"Anthopoulos has yet to receive a payroll figure for 2014, but pointed out that “we won’t be going backwards,” from the current $120 million, and a reasonable guess for next year is something in the $140 million range. But with the new Fox and TBS TV contracts kicking in next year and pumping in about $800 million annually into the industry, that estimate could be light."

He seems to imply that could go even higher than $140 Mil.

This organization just doesn't get it. NEWSFLASH: you cannot spend your problems away anymore, it has to be done through the draft and the farm.

We're a big market team. Of course we're gonna spend. What do you think we are, Tampa?

Then lets throw all that cash at Andrew Friedman.

Sure--Tampa's not gonna be able to afford to keep their starters after this year, especially David Price, who will likely be traded(as he's likely to make $15-20M in arb)

And their scouting team. Man, and then they get Meyers. Crap, now T B has Longo, Meyers, and endless pitching. Good luck, Jays

It's funny how many people were so adamant that there is no more money, or that we would only barely increase payroll. That roughly $25M per team in added revenue alone should have been a reasonable indication as well as the fact that when AA made those deals last winter they knew what they were getting with some of those contracts.

I think were closer to $150M by the time spring training hits.

Actually, we'll probably be picking up Linds option, taking us to 140. Probably a couple million over that with the surprising play of Cecil and Rasmus. Payroll better be going to 170 if we want to contend.

That's just it... The payroll is going to be round 140 with pretty much the same team on the field as this year. Announcing that it's going to increase to 140 really means nothing

Should've continued building the team through the draft and getting guys like Escobar and Rasmus. Oh well, too late now.

It sounds sexy. The casuals will think we have $20 million to add pieces with. Really, it isn't worth announcing. A payroll any less than that would be a giant embarrassment. If 140 is the max, I'm really looking forward to watching these idiots try and add 10+ wins to the roster.

And to think that in just one more year the team likely would have been in a perfect position if AA had just stayed the course.

Yeah. It will be really interesting to see if they make the QO to JJ. You'd think he'd be a prime candidate to bounce back to some sort of respectability in 2014.

There's no real interesting arbitration issues... Cecil and Rogers will get their 1st arb deals, maybe Lincoln also but they won't be expensive. JPA might get his too unless the guys running this team grow a brain and realize he's pretty s*****. Trade or non-tendering him and Bonifacio should be no-brain moves.

Re-signing Davis is still an option and they could probably get him for 2.5-3

You would think they'd realize after this offseason that spending loads of cash doesn't make you a force.

You almost have to wonder if they may think about trading Morrow and Melky (if possible). Move EE to LF. Along with Boni going, that would free up quite a lot.

I would MUCH rather be Tampa than this mess of a "big market" team. Spending aimlessly has gotten us nowhere and will never work, period.

I suspect they'll make a couple of trades involving guys who're making some coin. I'd like to see JJ back, but I doubt he'll want to come back. I think he'll take a 1 year deal with an NL team. I'd like to see them improve the D at C and 2b/SS (if Reyes accepts a move to 2b). I could see Lind and Janssen traded after picking up their options.
Posted
The nice thing about Janssen is he has value and makes $4 million, but can be moved without really opening up a hole. Even Lind serves a purpose as RH platoon DH, and would have to be replaced if moved. Janssen is easily our best trade chip.

Yup. Janssen could bring back a player, hopefully a MIF. It would be nice if they could get rid of Cabrera's salary, but that's wishful thinking. I think they'll bet on him rebounding on a contract year. Basically, they'll need huge turnarounds from JJ, if back, Morrow, Dickey, Cabrera and Lawrie. Not likely that they all stay healthy.

If they're gonna go with the same pitching staff, I'd rather they focus on the D first and foremost at C and 2B/SS. If Lind is not back and they don't sign a legit DH, I'd rather they DH Cabrera and put Gose/Davis or Pillar in LF to be honest. Defense has hurt this team A LOT. I wonder how feasible a Choo signing would be with a back-loaded contract.

Posted
I really don't think JJ is back. I just don't see how he fits the salary structure. I think he'll probably sign a Haren/Santana-esque deal somewhere and be a bargain, but probably not here.

There are just so many holes though. C and 2B absolutely need to be addressed. Lind absolutely needs a platoon partner if he's retained. We absolutely need a better rotation.

I also don't see JJ back, but I didn't see them making the trades they made last offseason either, we'll have to wait and see. I was thinking they could sign a F/A or 2 with back-loaded deals since they'll have some room in 2016. Who knows.

Actually Bautista is our best trade chip, but he's part of the "core". If payroll is going up then Bautista has to be a part of it with his good value. Jansenn is by far our biggest chip that is replaceable. Maybe Buehrle can be traded if we eat $5 per and he finishes the year strong. We would then hope that Hutch or Drabek can give us quality innings. I say trade MB and go with Hutch or Drabek to start the year, then re calibrate as the season progresses. Hopefully we hang around long enough to make a significant addition at the trade deadline. MB will give us innings, but the 4.5 - 5 ERA is pretty much a guarantee,so i'd say we don't lose much in Hutch or possibly Drabek while saving $13-18mil.

I wonder what the perception of Toronto is like around the league after this disaster. I can't imagine we're going to be a very popular destination. Who wants to play in Canada with a bunch of past-their-prime losers who haven't made the playoffs in 2 decades?

Hey,at least you can smoke crack with the mayor. Trade for Josh Hamilton and ask them to eat salary? LOL..

Actually..?

Well, a lot of people have argued that this was the case already, just replace "past-their-prime-losers" with "never-done-anything-losers". They also argued that it was because of F/A's not wanting to sign with the Blue Jays that they went out and overpaid in $ and prospects. In a way, you could argue that increasing payroll and sticking with it next year may give them a better chance to attract F/A than by having an up-and-coming-team. On the other hand, I seem to remember that Jason Grilli allegedly turned down more money from the Jays to remain with the Pirates, but it might've had something to do with having an opportunity to close so who knows.

We need grass in the RC ASAP.

Nothing against grass, but isn't it embarrassing enough to have drunk jays' fans? Imagine high Jays' fans. On the other hand, they may behave much better than the drunks so you might be on to something here.

More than that, I wouldn't be surprised at another 25 on top of that.

I agree. With the added TV money and the three year "go for it" window,Rogers really doesn't have a choice. They better pray the team gets off to a good start next year, because ticket sales will be probably sold on the per game basis or flex packs at best. Season ticket sales will be down next year.

I'm really not on board with either Hutch or Drabek on the opening-day 5-man rotation. For different reasons. Hutch I see as a valid starter, but as we're seeing this year we need the depth. We're better off signing a Hammel/Colon/Floy/Feldman/Baker/Lewis etc... and keeping Hutch in AAA as depth. Drabek I see as a replacement-level shitbag who belongs nowhere near a discussion about the opening-day 25-man.

Stroman may surprise and crack the rotation next year also, but he like Hutch can provide quality depth. AA probably signs some older vet who will pitch a lot worse than Hutch or Stroman.
