This year's draft should be interesting. Those competitive balance picks (which can be traded once) could make things very interesting if a player drops out of the first round.

Is there a deadline on trading them? I've never actually read if they can be traded on draft day.

I don't know. I assumed they could be, since that would presumably give the teams needing the extra talent the best return.

Yeah looks like it is. However I don't know if we'll see one traded for a team to take a falling player as these aren't protected picks. What I can see is a team who just took a big time overslot player trading for one or more of these picks to use the slot value of these picks ($1.5M for the first of these) and then use it on a pre-draft deal for a way underslot player.

Question. Is this pick protected if the draftee doesn't sign? If so and it's a weak draft, would it be better to parlay the pick over to next year?

Yes it's a protected pick and yes I believe 2014 is a stronger draft. I've wondered if more teams would use this as a strategy. It would really be leaving this draft bare though as we would have just $3.5M to sign our other 9 picks. The Pirates have 8.8M to spend because they didn't sign Appel last year.

The thought of 2 top ten picks for the new GM is appealing...

For the record, I'm pretty sure it would be the ninth overall pick. Pittsburgh's 9 pick is the carry over from last year so our pick would have been 9th had it not been for that.

Who's projected to be there around 9 next year? I'd put the chances that we take Gareth Morgan, a toolsy Canadian OF, at about 105%.

I believe you lose one position on the pick, so we would stay at 10 (assuming no one else below us also fails to sign the players).

The NCAA baseball tourney is truly one of the best formats around (double knockout mini groups of four teams with the number 1 seed being at home). Right now there aren't the upsets of last year but it's still an amazing tourney that should get way more coverage. I used to be able to find the best ESPNU feeds but they really suck these days.

What the heck is that stance!

its known in 4th world countries as the High Pricked Manderine Cricket Slap! it renders him as a "banjo" hitter with no power but your average is always 1000. i was taught this on the Mang chee River in Nam by Stompin Tom Conners

Really? f***.

Do you have an actual source for that? We don't really know anything about the Jays are going to do.

I have no clue, just been reading that we were heavily scouting Mcguire and Ball.

Posted
Sure, but they could also go a bit off the board. They're scouting everyone heavily and I bet McGuire's taken by then.

We never heard anything about them loving DJ Davis or Marcus Stroman last year. The MLB draft is always highly random.

Stroman they didn't expect to still be around at the 22 pick

That's true. Hopefully that shows that they're willing to take somebody who falls.

Crawford won't need to slip to be selected 10th but Mcguire and Ball might.

I think meadows ball and frazier are in 1 tier of hs prospects and there's the others (crawford, smith, mcguire etc). here s really hoping one of ball or meadows fall to us.

Please, please don't be Mcguire.

We need two teams in the top 9 to reach for someone.

If we want Frazier the teams at the top of the draft are going to have to go pitching heavy or get scared off by his bonus demands. After the top talents Frazier, Gray, Appel and Stewart are taken I don't feel there is a big talent gap in the next 10 picks or so. McGuire isn't my favourite either but if the Jays feel he is the BPA I'll be happy with the selection.

We heard the Jays were in on Davis a week or two before the draft. It was actually quite similar to the way the McGuire and Crawford Jays ties began popping up recently.

Scouting Baseball Mock 3.0

10. Blue Jays

The Pick - J.P. Crawford

2nd Option - Trey Ball

3rd Option - Dominic Smith

4th Option - D.J. Peterson

I'm starting to get on the Crawford bandwagon. He has elite tools, is a freak athlete who plays a premium position well and the nephew of Carl Crawford (who comes from a baseball family). The Jays could certainly do worse.

+1, I've been on the Crawford bandwagon for a while now. I don't think he's the ideal pick at that spot but if everyone else is gone and we need to reach, he's who we should be reaching for imo.

I really like the new draft rules. They add another layer of strategy and preparation to the draft. Crawford has as much upside as anyone that will be there at 10 and he may just work better in the overall draft strategy.

If you can't tell I'm excited for Thursday!

I've been waiting months for this, I'm so pumped haha.

And I'll stay pumped until we take a toolsy outfielder who doesn't know how to baseball for the 100000000000000000000000000th time.

I'll be more upset if they go the low upside college player Deck/Jenkins/Cooper route. The Jays need to go after an impact player at 10.
