Discussion welcome. Also, any honourable mentions / anyone I missed (poll only allows for 10 though)?

Call me crazy I voted Rasmus.

Dammit... I only came in here to sarcastically vote Evan Gattis. Since he's on the poll, I'll just leave in shame now.

The guy half swings at balls and it leaves the ball park... I'm pretty sure that's raw power

Lol @ this poll with no Stanton or Harper.

Maybe the only 2 true 80 power tools in the league.

I came here to vote for Stanton or Harper, but I guess I'll just troll this vote with Evan Gattis.

No Stanton/Miggy/Bautista?

Obvious answer is #top10catcher

I wouldn't put Miggy or Bautista on raw power list...

If you don't think those two have plus plus raw power, I don't know what to tell you.

Matt Stairs.

I'm pretty sure he's hit balls into the 5th deck off of a tee.

It was funny, but it wasn't really a joke. That man could hit balls a LONG way.

He just couldn't do much else. I remember in 2009, I was at a game and I was in LF, it was the game Aaron Hill broke some club HR record for 2Bs, and Stairs hit a line drive right at the LF. The LF dropped it and Stairs ran towards second and he was thrown out by a solid 4 seconds.

This is a pretty tough poll, really hard to tell. I'm going with Yoenis Cespedes, dude has some major power when he connects. Going to see some massive bombs from him for many years to come.

Miguel Cabrera's raw is pretty underrated.

The fat dude regularly hits low line drives for right CF dingers. With identical contact, most other power guys can barely split the gap for two bases.

If he had an all or nothing approach, he would probably hit them as far as anybody.

Not sure if serious or trolling? Bautista has a lot of bat speed, most of his homeruns barely make it out... Miggy maybe, but he reminds me of a baby, I don't attribute raw power to a baby.

2010/2011 No doubt HRs: Bautista - 38

Next closest: A bunch of guys at 21-22

Don't lie to me.

I'm not looking up the numbers right now but if I recall, he did have a lot of barely made its. But when you lead the league in HRs, there's a good chance it will happen.

We need to define "raw".

- Guy with ugly swing that tries to kill it?

- Guy who crushes it?

- Guy who can crush it, but hasn't put it together?

- etc

Chris Davis immediately came to mind for me.

Guy who could just crush it last few years, but couldn't hit the breaking ball (think that was it).

The power's there, he just didn't figure things out.

Then I look at a guy like Prince Fielder. Just a big beast. That can be another definition of 'raw' power.

Raw power is basically just how far the baseball goes when you square it up perfectly. Some people generate it with bat speed and backspin. Others generate it Wily Mo style, with biceps and little else.

As opposed to game power, which you could define by in season ISO or HR rate/count.

To me "Raw" is, generally speaking, the ability to hit the ball a long way regularly. While not a perfect proxy, No Doubters isn't bad either.

I don't think a scout would slap more than a 60 on Bautista.

I can assure you this isn't true.

But would you have said this back in 2009? His tool hasn't changed, his approach has.

It absolutely has changed. His swing change increased his batspeed and changed his swing path, 2 things that can definitely lead to more max distance.

Fly ball distance is basically determined by (in terms of what the hitter controls): Speed of bat, weight of bat, backspin, launch angle and to a smaller extent wrist strength (the less give on the bat on contact with the ball the better). A swing change directly effects 3 of these (speed of bat, backspin and launch angle).
