Juan Meza was our big seven figure IFA signee last year. Jesus Severino, Hansel Rodriguez, Bryan Lizardo, Kelyn Jose, and Miguel Almonte were all six figure IFA signings as well worth watching. Justin Maese was was our 3rd round pick in this draft. I don't know much about Edward Olivares, but he's still 19 and had a big year in the DSL last year so he's probably worth keeping an eye on.

Jesus Severino signed for $400K two years ago. After struggling in the DSL last year, he was hitting .354/.483/.396 this year before they brought him up to the GCL just recently.

after checking both Bluefield and GCL rosters, where is JC Cardenas? I have to say I m most intrigued by him amongst all of our rd 5-10 selections.

Hoffman getting hit hard again today. Struggling to strike out batters still. 4 IP 7 H 1BB 2SO

According to the game log, at least 3 of the hits were soft IF grounders

2 SO in 5 innings is the much more concerning thing. Hes going to give up lots of hits if he can't strike anyone out.

I agree. However, I was just pointing out that he wasn't necessarily "hit hard".

Cardenas is starting at SS for Vancouver tonight.

First year in pro ball, coming back off of TJS... I'm willing to cut him some slack, he's got a great arm and I'm sure he'll develop it.

kiley mcdaniel was at the game last night to watch hoffman. i'm looking forward to his post about the start

he tweeted that he was sitting 94-96 with easy smooth delivery

But if he's at his velocity that he was pre surgery and still isn't striking anyone out thats almost just as bad because it means his stuff isn't fooling anyone. Is there any evidence of a pitcher who came back from TJS and randomly doubled their K% while throwing with their same stuff and just better command?

see Daniel Norris. Guy is not a finished product, we're just getting our hands on him and his delivery.

unlikely hoffman is back to where he was pre-injury..... velocity is one thing, command/control/movement is another

let's see how he does in late august... his ETA is still sometime in 2016

Norris always struck guys out though. Hoffman had a K rate of 13% before striking out 2 guys in 5 innings last night. The way I think of it is even if you aren't commanding your fastball, guys are still going to swing and miss at it. That hasn't happened yet for a guy who's been reportedly throwing 94-97.

We don't know what Hoffman is working on. We don't know how he is bouncing back from injuries. If he has back-to-back big SO games the perception of him will completely flip flop. That's a very telling sign that we need to see more before drawing any conclusions.

Do you know that he is working with his full assortment of pitches. He might be throwing majority fastballs as instructed to do resulting in fewer K's then expected

It's almost like these people believe fastballs can't miss bats.

its easier to miss fastballs if mixing in CU and other pitches, throwing mainly fastballs even A+ batters will lock in on timing

is there a site that gives pitch mix for MiLB?

That is not true.

Also, the assumption that he's just throwing fastballs is not based in reality. It's based on Hoffman being your favourite player and a refusal to believe that me may just not be good at missing bats right now.

Nah, he's not my favourite player at all. Just the latest of potential frontline starters to keep an eye on.

Not making the assumption, the possibility exists he has been instructed to work on FB command, and not to worry about results. Fact is, none of us know whats going on. MiLB stats can be misleading.

Command of secondaries is pretty important. Why would they be telling him to ignore working on them? He's not some raw HS pitcher.

Also, I know you like to say milb stats are misleading but the vast majority of the time, they are not.

I said its a possibility, and there are many other possibilities. None of us know what is going on, and what Hoffman is working on as he develops.

MiLB stats are misleading for a guy coming back from TJS. You can throw Hoffman's 2015 stats out the window.

Once I get some time (should be next few days), I'll write up Hoffman and Alex Reyes. Hoffman was 93-97 last night, curveball flashed the same as it was before TJ and he threw the changeup a lot more often. TOR has made his delivery less aggressive, more upright and more crossfire and he throws a slower curve most of the time, saving the best one for when he needs it. He's also pitching to contact to limit pitch count and using his third best pitch (CH) more, which explains the lower than expected K rate. I'll elaborate more, but this is more wait and see than good or bad. More important to see if TOR lets Hoffman loose next year

Bluefields roster has been released

http://www.milb.com/roster/index.jsp?sid=t517

Matt Morgan is on the roster. This seems aggressive for someone who was utter garbage (under statement) in the GCL last year and continued that this year in extended... but they must know something I don't, I guess.

Other notables include, yeltsin gudino, Brentz, wells, Barreto, Fred rod, and a whole bunch off recently drafted guys

Looks like Kiley kind of took a shot at Boxy here. The one thing I'll say is that changing a pitcher after surgery also generally means you can ignore what the pitcher did before the surgery too. Hoffman will have to be a watch and see guy.
