digiblader Verified Member Posted June 24, 2013 Posted June 24, 2013 Here's some interesting tidbits on catching around baseball. http://espn.go.com/mlb/stats/fielding/_/position/c/sort/catcherERA/order/false Love him or hate him JP Arencibia has done a good job with our pitchers--a 3.79 CERA, middle of the pack(for starting catchers).(Russel Martin of the Pirates is #1, followed by Yadier Molina of the Cardinals). Keep in mind about the bad April--things have improved since then. Matt Wieters, who we just saw, has a 4.69 CERA, especially with the bad pitchers he has to catch. And here's a sign Boston is in trouble--Jarrod Saltalamacchia is one of the worst catchers in baseball, with a 4.24 CERA..unfortunately, his defensive caddy, David Ross and his 3.08 CERA, isn't due back anytime soon(concussion)--and considering this is his 2nd concussion of the year, you've got to wonder if he ends up retiring like Cardinals manager Mike Matheny. Don't expect Ryan Lavarnway to help either--he's not much better.. but it's a SSS. Chris Ianetta of the Angels is near the bottom as well. However, is CERA even accurate in measuring success for pitchers?
Metallijay Verified Member Posted June 24, 2013 Posted June 24, 2013 Can we just ban this f***ing idiot? lol, perfect response.
digiblader Verified Member Posted June 24, 2013 Author Posted June 24, 2013 Then explain how Russell Martin and Yadier Molina are so valuable for their teams? Game calling is important in the success of pitchers.
digiblader Verified Member Posted June 24, 2013 Author Posted June 24, 2013 Sorry.. I was just thinking about how those teams have decent staff, and teams like Boston, Tampa Bay and us(in April) were so cruddy..
GD Old-Timey Member Posted June 24, 2013 Posted June 24, 2013 Then explain how Russell Martin and Yadier Molina are so valuable for their teams? Game calling is important in the success of pitchers. Sure as hell not through catcher ERA, that's for sure.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted June 24, 2013 Posted June 24, 2013 Wait, in the OP he called it CERA. Isn't there some stat like Component ERA that's actually CERA and not catcher ERA?
Captain Adama Old-Timey Member Posted June 24, 2013 Posted June 24, 2013 Wait, in the OP he called it CERA. Isn't there some stat like Component ERA that's actually CERA and not catcher ERA? Does it even matter? We all know what this dumbf*** was talking about.
digiblader Verified Member Posted June 24, 2013 Author Posted June 24, 2013 You know any better measurements for pitchers to determine how good or bad they are?
Dr Negative Verified Member Posted June 24, 2013 Posted June 24, 2013 Catcher ERA is stupid but I've just figured out who JPA reminds me of, Mark from the Room. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lfUj4QJGnok I could actually picture JPA saying something like that on twitter.
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted June 24, 2013 Posted June 24, 2013 You know any better measurements for pitchers to determine how good or bad they are? Obvious troll is obvious. Unless of course you are actually pat tabler in which case it's very likel you believe that catchers era is a real thing.
Metallijay Verified Member Posted June 24, 2013 Posted June 24, 2013 Jp has turned josh johnson into a low end starter so far.... Calling 95% of pitchers away it this level when the pitcher throws 96 MPH is pure retard. Throw to the same location at this level 85% of the time any major league club will hit you. JP and OP = idiots.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted June 24, 2013 Posted June 24, 2013 You know any better measurements for pitchers to determine how good or bad they are? I This Too good. I have no words. Just a slow clap. http://youchew.net/wiki/images/f/fd/Slow-Clap.gif
Hawkguy Verified Member Posted June 24, 2013 Posted June 24, 2013 I love Arencibia. You can't pick your favourite players - they just happen. Always liked him, always will. He's not the best catcher in the world, but he's not the worst. I definitely prefer seeing him than most of the catchers I've had to deal with in my life for the Jays.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted June 24, 2013 Posted June 24, 2013 I This Too good. I have no words. Just a slow clap. He liked this... bro this wasn't a compliment lol.
digiblader Verified Member Posted June 24, 2013 Author Posted June 24, 2013 Hey, it could be worse--Boston hasn't had a decent catcher since Varitek retired. Salty has never had decent dWAR numbers as a starter. (JPA has been positive every year on dWAR since he was appointed the starter in 2011.)

The. s***.
Hawkguy Verified Member Posted June 24, 2013 Posted June 24, 2013 Bud. Darrin Fletcher. He. Was. The. s***. Yes maybe. I f***ing hated O'Brien and Zaun.
digiblader Verified Member Posted June 24, 2013 Author Posted June 24, 2013 And his trade value is nil because of his poor defense and blocking skills, according to scouts. He's basically a DH/1B playing catcher, just like Mike Napoli was.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted June 24, 2013 Posted June 24, 2013 Nope Hey, he's at least making an effort lol. Fletcher was great. So was Zaun - I loved watching Zaun play. f***ing incredible pitch framing.
backontop Verified Member Posted June 24, 2013 Posted June 24, 2013 Give me a catcher that can bat 300 and hit 30 home runs, pitchers don't need to be babied by the catcher now these days, if I was a major league pitcher, I'd tell him just to catch whatever I throw and that I don't need you flashing signs at me, I'll throw what I want.......you just worry about catching, and I'll worry about pitching.
digiblader Verified Member Posted June 24, 2013 Author Posted June 24, 2013 Well.. that's not easy to find. Not everyone can be Joe Mauer, AJ Pierzynski, Buster Posey, etc.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted June 24, 2013 Posted June 24, 2013 I didn't even know that. Zaun was just a badass - switch-hitting OBP fiend who walked more than he struck out and played like a true dirtbag. He hit a dinger at one of the first games I went to. Loved him ever since. Was thrilled when we hired him to be an on-air personality. Little did I know what was to come.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted June 24, 2013 Posted June 24, 2013 Give me a catcher that can bat 300 and hit 30 home runs WOW, BECAUSE THERE ARE SO MANY OF THOSE FLOATING AROUND. Lol I don't like this guy

Give me a defensive catcher with a good OBP. When was the last time a catcher hit 300 and swung for 30 home runs? Joe Mauer that one fluke year?

GD Old-Timey Member Posted June 24, 2013 Posted June 24, 2013 LOL, players who did this last year: Fielder, Trout, McCutchen, Cano, Beltre, Braun, Miggy The only ones that came close were Posey and Yadi, but yeah ,let's just scoop 'em up!
GD Old-Timey Member Posted June 24, 2013 Posted June 24, 2013 You're too uptight bro, there's a lot of value in entertainment. Meh, I normally enjoy his posts (that I can read) for the entertainment value, but it's midnight and I came to the realization I actually have to go to school tomorrow so I'm in a bad mood haha.
