Because he started off the game as the DH and Lind was at 1st before he left with an injury. You can't move him from DH to 1st without losing the DH spot. Thole was there out of necessity.

If your DH is moved to play defense,the pitcher must hit in his spot or that spot in the order is an automatic out. I think?
