billjc33 Verified Member Posted July 26, 2013 Posted July 26, 2013 So starting off the year we had one of the top 5 rotations on paper, with probably the least amount of quality depth starters in the minors. A lot of injuries exposed this lack of depth with us having guys like Redmond+++ getting 5 starts. Now my question is regarding next year when we will have an extensive amount of depth but they will be prospects not 15 year mlb vets that can't cut it anymore. What are the options looking like? Now that these pitchers will require options to go up and down and were not putting unwanted old guys through waivers what are their status' Starters Dickey Johnson (assuming he takes the QO) Buerhle Morrow Happ Depth Options? Drebek Hutchinson Nolin Stroman Sanchez Oh my god doesn't the looks of that just make you hate all the tommy john last year. For how raped and piledged our farm is that is a lot of near ready mlb talent right their

Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted July 26, 2013 Posted July 26, 2013 This (except Peavy). Right now for opening day 2014 we have a (3/4 with giant health concerns Morrow) two healthy 3/4 types (Buehrle and Dickey) a 5 (Happ) and then guys like Hutch, Rogers, Stroman, and Nolin. Most of the latter group will fail, and at least one of the established arms will get hurt. We don't have nearly enough wins in the rotation. Peavy's health concerns me.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted July 26, 2013 Posted July 26, 2013 get a close to MLB prospect pitcher with high upside (eg. Taillon) for an aging regular and go with a younger staff screw Peavy, he's a tweak from washing out of baseball

Only one major injury in his career. There is a lot of veterin choices in FA this year; Kuroda, Burnett, Halladay! that would be interested in 1 year deals (maybe two?)
fatcowxlive Old-Timey Member Posted July 26, 2013 Posted July 26, 2013 I'd love Burnett. A workhorse who will come on a 1-2 year commitment. That said, a return to the AL East is probably the last thing he wants. Yes he'd probably will think it's career suicide (but his career is almost coming to an end... 37 years old!).... but maybe if we kick a bit more money than the rest he might forget about all that and just take it How much do you think we have to pay him? $11m per year at max? Or will he demand more? I think if we can somehow lock in a 2/$22m deal it's a steal, and maybe AA can throw a $10m option with like a $1m buyout just to make AJ feel more financially secure.
fatcowxlive Old-Timey Member Posted July 26, 2013 Posted July 26, 2013 I really have no idea. He'll probably have a half dozen NL suitors at 2/22, and wouldn't have to come to Canada to play for a giant shitshow of an organization. AA would probably have a hard time getting a phone call returned. Hahahahaha oh man we have dug ourselves a hole. 2/$26m with a $11m/$1m option/buyout would be pushing it to the max. Who knows if he accepts that though. How much do you think we can get Doc Halladay back for? He could prove to have a nice comeback year + sell jerseys, ads, tickets. Good marketing tool. The same as Burnett (given his recent performances + injuries?)? Veterin estimation is hard lol
Chappy Community Moderator Posted July 26, 2013 Posted July 26, 2013 AA will go get Halladay. They need another old timer to sit at the seniors table with Dickey and Buehrle to discuss yesteryear.

Unfortunately, marketing seems to be the primary consideration with this club these days, as opposed to making the cold, heartless decisions necessary to put a superior product on the field at all times, and cycle out the old/bring in the new to keep it that way. I'd be shocked if they didn't make a huge push to bring him back.

I could see Doc brought in as a PR move. Though I'm sure Doc wants to pitch on a contender in the NL - if the Jays were winning this year I'm sure he'd have no problem coming here. Might be tougher to lure him now however. Also, I could see the Jays signing Marcum to a minor league deal or 1 year deal + incentives.

Dickey was supposed to be that guy, though he's been pitching more like a barely passable No. 3 or No. 4; JJ has ace potential, though injuries; won't know what you get from Morrow - he can either be dominant or injuries could be a problem, and its tough to peg him in for 25 + starts, 200+ innings, which is what you'd expect from a No. 1-2 starter; Buerhle is a solid No. 4 who provides bulk innings and Happ is just a No. 5 guy.
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted July 26, 2013 Posted July 26, 2013 He also may retire after this season. Burnett could retire, though I'm sure if a NL team offers him a 2 year deal worth $20-$25 million, he'll likely take it.

That said, a return to the AL East is probably the last thing he wants. I traded for Burnett in the offseason in the FC dynasty league. Traded Derek Jeter for Burnett + a 2nd rounder. Most managers laughed at my end of the deal, since they thought Burnett was awful. He had a terrific 2012 season in Pittsburgh with excellent K % and was a workhorse. Burnett has been a great pitcher for me this season, one of my better ones and he didn't cost that much as what other starters like Marcum, Peavy, Wilson, Garza, Haren would have costed me.

Lost faith in Morrow. He's never anywhere near healthy enough to be as good as he can be, even when he is pitching. I think the best we can reasonably hope for from him going forward is a decent #4 when healthy, and a DL resident about half of each season when not. Dickey? Another decent #3-4. JJ? Who the f*** knows. Buehrle's the devil you know, a decent #4 who eats innings. Happ is an average #5. Romero is lost in the Twilight Zone. Drabek, Hutch, Stroman I can't exactly see coming up and right away posting xFIP's of under 4.5, I just can't. They'll need time to find their way like most young starters. All in all, a lot of big-name, big-money meh-ness. I see next season being, all in all, a slight improvement over this one. Maybe I'd be down to say we win 87 games, if I was a betting man.

Dickey if healthy could be a # 2 but more likely a 3/4, JJ is history ( Can't see AA giving him a qualifing offer as he would have to take it ), Morrow is a Rich Hardin clone and can't be counted on at all, Buehrle is a #4/5 on a winning AL east team and Happ at best a #6 , Romero with command and confidence a 4/5 type and then we go to the likes of Hutch, Reyes . Drabek and McGowan are BP pieces . It is a frigging mess with a bunch of 4/5 guys . Can't see any hope of getting a top rotation guy so start praying that someone steps up .

kgm1 Verified Member Posted July 26, 2013 Posted July 26, 2013 At this point Romero is not even an option. at BEST he is a 4/5 which makes my point is we have NO top of rotation starters without much hope of getting any . the lefties we have are all 4,s at best and that is if they pitch up to potential. We have to pray Dickey regains his last years stuff and Morrow somehow stays healthy . That would be like winning the lotto .( about the same odds )
fatcowxlive Old-Timey Member Posted July 27, 2013 Posted July 27, 2013 He also may retire after this season. But if we offer him at least $22m guaranteed, I don't see why he would leave it on the table
