TwistedLogic Old-Timey Member Posted July 12, 2013 Posted July 12, 2013 I'm not sure whether I'd be happier if we punted the pick on purpose or if it just happened that way (Caper seems to think we punted, or that's the impression he's leaving). I guess intent lends itself to praise or blame. We can't praise their move of punting if that wasn't their intention, conversely we can't blame them for picking Bickford if their strategy all along was to punt the pick. I'll be interested to hear what really happened. Unfortunately we probably won't know the full story, but my assumption is that when you overdraft a guy (who, despite his improved stuff, only soared after one excellent start) and then offer him 3 million dollars, you're trying to get him signed. Even if they knew that he wouldn't sign, the mere chance that he would gave credence to their strategy. They could have went with the idea that Bickford-or-2014-Draft was a better option overall than Shipley or Crawford or McGuire. There really isn't anything we can say to that because four teams after the Jays followed suit in passing Shipley. I see it as a very well managed pick, and actually see it as opposite of the Beede pick (despite us getting a good guy like Stroman for it) because 2011 was seen as an elite draft class and 2012 was seen to be significantly weaker.

I just think they were not that worried about him not signing. I think they are very comfortable with the 11th pick next year.

Yes, that was likely their mindset. Crawford and McGuire have been good in the early going too, so that stings a little more (although I wasn't a big Crawford or McGuire guy either).
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted July 12, 2013 Posted July 12, 2013 Maybe we should stop crediting AA with the Doc trade? d'Arnaud Taylor = bust -> Wallace (bust) -> Gose (looking kind of busty) Drabek = bust This

The way I had interpreted your comment "I like the move" was that they punted the pick on purpose rather than as a by product of circumstance. It's hard to praise someone when something happens that was beyond the scope of what they expected or planned.

Literally the biggest hit or miss prospect ever... Could have been Carl Crawford in his prime or working at Burger King... OK maybe not that drastic, but I never had high hopes for his bat progressing enough to be an everyday'er
8D Verified Member Posted July 12, 2013 Posted July 12, 2013 Gose is only 22 years old. He still has all of his tools and can still figure it out. Heck he might even figure it out at 27 years old after hopping around the league.

Ehjays Verified Member Posted July 12, 2013 Posted July 12, 2013 Except that...um.... it IS. I'm starting to get tired of typing this (already three times in the last thirty minutes) so I'm going to post this one last time and then I don't give a s*** if you guys comprehend it or not. If the Jays fail to sign Bickford in 2013, their 2014 pick will STILL BE PROTECTED. STILL BE PROTECTED. STILL BE PROTECTED. "Teams get an extra year of protection for compensation picks for failure to sign draftees from the first three rounds. For example, the Blue Jays get the 22nd pick in 2012 after not signing No. 21 overall choice Tyler Beede in 2011. If Toronto can't come to terms with the compensation selection, it would get another one in 2013." Quote taken from HERE: http://www.baseballamerica.com/blog/draft/2011/11/more-draft-details-from-the-cba/ Great so with the way we're going then we should have 3 1st round picks in 2015
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted July 12, 2013 Posted July 12, 2013 And he's not even running well - 11 steals and 10 CS. This concerns me the most. Stealing bases should be a main part of his game. If he can't steal, he is basically Hechavarria as a CF.
8D Verified Member Posted July 12, 2013 Posted July 12, 2013 Of course. But there's no denying that this season is just a colossal disappointment. I mean, a 74 wRC+ at 22 while repeating a level? That's just shockingly bad. And he's not even running well - 11 steals and 10 CS. oh f*** yeah, lol.
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted July 12, 2013 Posted July 12, 2013 Are we sure it's the 11th pick next year and not the 10th? Technically I think our pick this year was 9b (ie, 9th pick but we were bumped due to someone not signing with another team the year before). The one spot may not change the other arguments, but what COULD make a difference is that the pick at 10 I believe would be protected if we signed a type A free agent.

(Since Gose will probably be working there next year...)
flafson Verified Member Posted July 12, 2013 Posted July 12, 2013 It should be protected because they say top 10 are protected. We had number 10 so whatever you get next time should also be protected.

EdelweissBouquet Verified Member Posted July 12, 2013 Posted July 12, 2013 The Jays farm system ranked as one of the best before the trades. Not it wasn't, we were behind more than just a few teams.
EdelweissBouquet Verified Member Posted July 12, 2013 Posted July 12, 2013 If every drafted player offered a sizable sum of money were to not turn it down, where would the players ever get negotiating leverage? Negotiation leverage becomes redundant in a win win situation for both parties. This would be a good thing.
havok24 Old-Timey Member Posted July 12, 2013 Posted July 12, 2013 Not it wasn't, we were behind more than just a few teams. The farm was like top 5 prior to the offseason trades.
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted July 12, 2013 Author Posted July 12, 2013 Worst draft ever. AA is a genius
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted July 12, 2013 Author Posted July 12, 2013 Jimmy Callis On Thursday, Toronto GM Alex Anthopoulos told local reporters that he didn’t expect his club would sign Bickford. He didn’t elaborate much on why, other than to say that the issue wasn’t financial. A Cal State Fullerton recruit, Bickford reportedly had a $4.25 million price tag before the draft. The No. 10 selection carries an assigned value of $2,921,400, though Toronto also has saved $1,773,520 on its other signings in the first 10 rounds. The Blue Jays could pay Bickford as much as $5,014,830 without forfeiting a 2014 first-round pick for going more than 5 percent over their bonus pool of $6,398,200. Other sources involved with the negotiations shared Anthopoulos’ pessimism. None of them, on or off the record, intimated that a physical issue was involved. It’s unclear what led to the impasse or if there’s any real possibility it can be resolved by the deadline. Of the 316 players drafted in the top 10 rounds, only nine of them have failed to agree to terms. After Bickford, the highest selections are a pair of Marlins: San Francisco prep righthander Matt Krook (supplemental first round) and Orlando high school outfielder Ben DeLuzio (third round). The Blue Jays have more money left in their pool than any team, and what should be more than enough to strike deals with Missouri high school lefthander Jake Brentz (11th round, No. 80 on the BA 500) and California prep first baseman Rowdy Tellez (30th round, No. 59 on the BA 500). Toronto appears closer to a deal with Tellez than with Brentz.

DuckDuckGose Verified Member Posted July 12, 2013 Posted July 12, 2013 AA needs to lock up Tellez and Brentz. 7 hours to save this draft.
flafson Verified Member Posted July 12, 2013 Posted July 12, 2013 If it's a matter of money, it will be done cause he can offer 1mil each or 2mil to one of them. If it's not about money, then god knows what will happen.

We got the best player in the draft in the name of KING KALFUS We just need one superstar in the draft to make it successful. Looks very promising to me...
imsorry4beatinU Verified Member Posted July 12, 2013 Posted July 12, 2013 The Kalfus thing is getting old really fast. It was cute for a couple weeks now its just getting dumb. your missing the boat

Brentz AND Tellez would move it in to mediocre territory, just one doesn't bump the needle though IMO.
