We traded our top prospects to the Mets for Dickey and were only 1 game better in the standings. That's horribly depressing.

This entire organization is depressing

Well, we're in good shape for that right now.. we're at #10. Don't think about tanking though--Houston or Chicago(White Sox) are likely to get the #1 pick, as both are 100 loss teams guaranteed.

If we're not in the top 5, does it even really matter if we finish 7th or 11th? They'll just take whatever high risk high school arm is available. I can't root for my team to lose. Can't do it. I understand the logic but I just don't think it'll make a huge difference at the end of the day.

Since we have a protected 1st rounder, does it matter? Remember, this year's free agent crop is expected to be lousy. At the moment, draft pick comp is expect to go to:

Robinson Cano(no surprise)

Jacoby Ellsbury

Brian McCann

Shin Soo-Choo

Kuroda(but it's likely Japan or NYY at a bloated rate considering their lousy rotation, due to Pettite, Sabathia and Hughes' declines and lack of farm depth.)

Ervin Santana

Carlos Beltran(too old!)

AJ Burnett

Chase Utley

Mike Napoli

Nelson Cruz

Tim Lincecum

Remember, there's no guarantee they get QO's... at a price of $14M/year or so, most teams won't bite.

I doubt Napoli or Cruz get QOs. They hit homers but aren't actually great baseball players.

Lincecum's the guy I want. You build depth by buying low on a few guys like him.

Nelly Cruz is one of the most hated people in Texas ... I don't think He'll receive any type of offer.

Melky 2.0?

Really? Lincecum?

Choo should be a target. Such a great ballplayer. Go defense-first with a catcher.

I'd sign Lincecum, Hammel and Pelfrey/(other cheap guy) and have the latter two compete for a rotation spot. Make the one who misses out a long-man, put Drabek in middle relief and trade Casey and/or Cecil. I'd much rather get three buy-low options than one Garza-like good one.

Choo should be a target but I bet the price gets too prohibitive. Just about every team could use him.

If the defensive metrics even saw Choo as a neutral defender he'd be one of the most valuable players in the game every single year. He'd be an absolute stud LF/DH for this team. Will be interesting to see how many years he commands.

Lincecum? Why? --- Lincecum's Cost-Production isn't the best (surplus value).

Timmy ~16AAV and his production on the field says otherwise.

Currently we are 10th in the draft.

Who wants to bet we go on a run in the last few weeks and drop to the high teens. AA takes a positive spin on it saying we're hitting our stride for next year, and probably won't make too many moves!

i bet timmy gets ~3/36 and i'd totally sign up for that. He's almost at buehrle's level in terms of durability and comes with a little upside.

3/46m

Gross. I'd rather just give JJ the QO if we're throwing around that much per year.

JJ is injured, He has kept his mouth closed because he's looking for a good contract......Or he suck?

Already have the 11th pick next year. In next year's deep draft two picks in the 10-15 range would be a small silver lining to a terrible season.

Agreed. Losing isn't going to help anything.

It could foster resentment among the players and manager, could make it a less desirable destination for FA's next year, etc. We need to finish the season strong and try again next year.

Do you want to join to the Toronto blue jays? ---We have Reyes, Bautista, Encarnacion, Lawrie, Buehrle.

The free agents will focus on talent, not on the previous year's standing.

#TankNation, #TwoTop10DraftPick

I think the biggest benefit to another high pick is the slot bonus, we're talking $1.35M cap difference between the 5th and 15th picks. It's a really deep draft. There should be lots of high upside guys available in the 10-15 range. The larger the cap, the more flexibility and the better chance of landing top guys especially if someone falls.

That's a great point but I still think the benefits gained from tanking are outweighed by the detriments. Especially when you have a GM who isn't going to be rebuilding with his stated 3 year window.

I employ selective rooting. Root for Lawrie, Dickey, Buehrle and others to put together a good stretch as they'll be counted on in 2014, but root against Arencibia, Bonifacio, and the guys we don't want on the team next year at all costs. Overall I want them to finish with less than 90 losses so it's not seen as a totally abysmal season.

Not a bad route to take.

We know AA very well.

90 losses

"We are a ~70 wins team. We need to improve several areas to be a competitive team in this division" = McCann, Garza, Utley and 2 SP #4

~80 losses

"We are a ~80 wins team. We just need a slight improvement to be a competitive team in this division" = Utley and SP #4
