ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted May 25, 2013 Posted May 25, 2013 I won't say who they should take. It's pretty simple for me, take the BPA. I don't care who it is, this pick HAS to turn out to be a good one as this is a very important draft. It would be great if whomever it is moves quickly through the system, but as long as they get a heck of a player, I'm fine with it. If it's a bust, I'll rip this FO.
L54 Old-Timey Member Posted May 25, 2013 Posted May 25, 2013 If we take a bat, I hope we end up taking someone who profiles as a guy who can make contact, instead of these 4 tool players who do everything but hit. What do guys like Meadows and Peterson appear like as contact makers?

I know Peterson can definitely hit and make contact, that's all he's done in college, however, that's all he can do, and if he can't hit very well at the majors, he's utterly useless. From the video I've seem from Meadows (the All-America ones on Youtube), he's got a bit of a long swing and apparently he does swing and miss a lot, Frazier has better bat speed.

Laika Community Moderator Posted May 25, 2013 Posted May 25, 2013 Seems kind of nuts that Frazier might actually be in the picture at #10. He'll probably get popped at #9 by Pitt, just like Giolito got popped at #16 by the Nats last year.

Laika Community Moderator Posted May 25, 2013 Posted May 25, 2013 You know they would've passed on Giolito anyway. I had a weird ass dream last night. My girlfriend was the Blue Jays GM, and we made the 10th overall pick at an A&W drive through. She wanted to pick someone I'd never heard of, and I was all mad about it, so we drove off and later found out that the scouting director picked Trey Ball. Then she turned into a chicken and the GM office flooded with two inches of water and the door wouldn't open. So the chicken GM girlfriend had to walk on it's tippy toes and it's chicken feet got all water logged and wrinkly. And Tinnish kept swimming down to slide paper under the door, because he wanted to keep the GM in the loop. And this happened in a school for some reason and there was a bike club which I was more concerned with than anything.

I'd love if the Jays could grab Frazier at #10, his elite bat speed is exactly what this system needs. It probably takes the BoSox selecting a pitcher and the Pirates taking McGuire.

And it seems like him and Meadows are falling down draft boards together. I thought these guys were virtual locks for top ~6 selections.

I just hope AA goes BPA and not the safe route with another Blue Jays classic Romero/McGuire/Jenkins selection.

Meadows does look like he has a long swing and his hands seem to move a fair bit but he looks like he has the ability to develop a smooth line drive swing. That and what looks to be plus speed (tripled down the LF line in one of the videos I saw).
ace3113 Verified Member Posted May 25, 2013 Posted May 25, 2013 I think i would rather go for Ball, seems to have better secondaries and command, the fastball isn't as good but i could see Ball adding some velo pretty easily I would take Manaea cause he could help right away and I think have a Chris Sale like impact. My only concern is his Scott Boras connection. Seeing as we're "going for it" I think we should make the exception in his case. I mean Manaea is "struggling" this year and he still has a 1.47era and 93 strikeouts in 73innings. I think once he's healthy you're going to see that velocity back in the 94-96 range instead of 92-94. He's a potential top of the rotation starter. Ball has as much upside as anyone, but in comparison you're going to have to wait 5-6 years.

I thought these guys were virtual locks for top ~6 selections. People way overreact to small sample sizes in the draft. It only takes a few games for a guy to rocket back up the board which is kind of stupid when you're investing in a guy for almost 10 years.

Meadows, Smith, Frazier, maybe McGuire, maybe Shipley, Peterson, etc. It's risky banking on some of those guys, but I'm quite sure Smith will be there.
StevieRay Verified Member Posted May 27, 2013 Posted May 27, 2013 yes completely going with hype this time, but if jays pick ball over meadows (if available), gonna rage quit on this hopeless team.

If they take f***ing Ball over Austin Meadows, I will rage. Of course, that's what they will do. Waste a high pick on a guy with a LOT of uncertainty and projection but who is also very athletic. As a pitcher, no less. UGH.

Smith is nice, but Austin Meadows at 11 is a steal imo. They can't pass on him for a guy like Trey Ball.

He's exactly what we don't need in two different ways; a projectable pitcher who needs a lot to break right and needs better secondaries, or a toolsy CF with no hit tool. So you just know we're gonna take him.

I didn't have that in any order. 1.) Frazier 2.) Meadows 3.) Smith Smith is a great pick but Meadows or Frazier at 11 would be incredible.
