Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted June 10, 2013 Author Posted June 10, 2013 Evan Smith van Smith isn't wasting anytime in starting his pro baseball career. The Toronto Blue Jays selected the former Mary Montgomery pitcher in the fourth round of the 2013 First-Year Player Draft on Thursday. He told AL.com that he will fly to Tampa, Fla., at 4 a.m. Friday to sign his contract. "I'm excited," he said. "This is what I've been waiting on and working on my whole life. I'm just ready to get started with the next step." Daniel Lietz Heartland Community College pitcher Dan Lietz (Homewood-Flossmoor) was drafted on Friday by the Toronto Blue Jays in the fifth round. Lietz, who just completed his freshman year, will sign and report to the Blue Jays Gulf Coast League team in Florida. "It hasn't sunk in yet and probably won't until Tuesday when I report," Lietz said. "It's pretty exciting." Tim Mayza “It is a lot to take in,” Mayza said. “I’m trying to chase the dream of playing in the big leagues. Every kid playing baseball has wishes of seeing their name up on that board. I’m happy that it happened, but I know there is quite a bit of hard work ahead and a long way to go until I reach my goal of the big leagues.” Scouts filled the stands for nearly all of Mayza’s 15 starts during the season, and there were plenty of teams interested. After Mayza slipped out of the 10th round, which ended on Friday, the Blue Jays called him know they intended to pick him early Saturday. “From the previous day, I had an idea Toronto was interested,” Mayza said. “When I got picked, it was an excited feeling. Since then, it’s pretty much been everyone calling, texting and tweeting me. “I knew Toronto has a great farm system and is big in player development,” he added. “They’re good at developing young pitchers. It’s good in terms of my development and getting the most of my ability.

Deadpool Old-Timey Member Posted June 10, 2013 Posted June 10, 2013 Hollon signed for slot? I was expecting underslot so we could sign guys like Brentz After reading that article, I'm not 100% sure that the author isn't just looking at the slot value and assumed that's what he signed for. "Taken by the Blue Jays with the 47th pick, the Woodford Co. fireballer will sign a pro contract and pick up a bonus of more than $1.1 million." Maybe he signed for slot, but I wouldn't take that article as proof of that.
ace3113 Verified Member Posted June 10, 2013 Posted June 10, 2013 I'm not sure if Hollon signed for slot or not. That article seems misleading. It has no source (even an anonymous one). It just states what the slot value for that pick is and assumes he's getting it. On the other hand I hope this report was just a smoke screen from Bickford's camp cause it sounds pretty ridiculous. http://www.baseballamerica.com/draft/royals-draft-pick-switch-gambit-pays-off/ Bickford had a reported $4.25 million price tag, and his camp would not allow Royals officials to meet with him.

Well, the Jays did say they were willing to go over slot with their first pick so it could be accurate. I find it hard to believe Bickford would risk turning down slot though. He can't go up very many spots, but he could go down a hell of a lot in the future. Even if he does turn us down, we get the 10th pick next year in a deep draft so it's all good.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted June 10, 2013 Posted June 10, 2013 I heard Bickford is saying that he deserves $800K overslot, just like Giolito got. I'm guessing they will have somewhere close to that left over and offer Brentz $900K if they don't sign Bickford. Jays can probably counter with a Max Fried comp (who got $3M and had a similar commitment UCLA for Fried, Cal State Fullerton for Bickford) and even argue that Fried gets a lefty bonus and try and get Bickford to sign slot.

Losing Bickford and +2.9 million of the total amount is a blow in the face. AA is a cheater GM and I trust his cunning. No doubt there is a pre-deal under the table or deferred money. lol

TheHurl Site Manager Posted June 10, 2013 Posted June 10, 2013 http://www.truebluefan.com/news/one-on-one-with-clinton-hollon/ Jays must have had a pre-draft deal cause after reading this interview from two days ago they had him over a barrel as he would have lost his scholarship over this interview. Will be very disappointing if he did indeed sign for slot. Hollon: I was actually heading back from the state game and I got a call from my agent, Rob Martin and he told me the Toronto Blue Jays wanted to take me in the second round. I tried to call my dad and he didn't answer because one of the local scouts with the Texas Rangers came to the house because he wanted to watch them [Rangers] take me on the screen; but, as soon as my dad was shaking his hand coming into the house the Blue Jays announced that they took me and I got that call so they [my family] said they got to celebrate it with the Rangers, instead of me

Is it simply because he made reference to an agent rather than an adviser?
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted June 10, 2013 Author Posted June 10, 2013 In what respect? Hollon would sign 0.4M below the price of the slot and that money would go into the Bickford pockets. Hollon ~7K Bickford 2.9M + 0.4M = 3.3M

Hollon ~7K Bickford 2.9M + 0.4M = 3.3M Okay, thanks - I think - that's what I kind of figured because I didn't understand. If Hollon signed for slot - which he apparently did, I didn't see how he it would help out with Bickford. I see what you're saying now though, in that IF Hollon had agreed to underslot, it could have gone towards Bickford. Thanks.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted June 10, 2013 Posted June 10, 2013 Can you elaborate? Is it simply because he made reference to an agent rather than an adviser? yep. Just saying the word Agent is enough to lose your scholarship. Especially this statement " but we had been talking to him a little bit and he said he had been trying to work out a deal with the Blue Jays.". I'm not even 100% sure he's supposed to publicly say that he had a pre-draft offer...but while against MLB rules, MLB would look stupid pursuing any team for that as absolutely everyone does it.
kgm1 Verified Member Posted June 10, 2013 Posted June 10, 2013 not signing Bickford would piss me off . Think what our farm system would look like if we still had Paxton , Beede and Bryant in the system even after the trades . I know this draft is supposed to be mediocre but still a top pick is a top pick. Shipley was available and this was a college pitching heavy draft .

It would still be a top pick next year.... and you could sign a guy a year older in a deeper draft and be further ahead in all respects.

We will have two picks in the top 10-15 range next draft in a deeper draft. Paxton turned into Noah, Beede into Stroman, Bryant was never going to sign unless we threw 3-4 million dollars at him.
The Cats Ass Old-Timey Member Posted June 10, 2013 Posted June 10, 2013 not signing Bickford would piss me off . Think what our farm system would look like if we still had Paxton , Beede and Bryant in the system even after the trades . I know this draft is supposed to be mediocre but still a top pick is a top pick. Shipley was available and this was a college pitching heavy draft . Exactly, a top pick is a top pick.... If we don't sign our top pick this year we get ANOTHER top pick next year. One who has a chance to be even better then Bickford! People always bring up Paxton and Beede. You know who we got for comp for Paxton? Noah Syndergaard... And who is the higher rated prospect right now between the two of them? With Beede we got another pick in the same spot the next year and got Marcus Stroman. Both are good arms, and Beede still had questions about him at that time. Who knows which one will end up better in the end. The only case that could be had for any of them would be Bryant. He was drafted in the 18th round, he was heading to college, and I guess he wanted more money then what the Jays felt comfortable giving, happens all the time with other teams too. So, I don't care if we sign Bickford or not, in the end we will end up getting a very high pick next year in a better draft. It would also give us 2 first round picks which I think would be an even better bonus because of the way the spending limits are set up.
Caper Verified Member Posted June 10, 2013 Posted June 10, 2013 Someone tell me if this would be allowed..... it's pretty dirty...... Houston Astros selected Mark Appel #1..... this is what MLB trade rumors had to say about his bargaining position. Having already played his prime negotiating card last year, and now entering the draft as a college senior, one might suspect that Appel will have a relatively weak bargaining position in working out his bonus with Houston. But that may not be the case, explains Cameron. Players drafted this year must agree to terms with their teams by July 12th at 5:00 PM EST. That rule, however, excepts college seniors that have no remaining NCAA eligibility. Such players can continue to negotiate until the very eve of next year's draft. With Appel's selection slot representing a huge chunk ($7.79MM) of the Astros total $11.7MM bonus pool, says Cameron, the team must be cognizant of the trajectory of its negotiations with Appel before inking deals with the remainder of its selections. The reason is that a team can only use the bonus pool money it is allocated for a given draft slot if it actually signs the player it chooses in that slot. And if a team spends more than 5% above its total bonus pool allocation, it will lose its first pick in the next draft -- a particularly heavy price for an Astros team that figures to pick at the top of the draft next year. So, signing other players at above-slot rates before agreeing to terms with Appel carries a lot of risk for Houston. With a later negotiating deadline than other top picks, Appel can, in Cameron's words, "basically hold the Astros bonus pool hostage." (It is also worth noting, as Cameron does, that Appel is being advised by the notoriously aggressive Boras Corporation.) So what if the Astro's said "f*** him"... we will offer him well below slot, sign all of our other guys and say "take it or leave it"........ Then next year.... since they are last in the league anyway..... they can just pick him again.... and still have the number 2 pick in the draft......then...... they low ball him again. They will still suck and they can pick him again next year if he doesn't sign......... Then when they finally sign him he'd be pretty much ready to go to the majors (assuming he's playing independent league).... they would have him locked up well into his prime years... and when they are more ready to compete.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted June 10, 2013 Posted June 10, 2013 He can refuse to allow them to draft him a second time. Just as he could have done with the Pirates or the Tigers. I don't see them not having a good idea what he wants this time around and he'll sign at a price where it allows them to sign everyone. Boras has a great relationship with Luhnow and my guess is they agree to an underslot value with a callup this year.
