oakville69 Verified Member Posted August 26, 2013 Posted August 26, 2013 Today on Blue Jays Central, Gregg Zaun speculated that Gibbons is the wrong manager for this roster. Essentially, he said that Gibby is a victim of a veteran based roster that cannot police themselves. I think this is a "canary in the cold mine" comment. Zaun said that Gibby could manage the Red Sox or Yankees but not the Jays. Zaun does not think that Gibby deserves to be fired but he may be a sacrificial lamb at the end of the season. Thoughts? I doubt AA will fire Gibby because he feels comfortable with him but stranger things have happened.
digiblader Verified Member Posted August 26, 2013 Posted August 26, 2013 Most likely Gibbons is gone. Pete Walker is likely a goner after this season too after this terrible performance. Hey, maybe we can go after Mike Sciosia--he's expected to be fired by the Angels after this season. Ned Yost and Eric Wedge could be on the market too--as both face the axe due to their team's poor performance.
Errorcebia Verified Member Posted August 26, 2013 Posted August 26, 2013 If they want to hire Manny Acta, I would be fine with firing him, but I really see no reason to. In-game managing has been an improvement over last 2 seasons, and I think most who watch the games would agree with that. We shouldn't be accommodating the problem players on the team by firing a manager they might not like.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted August 26, 2013 Posted August 26, 2013 Ned Yost Holy f***ing s***, just STOP TALKING. I'd like to see Sal Fasano. Sal Fasano, Matt Williams, Demarlo Hale, Manny Acta. Those would probably be my favorite candidates. I'm interested in Ripken wanting to manage, though.
Laika Community Moderator Posted August 26, 2013 Posted August 26, 2013 He certainly doesn't deserve to be fired, by any means.

The extra payroll for the same record won't wash. He went all in, someone has to leave the table. Don't know if Walker will be enough.
oakville69 Verified Member Posted August 26, 2013 Author Posted August 26, 2013 Would AA go after Scosia who has no links to the Jays? AA said he was not comfortable with Farrell, who was with the Red Sox as a pitching coach. I could see AA being afraid of a veteran successful Manager with playoff experience. I can't see Mike Scosia listening to anything AA tells him. Scosia would not put up with Lawrie at 2B experiments.
ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted August 26, 2013 Posted August 26, 2013 Yes, Gibbons will be the manager opening day 2014. Remember, AA hired him because they became friends during their time in the JPR regime. He certainly wasn't hired because he was a hot commodity. AA would look like a bigger idiot if he fired him because he'd be telling the baseball world that he hired the wrong manager for the 2nd time in 2 tries. I doubt he does that and you have to remember that AA has praised Gibbons for his bullpen management and since AA is obsessed with bullpens, he must really hold Gibbons in very high regard.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted August 26, 2013 Posted August 26, 2013 Pete Walker out, Hentgen up to pitching coach...possibly Tom Signore up to Bullpen coach but more likely it's a bigger baseball name. #offseasonbuzz
Anemic0ffense Verified Member Posted August 26, 2013 Posted August 26, 2013 I like Gibbons... You can put Lou Pinella (during his worst rage) on this team, and these players still wouldn't respond... AA is the one who should be fired... He's the one who assembled this atrocity
Slot Machine Verified Member Posted August 26, 2013 Posted August 26, 2013 ^For some reason I think Pinella is going to be the the next Blue Jays manager now. Think of the PR spin! He's not much older than Leyland.
GeorgiaPeach Verified Member Posted August 26, 2013 Posted August 26, 2013 I can't see Mike Scosia listening to anything AA tells him. Scosia would not put up with Lawrie at 2B experiments. If the reasoning for those experiments was anything other than there was heavy trade talks at the time to acquire a 3B than it was a f***ing stupid experiment. The rationale of "he's in a slump at the plate and we're gonna try to shake things up by moving him to another position he failed at in the past, off a position he's strong at now" was lunacy.

AA is the one who should be fired... He's the one who assembled this atrocity IMO it's Beeston who needs to step down. The two paths the organization has taken since Alex took over are very different. You have the very creative pick acquiring, prospect loading up on, value based, up the middle strength, future-outlook path, where Alex was very vocal and talking all the time about the moves he was making. Then it careened into the uncreative trade everything we just acquired, for old expensive players on the downswings of their careers, losing all the value gained through past trades and created this little box of a window to contend path. And Alex doesn't talk much anymore. It's almost like Beeston interjects when he pleases (Farrell to Boston, all Beeston & Boston ownership) and the man knows f*** all about what's going on in baseball right now. Essentially Beeston snipped AA. Beeston always talks of the 92 & 93 teams like we're still living in that time. And gushes about the veteran teams and the stars/HOF'ers we had. Times have changed Paul, and old teams aren't the way to go. And unless Toronto intends on being a Top 5 spender you pretty much have no shot to contend ever with this retarded vision.

BlueJayWay Verified Member Posted August 26, 2013 Posted August 26, 2013 I wouldn't be surprised if it were someone else. In fact I'm kind of leaning toward that being more likely than he stays.

If only we could find a cool headed manager with major league pitching coach experience. You know, like they have in Bos... Oh wait, never mind.
Convo Verified Member Posted August 26, 2013 Posted August 26, 2013 Gibbons should stay for the simple reason that AA needs to focus his time and energy on more important things like fixing the SP, C, LF, and 2B.

To be honest, i want the guys within to be given a shot at LF and 2B, it's yet to be seen both both Pillar and Goins look like they have what it takes, even though it's a bit early to tell.
P2F Old-Timey Member Posted August 26, 2013 Posted August 26, 2013 He certainly doesn't deserve to be fired, by any means. Agreed. Firing Gibby and the subsequent managerial search would just take the organisation back another step, and would likely impede on improving the roster.

I assume you're being sarcastic? If not, you're totally fine with another season being punted?
digiblader Verified Member Posted August 26, 2013 Posted August 26, 2013 Because of Goins' emergence, the focus should be on SP, C and LF (depending if Pillar or Gose hit) And we need a new pitching coach and manager as well.
digiblader Verified Member Posted August 26, 2013 Posted August 26, 2013 FYI, Goins is playing a lot better than Maicier Izturis and Emilio Bonifacio at 2B so far defensively. Ditto for Munenori Kawasaki.. Considering the lack of decent 2B on the market outside of Cano (who's likely staying with the Yankees), we need to evaluate which of these two (Goins and Kawasaki) will contribute at 2B next season--free agency isn't going to help. We'll have an easier time finding SP and C than 2B.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted August 26, 2013 Posted August 26, 2013 Because of Goins' emergence http://i48.tinypic.com/156e70w.jpg Guys, Goins has been half decent in 12 PA. He's nice defensively, but seriously, can we not start making him seem like a legitimate starting option a la Sierra? He's a nice utility guy, and I would love him pushing us to trade Izturdis (if Kawasaki doesn't do that), but let's not make it seem like he's more than a slightly above replacement level utility guy.
digiblader Verified Member Posted August 26, 2013 Posted August 26, 2013 Unless you want to trade for someone, there's nothing on the 2B market: Second basemen (excluding ones with club options): Yuniesky Betancourt (32) Robinson Cano (31) Alexi Casilla (29) Omar Infante (32) Kelly Johnson (32) Nick Punto (36) Brian Roberts (36) Ramon Santiago (34) Skip Schumaker (34) It's a very weak free agent crop.

Well, 7 of them are weak, and one is excellent but prohibitively/insanely expensive. So right, AA is not shopping from that list.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted August 26, 2013 Posted August 26, 2013 It's a very weak free agent crop. At least 5-6 of those guys will outproduce Ryan Goins next year. I could get behind an Omar Infante signing.
digiblader Verified Member Posted August 26, 2013 Posted August 26, 2013 Let's wait and see how Goins does in the remaining 30 games or so and then we'll evaluate. Anyone's got to be better than Izturis...
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted August 26, 2013 Posted August 26, 2013 Meanwhile Bonifacio .364 OBP in Kansas City... Of course.
frizzer1 Verified Member Posted August 26, 2013 Posted August 26, 2013 I gibbons comes back I would bet that the attendance will drop way off.......there has to be a change..they have to sell hope and Gibbons represents failure, whether fair or not.
