member Posted September 5, 2013 Posted September 5, 2013 Chris Johnson has a .407 BABIP. Much of his success is BABIP driven. There‘s no room for BABIP on the short bus. Nice try though.

GD Old-Timey Member Posted September 5, 2013 Posted September 5, 2013 “I know he’s done fairly well with the bat in a limited sample size, but I don’t know that I would put a whole lot of stock in it, because we have a whole lot of minor league time with him and we have a sense of what type of hitter he is,” Anthopoulos said. fwiw
flafson Verified Member Posted September 5, 2013 Posted September 5, 2013 So AA pretty sure he's not a good hitter but he values his defense. Makes sense.
The Cats Ass Old-Timey Member Posted September 5, 2013 Posted September 5, 2013 I would take someone with really good defense like Goins who can't hit a lick but can save runs with his glove, over someone like Izturis.

Yep, and with a young guy like Goins you have the potential for growth and improvement with the bat.

Makes sense. •Anthopoulos feels that, from a defensive standpoint, rookie Ryan Goins could be the best second baseman the Blue Jays have had since Orlando Hudson in his prime. Indeed, both UZR/150 (+40.6) and The Fielding Bible (+6 runs) rave about Goins defense in an admittedly microscopic 99-inning sample size. This was from AA's interview this morning.

AA always does this when he's buffing a guy up for trade potential
leaffie Verified Member Posted September 5, 2013 Posted September 5, 2013 Maybe he should be looking for his offense somewhere else, and keep someone who will provide excellent defense to go with Lawrie and Reyes.
The Cats Ass Old-Timey Member Posted September 5, 2013 Posted September 5, 2013 According to baseball reference his dWAR averaged over a full season would put him at 9.5WAR. If his offence was replacement level. But if you include his slightly above replacement level batting right now, over a full season, he's a 12.2WAR player.

o2cui2i Community Moderator Posted September 5, 2013 Posted September 5, 2013 Maybe he should be looking for his offense somewhere else, and keep someone who will provide excellent defense to go with Lawrie and Reyes. that would imply that AA actually plans his moves with wins in mind. remember AA was the one who brought in ground ball pitchers and kept a catcher who cant catch or hit and had Lind, EE, Izturis, DeRosa and Bumfiasco has is right side options. AA doesn't know how to evaluate players or how to fit a team together. dont even go into matching team to ball park because he couldnt find that with a shuttle drop off service. not sure why AA bothers to talk to the media. especially after justifying the miami trade by declaring that Bonifacio as the key to the trade going through??? after that he should just has his mouth permanently sealed.
o2cui2i Community Moderator Posted September 5, 2013 Posted September 5, 2013 #misusingstatistics I'm just happy I dont have to watch Bumfiasco play second. Goins has been great with the glove, but like most have pointed out SSS. I'd agree that he is probably the best defensive option in the jays system, but annointing him as the second coming is premature jizz. I wouldn't hate a guy who can actually play second being looked at for the job next year. that would be something new for AA

theblujay Verified Member Posted September 7, 2013 Posted September 7, 2013 Well this thread has fallen a bit. I've been thinking about it and I don't think I would mind Goins starting at 2B next year. I think our money/assets should definitely be spent on SP and C/LF first. Besides Cano there really isn't a 2B that's worth getting as a FA, and I really don't want to give up what's left of our farm system in a trade for a 2B. Izturis really hasn't worked out and I don't want him starting at 2B next year, I'd much rather have someone who can play D, like Goins. Kawasaki is a decentoption, but I think Goins is much better on D and at the plate.

theblujay Verified Member Posted September 8, 2013 Posted September 8, 2013 Do you guys expect AA to go out and find studs at 2B,C,LF,DH and a couple stud SP this offseason without spending more than ~10-15 million? Do you want him to ravish the farm system again? With the current state of this franchise I don't think we'll be able to fill all the holes. Personally I think the best moves would be to use Gose/Pillar and Goins/Kawasaki to fill holes at 2B and CF (Move Rasmus to left) and use the money on a C, LF and a couple good SP.

theblujay Verified Member Posted September 8, 2013 Posted September 8, 2013 No one is calling for a stud, we'd just like someone who isn't god damn replacement level Who are we gonna get then? And how much are you willing to give up?
GD Old-Timey Member Posted September 8, 2013 Posted September 8, 2013 Who are we gonna get then? And how much are you willing to give up? Omar Infante, Jhonny Peralta, Howie Kendrick, Daniel Murphy, Mark Ellis, maybe even Bryan Roberts. All better than Goins.
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted September 8, 2013 Posted September 8, 2013 Omar Infante, Jhonny Peralta, Howie Kendrick, Daniel Murphy, Mark Ellis, maybe even Bryan Roberts. All better than Goins. Murphy is a like a younger Izturis. Lousy fielder, used to get on base but everything is trending the wrong way. If you're going to bet on a dead cat bounce from a guy like that, it might as well be the one you already have signed for two years. I realize you weren't actually making a pitch for him just throwing him out as a guy who at least theoretically is better than Goins but I used your post as a starting point to talk about him.

Fair enough, haha. I'm just saying he's not Ryan god damn Goins. My #1 option for next year is probably Peralta (thanks to NJH for the idea). There's always moving Reyes over and signing Brendan Ryan. Ooh, Starlin Castro could be a cat bounce target.
