Deadpool Old-Timey Member Posted June 23, 2013 Posted June 23, 2013 JPR was an ok GM... said some stupid stuff. AA is a fine GM... still has a bit to learn, great negotiator. JPR built a team that made the playoffs multiple times during his tenure as GM, as evidenced by the fact that in 2006 (IIRC) the Jays had a better record than the eventual world series winners... AA lost a lot of my respect with the Dickey trade... I'm still willing to give him the benefit of the doubt (and I prefer his drafting strategy to JPRs any day of the week), but he's definitely not "the Ninja" anymore.

His greatest Ninja move yet will be convincing everyone he's not a ninja.... Then wam bam.
flafson Verified Member Posted June 23, 2013 Posted June 23, 2013 Dickey may still pan out, too early to tell, we got him for 3 years.
Deadpool Old-Timey Member Posted June 23, 2013 Posted June 23, 2013 Dickey may still pan out, too early to tell, we got him for 3 years. I have very little faith in a 38 year old "turning it around" Edit: And even if he does, we overpaid to get him.

As GM JPR approved the angry bird uniforms. A GM does more than just make player moves. He was not a good GM. His marketing and ad agency hires were horrible too.

fireballW Verified Member Posted June 23, 2013 Posted June 23, 2013 how can anyone think JPR was even half as good a gm as AA . The guy was an Arrogant, Mouthy son of a bitch who thought he was better than his own scouting dept. Exactly. Enough hearing about JP. People don't even realize at all what they are talking about. Only people who live in a fantasy land where all FA want to sign in Toronto and every team is willing to trade their top players for B prospects could be upset. Our farm system is as good, or better than when AA got here and our team is light years better. So where is the problem? It is like the biggest argument against him is he made our minor league system too good, too fast (from bottom five to top 2 or 3 in a few years) that people got too attached. That and people here are complete dorks and get upset when guys who are maybe around our top 10 prospects are getting traded for legit major league pitching depth like Happ. If AA wasn't here instead of JP, Wells would still be here, or if JP traded him he probably would have ate half the contract. Jose would have never been resigned most likely because of Wells money so he wouldn't even be here. The Scott Rolen for EE and Stewart trade was AA's trade. He found it, lined it up, negotiated it and then plopped it down in front of Ricciardi, signed, sealed and delivered. This was talked about by JP himself, if nobody else remembers this info, I don't really care. I feel like AA also brought Bautista to Ricciardi, but am not as 100% as I am about EE. EE, Bautista and Reyes would not be here if not for AA. Ricciardi would not have drafted enough high upside guys to make half the trades AA has to bolster this team. Plus by the time it left it seemed more than a few GMs wanted nothing to do with him. Almost guarantee we wouldn't have the nice options on Lind either. JP had what? 7 years? And didn't accomplish close to as much as AA has. Give it another year and our farm system is probably going to be top 15 again too. We have a team that was widely considered one of the favourites on paper to go to the world series. People are ridiculous. Ya ya tldr. I don't care. This post was for me not any of you!
Deadpool Old-Timey Member Posted June 23, 2013 Posted June 23, 2013 Almost guarantee we wouldn't have the nice options on Lind either. Not going to go through that wall of text point by point, but here's pretty much the easiest thing to refute... Lind's contract was signed in 2010. If you're not going to give JP credit for that, you can't give AA credit for anything, because you have to assume that it's his underlings doing everything for him.

Can't compare JP was working with a thin payroll................
Metallijay Verified Member Posted June 23, 2013 Posted June 23, 2013 JP had a chance at 120 Mil payroll just like AA got. So yes I can compare. Still can't different times, different players available, AA's teams have not done anything yet either.
Deadpool Old-Timey Member Posted June 23, 2013 Posted June 23, 2013 Best record under JPR - 87-75 Best record under AA - 85-77 qed So far, apples to apples (generally) comparison, JPR has put the best team on the field. (and an 87 win team is very good by any definition).
imsorry4beatinU Verified Member Posted June 23, 2013 Posted June 23, 2013 If we really had JPR as a GM. Would we even have this conversation of contending? I don't think so! He was brutal as our GM and I don't get how people could defend that. I think everyone is just mad at AA for the Dickey, Happ trade and countless veterinnnnnnn presences he signs. I hated Dickey trade from the start, giving up 2 legit prospect and 1 future legit prospect for a 38 year old knuckleball pitcher didn't make sense. He has made some brutal trades in the last year but he has given us a team that could contend right now. I would take AA 10/10 times over JPR anytime any day.

ManOnThird Verified Member Posted June 23, 2013 Posted June 23, 2013 I was never trying to defend JPR, but somehow amidst firing all the scouts and being an arrogant sob, he still managed to build a team that won more games than anything AA has done. And that was during the years when Boston and New York were dominating, and reaching the playoffs was essentially impossible. Plus in his own words, he brought more prospects to the majors than any other working GM over the same time span (haha).

True, JPR could never have built a farm system capable of trading for any big names.

It's true that NY and Boston were better then, but the flip side is that TB and Baltimore were pretty bad and as I said above, almost every GM, including AA, inherits players acquired by previous management/s. Anyway....
