glory Old-Timey Member Posted February 17, 2020 Posted February 17, 2020 MLB should adopt the NBA all star game format of picking teams. Have the two leading vote getters in the AL and NL go on live TV and pick their rosters like it was a fantasy draft. League doesn't matter. First round is just picking the players voted in, last round is picking the reserves. It would be a good way to market stars and get some original content for a network like ESPN who likes this sort of stuff.

glory Old-Timey Member Posted February 17, 2020 Posted February 17, 2020 Sorry, Rob Manfred is allergic to good ideas Yeah Manfred is definitely too rigid to be in his current role. The NBA isn't perfect, but Adam Silver is never satisfied with status quo, and is always trying new things to spice up the league. Manfred hasn't really done anything aside from tiny cosmetic changes to speed up the game, but nothing as far as trying to reach more fans. A live draft like the NBA has would be great for baseball. Have Trout and Bellinger, or whoever, have 30 minutes to have a live draft and explain their picks. Would be a great way to expose their personalities to a mainstream audience. Or hell, do USA versus the World as the All Star game (guarantee Silver tries this within the next 5 years). It's just sad that the NBA is growing and still willing to change things, while MLB is losing mainstream relevance but wants to avoid change completely. Silver is only a few years younger than Manfred so it's not even a "get someone younger" issue. It's a "get someone smarter" issue.

Another factor is also that a large part of baseball's appeal is how often it references its past, which is why MLB tries to maintain some continuity by not changing too many rules, so that comparisons can go on forever between players over 100-year time spans. I'm not saying I agree, but that's part of why they're so adverse. The NBA doesn't have that baggage/cachet (however you wish to see it). It is such a young league, and so many of their fans are young themselves, that it has no reason to make 80s or 90s basketball historically relevant to today's game.

Yeah the average age of a baseball viewer is late 50's I think, so they definitely run the risk of alienating their existing fanbase if they try to appeal to a different one. Likely not as much of an issue with the NBA since they have a younger fanbase. Still, it's adapt or die time for MLB. Society is changing and they need to evolve with it. Silver changing the format of the all star game multiple times and even adding a mid season tournament next year when the game is at the peak of its mainstream popularity just shows how creative that league is. They are willing to try and fail rather than stick with the status quo. Hell, look at the the NBA game today versus 15 years ago. The Pistons and Spurs were having games that had scores of 84-78. Now the game is completely different. Some times you have to push tradition aside from the sake of the game's health, and for some reason baseball views itself like church. That's not going to age well. I hope if/when Manfred is gone (hopefully soon) they get a more progressive commish.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted February 25, 2020 Posted February 25, 2020 Anyone see that celebration of life for Kobe and Gigi? Kobe's wife broke me man, so sad. She's a champ. Big game tonight hey fellas! Go Raps!

Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted March 4, 2020 Posted March 4, 2020 Is the game choppy AF, for you guys?
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted March 4, 2020 Posted March 4, 2020 Is the game choppy AF, for you guys? Seems okay for me.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted March 4, 2020 Posted March 4, 2020 Seems okay for me. Worked for me fine after the commercial, Suns can't keep shooting like this can they? lol
Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted March 4, 2020 Posted March 4, 2020 Also important that Boston lost a game they shouldn't have lost so that makes up for the Hornets loss.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted March 4, 2020 Posted March 4, 2020 This, Spike Lee and Knicks fight is entertainment.
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted March 6, 2020 Posted March 6, 2020 Houston keeps jacking up 3's and missing. They're 3 for 31 now.

Chappy Community Moderator Posted March 10, 2020 Posted March 10, 2020 This is getting ridiculous with the injuries.
dineke Old-Timey Member Posted March 10, 2020 Posted March 10, 2020 we keep trotting out mccaw making it 4v5 on offense. it's getting ridiculous now
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted March 10, 2020 Posted March 10, 2020 Guys falling like flies today, sheeeeeeit! Oh, he's back, sweet.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted March 10, 2020 Posted March 10, 2020 we keep trotting out mccaw making it 4v5 on offense. it's getting ridiculous now If McCaw is getting rotation minutes in the playoffs, I don't think this team is getting out of the 2nd round. They can't afford to have a blackhole like him getting 20+ minutes when every possession matters in a half court setting. He can't shoot, dribble, create, pass, rebound, or do just about anything even at an average level. He is bad at just about everything. It is baffling how he even gets minutes, much less is a rotation player in Nurse's mind.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted March 10, 2020 Posted March 10, 2020 Look at every advanced metric. McCaw is one of the worst players in basketball, and I wish I was exaggerating because it seems like he'll be getting minutes regardless. If you don't think that will hurt in the playoffs when the Raptors can't abuse teams with fastbreak points as much as they do in the regular season, then you are in for a shock. Teams will ignore McCaw in a half court set. It will be 4x5 every time. I hope Nurse has something up his sleeve.

If we're injured like this in the playoffs, we have much bigger problems.

I think Nurse said McCaw is part of the 8 man rotation when everyone is healthy. I think he plays over TD in the playoffs even if everyone is healthy, but I really really hope I'm wrong.
dineke Old-Timey Member Posted March 10, 2020 Posted March 10, 2020 TD gets benched after a bad half, mccaw doesn't get benched after a bad season

I think he plays over TD in the playoffs even if everyone is healthy, but I really really hope I'm wrong. Even if he is, he probably doesn't see the floor much. Unless you're a player like Harrell or Lou Williams, if you aren't in the starting five, you aren't seeing many minutes in the playoffs.

Unless you're a player like Harrell or Lou Williams, if you aren't in the starting five, you aren't seeing many minutes in the playoffs. FVV-Lowry-OG-Siakam-Gasol Norm-Ibaka-McCaw That's probably the playoff rotation. If McCaw gets 5 minutes or less, then you're right it is not a big deal. If he's getting 15-25 minutes, then we have a problem. I don't think people understand how bad of a player he is, and how critical possessions/minutes are in the playoffs. Even Jack was getting on McCaw on commentary tonight. When the Raptors announcers turn on you....
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted March 12, 2020 Posted March 12, 2020 FFS, they couldn't have announced it a little earlier? There goes a few lineups.
