How do you know what we are going to get back? We are going to have way too many relievers come the 2nd half of the season, and we might be able to part with some of our relievers to help us in a position of need

 

Oliver is retiring at the end of the season, there is NO reason to keep him

Keep in mind that players like Oliver, Bonifacio or Lincoln would have no trouble clearing waivers and can still be traded.

I really don't see the trade value in Oliver right now, doubt any team would give more than an org guy. If he's not dealt it could very easily be because there's no market for him.

 

Honestly, we may get more for Oliver hanging on to him and trading him in late August. Some contender is bound to be pretty desperate by then, and non contenders are unlikely to claim him.

Oliver is taking innings from somebody like Stilson who could get his feet wet in the majors. Oliver is retiring we don't need him. Who cares about the return. Take a flyer on somebody who knows what you might get.

 

Nobody is expecting a great return.

 

Putting Stilson on the 40-man roster when he wouldn't be rule 5 in the offseason would be really poor asset management.

I expect DeRosa will be moved in a week or three as well. He'll easily clear waivers and really is a good character guy to have on a playoff team, even if he isn't activated. Also multi position insurance in case of an injury.

So you throw away players because there's no 40-man roster room for them? And so you can call up a player you want long term but who won't be on the team next year? Oh ya, and you waste an option on him as well when he gets sent down in April.
