There we go, Masai has spoken.

RIP Mocks

Masai is a Mock nightmare. I feel like this means Lowry will be back. Not sure what I think about this.

Is this actually a reach or did people just get too obsessed with the idea of there being a clear top 4?

He likely would've been the next pick anyway... But from everything we've heard it was Cade... Then the next three... Then everyone else.

I don't think it's a reach. Pascal was a reach. Whether it was a smart decision or not might depend on the rest of the off-season. Getting elite point guards isn't easy.

He was mocked as #5, so it wasn't a huge reach.

People are just too obsessed with rankings.

Masai always takes best talent available. I actually think this is a much more interesting pick than Suggs.

Suggs fits more right now, but if Siakam gets traded for a guard then the whole roster changes.

He was going 5, so not a reach at all, but there’s a good chance he’s not as good a pro as Suggs IMO. Hope I’m wrong and Masai/Nurse make me look stupid.

Yeah so they put up the smoke screen on Suggs and maybe #5 bites and gives assets to move up one spot and then they pick who they wanted all along. Didn’t play out like that though obv

Maybe they see Barnes as a PG?

I don't think so. I see them resigning Lowry and trading Pascal, maybe for a true center. With Masai though, he'll probably surprise us all offseason.

When is Masai's contract actually up?

Not a fan of the pick, but what do I know.

Just seems to dumb to be drafting a guy with such a limited ability to score

Ya. From everything I'm hearing and reading, Barnes is a great teammate...and intangibles guy....does all the little things it takes to win....a player that coaches love. But like you said, the word on him is quite limited offensively. Could he work on his shot and improve that? Sure...but just doesn't feel like the type of player you take at 4. I hope the Raps are smarter than the rest of the world. Not sure how many other teams would've gone with Barnes over Suggs.

I thought it was already up, but there was some sort of clause in there for temporary extension based on a delayed offseason. Not sure if that was added in there later, or if MLSE has a fortune teller on payroll who predicted the pandemic messing the season schedule.

Raptors go with a formula that works reasonably well with this team. Draft rock solid defenders, hope for continued 50+ win seasons, strike when you can with a big star trade. Suggs might have been the better player, but I can see where the FO is coming from. He's not a guy to lead a team to a championship so you have to go with the player you think is the best fit for your formula. I think Raptors fans are mostly just annoyed they couldn't trade down one spot. But the problem with trading down one spot is that there is only one team you can deal with. If the Magic are fine drafting either player, you have no leverage.

Drafting raw-skilled guys with athletic body types and strong defense makes sense when you're picking late in the 1st and in the 2nd, but not high in the lottery where the difference-making scorers actually get drafted. I really hope we're all wrong about this pick, but I would have preferred if the Raptors either paid the troll toll to move up and take Mobley, or trade down and take Barnes 5th or even potentially 6th. Ugh.

They've done that once... And yes, it worked.

It's hard / impossible to prompt trading down one spot at that point in the draft without showing your hand and looking stupid. As soon as you call the other GM they know there is a decent chance you aren't thinking of taking the consensus guy.

I bet you kind of just need to hope they contact you about trading up first

Barnes is a higher ceiling prospect than Suggs and OKC was trying to trade up to 4 to pick him. And Orlando would have picked him at 5.

We're talking about a guy with a 7'3" wingspan who was guarding PGs in college (full court sometimes) and running pick and roll. That's like if Anunoby could dribble and throw lobs to big men or no look passes to corner shooters. What the hell is that.

I don't watch college ball but the highlights of Barnes... He moves exactly like Anunoby.

“the most recent team to walk away from Simmons trade talks is the Golden State Warriors. The Sixers reportedly asked for Andrew Wiggins, James Wiseman, the Nos. 7 and 14 picks in Thursday night's NBA draft and two future first-rounders, all in exchange for Simmons.”

Copy/paste from a mainstream trade rumor. I really feel like this could be true lol

I’m warming up to Scottie Barnes. Athletic, freakish length, defensive juggernaught, great standup guy, high energy, high motor, unselfish and makes plays for others. Only needs to work on shooting. Sounds exactly like a Masai pick.

Let’s hope he turns into Scottie Pippen.

People are too caught up on draft day rankings. Steph Curry was taken 7th, behind Rubio and Flynn. Giannis was taken 15th, Kawhi was taken 15th.

And lots of hyped guys at #4 that busted out. Not being a Raps fan, I can objectively say you have to assume Raps saw something they didn’t like with Suggs, or they did see with Barnes. No too dissimilar to the recent Jays trade. Except Raps have better track record evaluating talent

Raptors “insider” stated on reddit post about Jalen Suggs:

Basically the man couldn’t shoot. He had the worst shooting drill out of all 1-on-0 workouts (they worked out about 10, including Bouknight who said he didn’t work out with us for some reason?? Bouknight had the best shooting drill of all by far).

Just was totally flat. It was so bad and he was so worked up about it that they called the workout short and told him to come back the next day, deven though they already had another guy coming in the next day (jalen johnson).

That basically never happens. Didn’t do great on the second chance either.

Scottie killed it. Beginning to end. Great workout, charmed them with his personality, shot the leather off the ball. They just loved him.

I didn’t want to say anything about the bad workout bc I didn’t want that to get out, in case the FO was trying to trade the pick.
