I don't think anyone can help JJ

But some may hurt him. This game is more exciting than opening night, all the Canadian fans, Josh under the microscope: it is almost like a World Series game seven for the Jays, ha

I, for one, can't wait for the narratives next year when he's pitching to a sub-4 ERA somewhere else. "He just couldn't handle the AL East". "AJ Burnett 2.0".

I'm sick of that excuse... If JJ was on the Sox, he'd be dealing... This team just has a culture of losing... Can I prove that's the reason why Johnson blows this year? Nah, but it's just a feeling I have... Sorry for being the pessimist in the room

Its almost an easy bet for him to bounce back next year. Nicolino and Handsome might both be in the majors next year. Henderson, HJ and Nicolino helping the Miami Marlins win games wow

I'd be interested in seeing the pitcher stats when he's catching, other than Dickey.

I can't believe he's hitting this terrible though. I actually expected him to hit pretty good.

Me too. Not easy to hit when it's evert 5 days. I think he can hit if he is healthy and playing every day.

I've pointed this out before and the Jays staff are very aware of it. JJ has tipped his pitches since returning from the triceps injury. His breaking balls have been released at 2 o'clock and his fastballs closer to 1 o'clock. Last night he had his release point matching on all pitches until the 5th. They got him out with a pitch count under 85. This is a mechanics work in progress to get him back to his old self. No point on ripping on Johnson. His stuff is fine, even with a flat 4-seamer that has always been pretty flat. He's been beaten up because hitters have known what's coming. That kinda makes hitting pretty easy.

Love Thole catching btw. Leave him in for a few games and allow him to get his hitting stroke going. He's historically a solid OBP guy v rhp.

He's hit at least 3 balls that were yard if the dome were closed. I was there for the shot to left centre v Houston that was run down and caught against the wall. Part of the problem, other than sample size, is that he's hitting infield choppers or shots to gaps that are being caught on good fielding plays. He's not knocking any of his typical singles just over the infield. It'll work out in time.

If if's and buts were candy and nuts. He has 7 career HRs, a .069 ISO, and .319 SLG. Chances are he didn't hit 3 balls that would have left the park unless there were angels in the OF.

He's hitting .098 and has a .170 wOBA/-4 wRC+. It doesn't matter if he was BABIPing .400 he'd still be terrible.

Do you actually watch the games? He's a singles hitter who has been working on driving the ball. It was working in Buffalo. He hasn't had any regular ABs in Toronto. If he were hitting .400 the sample size would be too small to judge and hitting well below the Mendoza line also doesn't change the sample size.

I watch most of the games? Obviously can't watch 'em all. Certainly better than JPA who can't hit or catch but, I'm baffled how anyone can watch Thole and say, "that's an MLB starting C right there". JPA being terrible does not mean Thole is any good.

The Mendoza line will be replaced with Arencibia line.

even if Thole was hitting .000 he'd hurt the jays less than JPA. JPA is the worst defensive catcher in baseball. not saying Thole is good, but he's light years ahead of JPA and JPA is never going rise up to be a replacement level catcher.

Thole is not an everyday catcher but he is good enough to be the primary half of a platoon. He is a good receiver and does get on base v rhp when he plays with some regularity. I'm not talking about a potential all-star here but a player who is younger than JPA who has the upside to be a solid backstop.

Wholeheartedly agree that Thole can be fine against righties. I hate the idea of a platoon at catcher and he doesn't have a great toolset for a backup. His best role is in AAA as depth.

Catcher is the one position where I could live with a full time platoon. Catchers can't play every game and do need rest. Toronto rode this before with Whitt and Martinez with good results.

Catcher is too important to let the other teams dictate match-ups. It's a huge advantage if you have a plus C as no other position influences a game as much as the backstop. Obviously a platoon at C isn't ideal but, platoons never are. The Jays can definitely win with a platoon at C, it's just a lot harder to get the right fit. AA should look to every avenue to improve this team and I shouldn't speak in absolutes. If AA only uses Thole against RHP he can probably put up average-ish stat lines, just make sure you find a great platoon-mate. Carlos Ruiz mashes lefties and could be a prime value guy. I think it goes with out saying a Ruiz + Thole platoon would be better than going with the 1 WAR veterans that are available every off season and would definitely add a few wins to the team. McCann is an ideal target IMO.
