You're right, there are a lot of teams that went heavily on SP. I took a look and 11 teams other than the Jays took at least 7 pitchers out of their 10 picks. There were none other with 9 (I don't think) but pretty sure that there 3-4 more that drafted 8 pitchers.

 

Cool find, nice. There still isn't any excuse for not taking a single damn bat before the 10th, but this makes me feel a liiiiittle less annoyed.

I'm not saying I like the thought - I'm concerned with some big bats that could have been passed over but meh, they Jays weren't the only team, whether that makes it easier or not.

Now looking at our picks and where some of them were ranked (or not ranked) I expect at least a few underslot deals (except Bickford) to give us bonus space to use on later picks.

I would be completely understanding of punting 2-4 midrounders to sign an advanced bat like Martarano or a really nice pitcher like Brentz or Whitson or Quantrill (I think he's still there), and I think we'd be able to get enough room with a couple of our midrounders being $1000 bonus guys.

The rankings after 100 aren't precise at all, I wouldn't worry that these guys aren't ranked highly.

 

Remember, Syndergaard wasn't even ranked by BA coming into the draft and they took him in the Comp Round. Worked out great.

 

Synder's stuff was waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay better than anyone we took (minus maybe Bickford) and I don't remember him having as many injury risks (I could be wrong though).

yeah, you have to wonder if they know some of these guys just wont sign. if they have 3-4 of the top ten rounds not sign, they get a very nice set of picks next year.

I think Collins might be signable for a reasonable price, but Boldt is probably going to school unless he gets first round money.

 

My favourite bat is Longhi or Tellez, but Woodman is my favourite bat left that can play a useful position.

Only other team to take all pitchers so far...the Detroit Tigers (albeit 6 college ones after Crawford in the 1st). Funny how much I've compared the two front offices of late.

 

I still think Beeston's heavily involved in the change in direction the Jays have taken.

I know people are disappointed that AA took players who were slotted later but something to keep in mind is that a highschool kid ranked 200 is way more likely to be better in the long run then a college sr ranked 150. So using the argument of this being a busted draft by AA based on rankings is not reasonable. A 17/18 yr old highschool kid who can throw 94 mph is almost certain to gain at least one Mph on their fastball and develop better off-speed pitches, vs a 21 or 22 yr old College Sr who is maxed out. Pitchers take longer to reach their potential so it's almost certain that an 18 year old pitcher is going to get better. Hitting can be harder to project IMO. I would rather take an established hitter in college then some project coming out of highschool.

 

There is a chance Bickford turns into a guy who throws consistent high 90's with a devestating hook. He could end up being as good as the top few pitchers in the draft.

I hate everything. Everyone I want. Gone. Martarano, Martinez (I think), Whitson and maybe another 1 or two are the only ones who remain. Pitcher after pitcher after pitcher. All injured. The only ones that seems good are Boyd and Greene. The Rays and Athletics can go f*** themselves. This is a complete disaster.

I disagree. There are some very nice hitting prospects: Healy, Denney, O'Neill, Milone, etc. If we went MAINLY pitching I wouldn't be half as mad. But ALL pitching in the EARLY rounds? I strongly disagree with it. Even if we had gone mainly pitching in the early rounds but taken a chance on one of the good bats, that would be pretty satisfying imo.

I'm getting the growing impression the Jays are just going to lowball Bickford. With the new compensation system, the only way to stockpile picks in a good draft is to punt a bad one. It wouldn't be out of character for AA to try something like this. Bickford is intriguing enough to be a worthy project if he does sign for slot but the greater upside is in him not signing.

But in this case you have a poster squawking about missing out on prospects and can't figure out the Minor League structure.....seems odd to me.
