SAAviour Verified Member Posted May 14, 2013 Posted May 14, 2013 Dustin has been added to Dunedin blue jays for rehab assignment....does anyone know if there is a limit on rehab assignments...for some reason I recall reading once that once on rehab assignment there are only so many days until he needs to be optioned or added to mlb roster? Thanks.
saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted May 15, 2013 Posted May 15, 2013 Saviour there was an article a week ago on Dustin and he was doing the delabar program more for recovery. It was really helping with his recovery and he was feeling really well the day after pitching but he did indicate he noticed more zip on his pitches as well..

magits Verified Member Posted May 15, 2013 Posted May 15, 2013 Dustin McGowan (shoulder) will begin a rehab assignment with Double-A New Hampshire on Tuesday. Blue Jays general manager Alex Anthopoulos said McGowan, who has been throwing in extended spring training, is feeling "great." He should be an option to join the team's rotation later this month. May 14 - 6:38 PM Source: John Lott on Twitter are they stretching him out?
saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted May 15, 2013 Posted May 15, 2013 are they stretching him out? given the status of our rotation I wish they would stretch him out, but I doubt they will. He really shouldn't pitch that long in dunedin...Dustin throwing 96 just isn't fair at single A ball. Give him a couple games and bring him up to AAA.

If he was going to be a starter, you would think he would've pitched more than 1 inning. On the other hand, given the news on Santos, he'd be a welcome addition to the bullpen. Maybe Stilson can move quickly now that he's been moved to the BP and also made his season debut tonight.
Hemingways007 Verified Member Posted May 15, 2013 Posted May 15, 2013 If called up, would we use him as a SP or RP? What do you guys think? With the state of our rotation I'd like to see him start, but that might make him more susceptible to injuries.
connorp Old-Timey Member Posted May 15, 2013 Posted May 15, 2013 Honestly I've always rooted for McGowan but really the Vegas O/U on when he would get shut down again would be like 1 week most likely
o2cui2i Community Moderator Posted May 15, 2013 Posted May 15, 2013 Honestly I've always rooted for McGowan but really the Vegas O/U on when he would get shut down again would be like 1 week most likely they are paying him for the whole year, might as well get that week of work out of him. lol
wilko Old-Timey Member Posted May 15, 2013 Posted May 15, 2013 Put Dusty in the Pen, his glass shoulder can't take more than 60 IP.
fireballW Verified Member Posted May 15, 2013 Posted May 15, 2013 Every one of our pitchers should be on the Delabar program before all the other teams start getting in on it too. There are enough gimmicks out there, but with Delabar and Cecil adding a seemingly unheard of amount of velocity throughout the program, and staying healthy *knock on wood* so far, there is a lot to think this might be legit. Earlier reports on McGowan were mixed, with Toronto org guys saying he still had awesome stuff but other reports saying he was throwing around 90-91 MPH. To hear he was throwing that hard is pretty awesome!
Slade Old-Timey Member Posted May 15, 2013 Posted May 15, 2013 I don't know if his shoulder could handle 200IP, but they've always said they like him getting regular rest in between.
fireballW Verified Member Posted May 15, 2013 Posted May 15, 2013 Look at Strasburg this year, velocity isn't everything Pitchers throwing 95 these days are only throwing 90%, pitching smart always beats pitching hard. Tommy John surgery aint no fun Delabar program lol, how about the Rex Brothers program? Guy is a consummate professional, throws harder than anyone in Colorado which deserves even more respect I don't understand your post. Look at Strasburg this year? His fastball velocity is pretty close to the same as the last couple years and he has been pitching well. Are you arguing that we shouldn't start pushing a program that has turned around 2 of our player's careers completely and looks to be helping a 3rd? Are you trying to argue that velocity doesn't help? You said Tommy John surgery ain't no phone in your post and the program I am talking about was designed as an injury prevention program, with the side effect that it has seemed to add a significant amount of velocity to player's fastball.

eastcoastjaysfan Old-Timey Member Posted May 15, 2013 Posted May 15, 2013 And WHEN did Cecil start doing the program? He had a huge spike in velocity near the end of last season, not YOY
CHRIS Verified Member Posted May 15, 2013 Posted May 15, 2013 Every one of our pitchers should be on the Delabar program before all the other teams start getting in on it too. The first thing we should do is tell everyone that Ricky was on the program, so that it scares people off of wanting to use it, and then put all of our guys on it. Except Jannsen.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted May 15, 2013 Posted May 15, 2013 And WHEN did Cecil start doing the program? He had a huge spike in velocity near the end of last season, not YOY Wasn't that just due to the switch from starter to reliever?
saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted May 15, 2013 Posted May 15, 2013 Wasn't that just due to the switch from starter to reliever? Shi Davidi tweeted the following: Dustin McGowan eligible to come off 60-day DL May 30. "I expect him to be ready,” says AA See you in two weeks and a day Dusty!
HERPDERP Old-Timey Member Posted May 15, 2013 Posted May 15, 2013 I thought AA said a few months back that they are abandoning the idea of McGowan in the rotation? What gives? Unless they are stretching him out for a long-relief role..

The_DH Verified Member Posted May 15, 2013 Posted May 15, 2013 A three man rotation and ten bullpen arms. We need starters.
ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted May 15, 2013 Posted May 15, 2013 It seems to me McGowan will be a bullpen option. Don't you guys think that McGowan would've started the game if the Jays planned on having him start in MLB after participating in ST and staying in ExST for all of April and half of May? Why would he only pitch 1 inning? He's eligible to come off the DL on May 30th, so are 2 weeks enough for him to build up from 1 inning to 6 innings? Doubt it. Look at JJ, he hasn't pitched since April 21st or something and he won't be back till June. McGowan is coming out of the BP.

He's been pitching non stop since training camp...they just never put him in official minor league games until now because it started the clock. I agree he will be in the bullpen, but if they wanted to, I think they could stretch him out to be a starter in a matter of a couple weeks...he could easily go 50 to 60 pitches in his next outing if they needed.
saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted May 15, 2013 Posted May 15, 2013 Someone, in detail, please describe the Delabar program. Thanks The delabar throwing program is a bit of a misnomer....it's the delabar holding on to the ball program. It occured to the developers of the program that tennis players never have bad shoulders. They have bad elbows, but not bad shoulders and the serve is a lot like the motion of pitching. The difference is they don't release the raquet. The delabar throwing program uses 6 ounce to 2 pound balls where you increase the strength on the front of the shoulder when you release the ball, and when you make the motion and hold on you are increasing the strength of the back of the shoulder causing more well balanced strenth in the shoulder, one less prone to injury and one that enables you to throw the a baseball harder. This is an oversimplification, but the coles notes version based on what I saw on a piece describing the program.

I would think it's easier to 'shrink' him in from a starter to a reliever than to stretch him out from a reliever to a starter. Again, if they planned on having him start at all, why wouldn't he have started in the minors. All signs point to him being in the bullpen. I even seem to remember Gibbons (?) saying he'd pitch out of the BP. Stilson also debuted yesterday out of the bullpen which is where they plan on keeping him. Stroman is a guy they're going to try as a starter and if he struggles, they know he can always go back to being a reliever, much easier to do.
