It was never a great deal from an asset management perspective, but I don't think anybody could have predicted he would perform this badly.

Part of me is going to go mental if his performance is being affected by an injury that he is unwisely trying to pitch through. Another part of me would be relieved if there was something tangible we could attribute to his suckage.

Syndergaard: 2.73 ERA 54K/15BB 1.2WHIP

Who cares about Syndergaard....we have Nolin.

Oh wait.

I usually start a rant thread with the hopes that it will degrade into a reasonable conversation. This post is a good start.

I'm hoping he has a pretty bad injury. It's the best case scenario.

His performance is what it is: terrible.

What you can attribute that poor performance to impacts how I view Dickey and the future. So yes...I would hope that his suckage is based on the most curable problem: an injury.

As opposed to, say, age....or "losing it."

I'm not hoping for him to get injured...I'm hoping that's why he is sucking.

Hoping for an injury is dumb. Would you rather we throw Romero out there to walk over a batter an inning?

I don't think anybody is hoping that he gets injured, just hoping that he's currently more injured than he's letting on, and that his poor performance is tied to a nagging injury rather than him jumping off the aging cliff.

Occam's Razor suggests that it's simply age, although it's probably a combination of factors, like most things.

But I think a big part of it is him simply losing it.

I don't think anyone could've foreseen him pitching this badly, even those of us who were against the trade. It's also hard to see him struggle as he's such a likeable human being. He just hasn't thrown the hard knuckler all season.

Yes that makes sense

Yup. Dude is 38. His back/neck aren't what they used to be, and velo is down on all his pitches.

What do studies say about the steepness of decline from 37 to 38? I'd imagine if there was a decline it would have mostly happened by that point.

It's mots likely he's injured, and it's affecting his abillity to throw his KB for strikes, which has been his main problem this year. It's his FB that's getting rocked

I made a post on the old board after the trade showing that almost every knuckleballer declined at this age, except for Niekro. It's a small sample size so it's hard to actually do a comparison, but looks like it holds true.

On top of that, they say a knuckleball is less stress on the arm. What about the knuckleballer that is throwing it at near max velocity?

Well if he has a bad back/neck and is struggling with declining velo, its fair to say that his age is playing a roll regardless of what typical decline is at that age.

When AA acquired him he probably thought "yay! I don't have to worry about him messing up his elbow joint! Ninja strikes again."

I guess AA can't even realize that at only 34 he's looking like the Michelin Man that he can't fathom that R.A. Dickey at 38 might have some natural degeneration associated with aging.

In A+ ball. He won't be big league ready until 2014-2015.

And if he were still with the Jays you would be acclaiming him as a consenus top 10 prospect you hypocritical f***.

Why the f*** hasn't anybody banned this loser yet?

You want to ban someone because they are not excited about high A ball stats? Really?

I hated the deal when I thought Dickey would be close to his 2012 stats...nothing more needs to be said from me.

As for his age, being someone that's active and just a little above that age...I just had a bath in ice cubes after playing an ultimate game without subs. Age is a factor no matter what pitch he throws.

Oh so you must not read all of his other stupid posts. Gotcha.

To be fair, a lot of us would have been pissed off if we gave the farm for Gio, no one expected his numbers to get better once leaving Oakland.

Latos should have been the trade. 24 year old (near) ace locked up for the next four years.

Posted
I am deeply depressed. We won't see a winning team until AA is fired, which could take a couple of years. And we also need to get Paul Beeston the f*** away from this team.

Yep, I was soooo big on the Latos train. Brought up Gio because we have a specific detail (Syndergaard) about our possible package.

If the people who were against the Latos trade knew that AA's plan was to trade all the prospects eventually, they would've supported it too. It made so much sense and we had the pieces.

AA was probably napping and missed the call from san diego's GM

AA is tireless and never sleeps...he was obviously eating.

I actually still have some confidence in Dickey too. However, as much as everyone wanted to say age isn't a concern because he's a knuckleballer it's complete horseshit. It didn't mean that he'd be a bad pitcher but injury/stiffness concerns are equal with him as they are any 38 year old.

I suppose. I still have a long way to go, so I really have no experience with that!

Gio is actually back to his old ways so far this year. He'd have an ERA well over 4 here.

Yeah... but... I'd take that right about now lol.

I don't. His velocity is down, may just be a bit, but I think it is making a difference. And I think it will only decline even more. Soon he'll be just another Tim Wakefield.

I wonder if that 1-2mph difference is the reason why his control has been so bad this year.
