Padres::

• Jedd Groyko needs only one more homer to break the team's record for most homers in a month by a rookie. The Padres' top batting prospect coming into the season, has 6 homers this month and is looking for the record breaking 7th tonight before the month comes to an end
  
• In an interesting statistic, Padres outfielder Wil Venable is hitting .396 with the bases loaded in his career with the Padres. That puts him to 3rd overall in the team's history behind Phil Nevin (.506) and Tony Gwynn (.444)
  
• San Diego are tied with the Orioles for most steals in the majors with 41 stolen bags
  

 

Jays:

• Jose Bautista's having a phenomenal May, in his 27 games played he's hit .360 with 5 homers and 16 RBIs. He has the most Walktistas this month in the American League with 22, and his .472 OBP leads the AL too.
  
• Edwin Encarnacion has a .500 career average (9/18!) against Marquis with 3 extra base hits. Two of them were homers and a double.
  
• Melky leads the team with 16 multi-hit games, filling in well at the leadoff spot for the injured Reyes.
  
• The Jays have won 4 of 6 all time against the Padres

Jays need to sweep if they plan any type of playoff run. With some key players expected to return soon they need to get into a position to make a run otherwise it's all over.

Chad Jenkins against Jason Marquis--it's like he's facing an older version of himself.

 

Padres are more interesting than most give them credit for (everyone seems to dismiss them because their uniforms are gray). Headley and Venable are very underrated players who do lots of things well, and Grandal and Gyorko are a couple of interesting young players.

 

Side note: I exepct Pat Tabler to remark at some point in this series that Headley "plays the game the right way".
