Olerud363 Old-Timey Member Posted June 14, 2013 Author Posted June 14, 2013 Luck, pain tolerance, genetics, conditioning, nutrition, fitness, fatigue etc. What worries me about Lawrie is genetics and... the x-factor I guess. He's out of control. Every play you have to hold your breath and hope he doesn't crash into something. Nutrition?? Looks in good shape. But who knows. Eating crap, red-bulls, and whatever else he puts in his body... that may not be good.
SantosLHalper21 Verified Member Posted June 14, 2013 Posted June 14, 2013 In my mind, Brett Lawrie is still going to be a top five AL third baseman when all is said and done. The problem I'm seeing with Brett is simple. It's timing. He missed nearly all the training camp and didn't really get started untl nearly May. The pitchers were rounding into form and Brett was still getting used to the game. Also, his stance at the plate really needs to be toned down. He almost looks as if he's rocking back and forth in the box and constantly tapping his front foot. My thoughts are if he calms himself down in the box, and just works on one timing mechanism instead of 100, he'll get back to where he was at pre-injuries. Right now though, his stance is a complete mess.

Back for 5 weeks now another x week vacation... and we have no idea how long x is... but at this point we assume this break is atleast a month... he comes back, he'll either miss almost 2 months (if he spends a couple of weeks in the minors) or he comes back with the same timing problems. At this point IF he doesn't have another injury he can be back and effective by August (assuming he comes back July then needs some time to round into form). So allready 2013 is looking like at most we get 2 months of effective Lawrie... and thats if things break right from here.
Wilnercibia Verified Member Posted June 14, 2013 Posted June 14, 2013 First off, "allready" is not a word. Otherwise you might have a good comparison here... Lawrie certainly has the talent to turn into this level of player, but I doubt he has the moral fibre to do so. If only he could of kept doing what he was doing when he was first called up, so patient at the plate, waiting for his pitch, taking a walk. It's extremely disappointing that his ego has gotten the better of his game. First off, you forgot a space after the Exclamation point in the area bolded. That's all.
Captain Adama Old-Timey Member Posted June 14, 2013 Posted June 14, 2013 What about Paul Molitor... His younger years were way before my time... As I've heard the story he went from inconsistent injury prone coke-head to the durable and quiet leader we saw in the 90s. It was a remarkable transformation. I can't see Lawrie ever being as quiet and calm as Molitor seemed. But I hope in his own way he grows up. Even during Molitor's injury years he still hit when he was healthy.
