jays_fever Old-Timey Member Posted October 31, 2013 Posted October 31, 2013 Raptors won tonight...? I didn't know the season started tonight Yea I was flipping back between the game and the WS. The raptors were pretty bad for the most part
theblujay Verified Member Posted October 31, 2013 Posted October 31, 2013 Gay and Derozan were terrible. Hansbrough and Fields looked great. Ross was decent, JV was decent. Their offense looked terrible for the most part. Almost every shot came with 5> on the shot clock.
havok24 Old-Timey Member Posted October 31, 2013 Posted October 31, 2013 I don't watch basketball nor do I care about it, but why do Raptors fans hate DeRozan? The reason I ask is because every basketball conversation I overhear at work/school is about how much DeRozan sucks and how they need to get the "bum" off the team. Is he like in that mold of Bozak/JPA in terms of awfulness? I'm guessing he just chucks up a lot of shots with little to no efficiency?

Poor defender, poor re-bounder, doesnt utilize ball screens effectively, cant pass worth a dime. He gets to the line at a good rate, but thats about it.
mitchf Verified Member Posted October 31, 2013 Posted October 31, 2013 I'm not sure how you can come away from last night and say Gay looked "terrible". He pretty much locked down the 4th as calmly as you'd expect from a 19 million dollar man. Now is he worth that? No, but he played well last night.
dineke Old-Timey Member Posted October 31, 2013 Posted October 31, 2013 He wasn't terrible last night, he played exactly to expectations... 19 points on 18 shots = mediocre just like the raptors have always been.
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted October 31, 2013 Posted October 31, 2013 It was the first game of the season. Both teams looked exactly like they were playing the first game. I can't believe how many people around here can possibly complain so much even when the teams win.
dineke Old-Timey Member Posted November 1, 2013 Posted November 1, 2013 This year is not the time to win.
jays_fever Old-Timey Member Posted November 1, 2013 Posted November 1, 2013 This year is not the time to win. They're to good to finish bottom 5, or even 8. Making the playoffs and growing their team during next off season will be more beneficial than trading away guys like Lowry and Amir to improve their pick.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted November 1, 2013 Posted November 1, 2013 Making the playoffs and growing their team during next off season will be more beneficial than trading away guys like Lowry and Amir to improve their pick. Nah. The first 10 picks of the draft are significantly more valuable than those two.
jays_fever Old-Timey Member Posted November 1, 2013 Posted November 1, 2013 Nah. The first 10 picks of the draft are significantly more valuable than those two. The 6th pick lets say for argument sake is more valuable than the 15th and Amir? If thats what you are arguing, youre nuts.

Lowry, and Gay are in their prime and Derozan has barely improved his efficiency since his rookie year. The only guy on the team that is young and on the upswing is Valanciunas. This team is maxed out and has a ceiling of a 6th seed and winning one series if they get really really really lucky. Also, Lowry is a great candidate to be traded because he's coming up on FA. If they trade Lowry and Gay, they're a great candidate for a bottom five finish.

E: ^what he said
dineke Old-Timey Member Posted November 1, 2013 Posted November 1, 2013 Getting an 8th seed and getting their butts handed to them is sure great for growth. Milwaukee suuuuuuuuuuuuuuuure has benefited from that over the years.

Grow as in continue to obtain assets and build the team, not just trade away players for the sake of doing so. You arent going to outank the Phoenix's and Orlando's of the league, it aint happening. Loaded draft or not, you trade away the few decent players we have, and well we're back to square one if it doesnt land us Wiggins or Parker. Tanking's a great strategy if you have literally nothing on your team and its a guarantee to get a top 3 pick.

Milwaukee suuuuuuuuuuuuuuuure has benefited from that over the years. I feel so bad for them. If they're too bad, they'll get relocated, but they have to be bad to be good. Catch 22. You arent going to outank the Phoenix's and Orlando's of the league, it aint happening. You know that a.) we don't have to to get a great player, as being a bottom 10 team will get us an excellent player, and b.) that there's a lottery, right..?
dineke Old-Timey Member Posted November 1, 2013 Posted November 1, 2013 Who's saying to trade them for nothing? So what, you just want to sign Lowry to a long term contract and stick with this maxed out and mediocre core for the next few years? gross If you can trade lowry for a draft pick and Gay for a package like the raptors gave up (Ed Davis), take it and run. Now you have gained a couple of assets and maybe more importantly, cap space in the off season to add more assets.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted November 1, 2013 Posted November 1, 2013 Gay for a package like the raptors gave up (Ed Davis), take it and run. MKG and Bennett are intriguing for me.
dineke Old-Timey Member Posted November 1, 2013 Posted November 1, 2013 Also, if you can trade Derozan for anything good, why the f*** not? He's terrible and making 9 mil a year. The only players on this team worth keeping is JV and Amir.
dineke Old-Timey Member Posted November 1, 2013 Posted November 1, 2013 MKG and Bennett are intriguing for me. Cavs wont trade Bennett one year after taking him 1st overall.

What do you possibly think the Raptors are going to get for Gay and Derozan, nothing. Also if you trade Derozan, that does nothing for helping them tank. Keep Lowry until you have a back up plan in mind. You can build a team like the Pacers have with mid round packs and keeping your core intact.

Yep trading away what little we already have is a lock to get us a excellent player, because every top 10 pick is a excellent player, but we cant get anything at 15? Sucking for 3 years= success down the road. We had one of the top players in the league, surrounded by crap and you want to replicate that all over just because tanking is considering the "norm" for mediocre teams.

You can build a team like the Pacers have with mid round packs and keeping your core intact. Nothing based on...? Andrea Barganani got a couple of draft picks... and it's about clearing their contracts more than anything. Just last week, there was an article on the interest in Derozan around the league and just LAST YEAR, Memphis got Ed Davis for Gay. And why not get something for Lowry when he's probably going to leave in FA anyway.
jays_fever Old-Timey Member Posted November 1, 2013 Posted November 1, 2013 Nothing substantial that is going to help us down the road. Trade Derozan if you can get rid of him, I just dont see anyone touching that contract unless we're getting an equally poor one coming back. Trade Gay if you can get rid of him as well, I just dont see the point in trading Amir or Lowry just because people want to embrace this tanking strategy and claim it will magically help us down the road. To be clear if we can get good young players for Amir or Lowry sure, send them packing ( and I love amir), but if the purpose is for upgrading our pick, which is what the general consensus is online, then that's ridiculous. Like ive stated before, theres no out tanking the bottom 3-4 teams in the league right now.

I actually didn't watch the 4th cuz of the Leafs game, but the Gay I saw chucking up shots in the third quarter was pretty bad.
theblujay Verified Member Posted November 1, 2013 Posted November 1, 2013 The only person it makes sense to tank for is Wiggins. I know it's a deep draft, but I don't think anyone outside the top 3 is worth giving up what we have. And it's too hard to guarantee Wiggins, so for that reason I'm for trying to make the playoffs.

I take this back. Gay is absolutely horrendous. But Dwanye Casey is ten times worse. I've never seen a worse offense than the Raps right now. Just isos and chucked shots. Casey is abysmal. Blow it up, time to trade Gay and Lowry before their value drops too far. Wigginsornothing.

dineke Old-Timey Member Posted November 2, 2013 Posted November 2, 2013 lol I was wrong, Rudy Gay is the perfect Tank Commander!
